So now that the tankathon is officially underway - I thought we could use a thread to talk about who we want the Hawks to select in the 2021 draft. The guy at the top of the list currently is UMichigan D-man Owen Power. And, of course, we need a tankathon slogan so let's start out with "We're going to be blowin for Owen". (I stole that one from another blog)

I think "Blowin' for Owen" should suffice

I think "Blowin' for Owen" should suffice OK, but Power may not be at the top of the list by the time the draft rolls around. We may need to come up with a slogan for Simon Edvinsson or Dylan Guenther or even Chaz Lucius.

I’m gonna be honest here. It’s gonna be very tough to beat the Wings. I’m watching them vs the Canes and I’m not sure if they’ll get a real shot on net all year let alone a goal. The Winged Wheel had a few perimeter shots but no real scoring chance. They’re gonna be bad too. We need Kane to take a gawd damn sabbatical for a while.
I predicted the Hawks get 8 wins all year. Let’s say they disappoint and get 12. I think the Winged wheel will muster up a massive 6-7 wins. And they lost the lotto last year so they’ll probably win it!!!

I didn't bother to go look it up but I think the Wings got screwed in the draft for at least a couple years now because besides this last draft when the Rangers jumped up and got Lafreniere at #1, they got knocked down 3 positions when the Devils, Rangers and Hawks jumped up into the 1-2-3 spots in 2019.

With the world as it is this will be a very strange draft year. The scouts are going to earn their money and sometimes have to take a giant leap of faith in this one Could just be our luck to possibly get a #1 in a draft with little consensus on positioning.

I mean is Power the overwhelming No. 1 in 2021 draft?
If not blowin' for Owen could still work and he is there at 2

If not blowin' for Owen could still work and he is there at 2 I don't think Power is a sure bet unanimous #1 pick, at least not this far out from the draft but he's on the top of the list of some of the well known prospect analysts. Plus, there's no guarantee the Hawks get the #1 pick even is they do end up with the worst record. But they should get a top-5 pick and that should be a pretty good player to add to the mix.

It seems like this draft isn't going to be crystal clear it's the 2022 draft they're going to want to be no. 1 right? That Shane Wright kid...

i'm not sure i am onboard with this slogan, for obvious reasons. say it out loud a couple times....
Powers is good, but I dunno that there is a consensus #1 this year. a top 5 pick is cool this year. 2022 is the draft we want to be picking first in...

I’ve seen Wright once, he’s all business and very impressive. His numbers were over a point per game as a 15/16 year old, and he was named team captain at 15. The kid is a scholar, and has very high end skill. He’s a prototypical number 1. Maybe I’m looking too far ahead here. But in 2023 an absolute offensive dynamo is coming through. Connor Bedard (remember this name) is 15 and is the first kid granted exceptional status in the WHL. This kid is gonna be real good. If we still suck, cool, we can pick up all these awesome kids!!!

Getting a number one is nice and all, but the Hawks will need a "Generational" type player like they got with Kaner. Do you see one of those on the horizon?

Shane Wright is shaping up to be one of those generational players (2022 draft) and the kid from Finland - Brad Lambert - is close, if not equal to Wright in projection. The ideal scenario is to be top-3 in both 2021 and 2022 - AND to get something for Kane before he rides off into the sunset.

As long as Stan moves him out of the conference and not to one of our rivals (meaning no Red Wings/Blues/Canucks) so I can root for him to succeed elsewhere, I am fine with it now. Get some proven young NHL talent and first-round picks out of the deal. If needed those first-rounders could be coupled with Hawks' own to move up in 2022/2023 drafts to land one or both of these kids should the Blackhawks not have a top-2 pick for whatever reason.

After watching our D get smashed out against the competition. I feel it’s best to get a Huge Dman in here. I think Power should be our target even if we get the #1 and he’s ranked 5. We should trade down and get the kid we need.
So Zadorov is big and has thrown a couple decent hits. But he takes himself out of the play. And doesn’t seem to offer that much in an overall game. He’s basically “Zadorov SMASH”. But kinda useles with the puck.
We need a big mobile puck mover like Hedman. I think Power may be that guy. It’d be a step in the right direction!!!

And we end up picking 8th again!!!

I could be wrong here. I thought I read that due to Covid concerns with regards to the border. Power stayed in the US this past summer and practiced with the Chicago Steel? I also believe I read the Hawks were checking him out. They chatted with him etc. So they should have a good grip on what the kid can bring!!!

YES! Wings won tonight so we're two points up on them in the "Blowin for Owen" sweepstakes. We watched that game. The Winged Wheel played much better than the other night. They were outshot in game one 43-14. But they played decent enough for the win. I just think the Hawks are the thinnest team down the middle right now. With no valid options at center, I think the Hawks may end up in last place overall. Even Versteeg said this the other day. Plus a litany of other ex players and analysts. So we’ll see. But you and I have agreed that there’s 2 spots to be in hockey, the top or the bottom!!!
