ah shit. pat "whitey" stapleton died from a stroke. 79 years old. great blackhawk. and him and bill white were a steady pair for the hawks and for team canada as well in the '72 summit series. set a record (at the time) in '68/'69 for assists by a defenseman in a season with 50. and to this day is co-holder of an NHL record for assists by a d-man in one game with 6. great sense of humor as well. RIP. found this in another article i read about him which was a pretty amazing stat i reckon. "He served as captain during the 1969-70 season, then helped propel the Hawks to the Stanley Cup Finals (despite eventual losses to the Canadiens) in both 1971 and 1973, tallying a combined 34 points in 34 games over those two playoff runs."chicago.suntimes.com/blackhawks/2020/4/9/21215820/blackhawks-pat-stapleton-dies-captain-nhl-hockey-wha-chicago-cougarsedit: one other nugget. he was the first pro coach for both wayne gretzky and mark messier. (he was indianapolis racers' head coach in the 78/79 season)

Different time but it still shows a little defenceman can survive if he’s tough enough. Pierre Pilote was smaller than that and tough as hell...….different time indeed. At 6'2" 218lbs,Phil Esposito was considered a monster.

what shit news to wake up to. RIP to my all-time favorite blackhawk. I always thought Tony didn’t get enough credit for Canada’s victory over the Soviets in the ‘72 Summit Series. He beat the Swedes in the warmup game and then he only lost one of his four games in the series. His stat line of 3.33 GAA and .882 SVP was also a helluva lot better than Dryden’s 4.75 and .838 yet Dryden got all the press. As a matter of fact, the 2006 mini series barely even mentioned Tony, the Dryden character was prominently featured.

what a bummer. before my time, but a great guy from what I've been told.
the ex grew up in the burbs and a teacher she had in middle school was his (Tony's) niece. she came in that year for Halloween dressed in his full gear and then let the class try stuff on. he also came and spoke to the class at one point, I was told. the ex claimed he was the nicest guy...
RIP

Man, such sad news. From all I've read in he past, he was a great guy in person. I wish I had a chance to meet him. Always loved his Binny's commercials too.

Espo was my first goalie as a fan. It was Lloyd Petit calling his saves back in 1969. Very bad news...my prayers go out to him and his family.

Digging back into the cerebral wasteland that has become my long-term memory(LOL.....it's not quite that bad),finds me up in Edmonton in the late summer of '81' working for a Harness driver/trainer named Jack Beelby(GREAT guy). We shipped into the old Stampede park earlier in the summer and I had a chance to experience the 'Stampede' itself @24......(OH BOY WAS THAT FUN) and then shipped up the road a bit to Northlands latter on. Ol' Jack tells me he got his hands on three tickets for the US/Canada Cup game at the Coliseum and asked me if I'd take his two boys(mid and late teens)and of course I said yes. Don't remember how but I somehow got my hands on an ill-fitting Hawks jersey and I also somehow got my hands on beer after beer right from the game's start. Team Canada got out to a lead and the Yanks came back to tie it up 3-3 half way through the 3rd and I was in fine form. As the big barn quieted down I was up yelling "where's all the noise in this place now" and "hey Tony.....let's win one for the Dago's in Chicago". It's was quiet and I was REAL loud(much to the chagrin of my company...LOL)and I still swear Tony-O turned around during a stoppage in play to see who the loud mouth was. Team Canada scored on a PP and the flood gates opened for a 8-3 victory and that was that but it was quite the memory for my boss' boys from what they told me years later.

ex blackhawk lou angotti has died at age 83. played for 5 different teams but the vast majority of his games was in a hawks' uni. (370 games across 6 seasons) he was also the flyer's first ever captain. RIP. ^^ that's a hockey player's nose right there.

7th all time in regular season games played (1013) as a blackhawk scoring 207g, 288a. i just remember him as a real steady player and definitely part of the core group at the time.
never did see the movie but he played a part in the movie "youngblood" with rob lowe, patrick swayze and keanu reaves. (and to keep it blackhawk related, apparently a cameo by steve "stumpy" thomas as well)
anyways, 21 total NHL seasons, 1 movie and 88 years of age is a pretty good run. RIP
