Hawks on the PP, Bedards out numbered down low, how the hell does that happen? Pathetic. They gotta find him some size out there. Maybe try Dicky with him on the pp? He’s more than willing to do the dirty work!!!

Well got out worked and out muscled for the most part. Lots to learn for the kids rough to play back to backs get some rest before going out west. Gotta keep shift time down think that will be work in progress all year.

This is why they gotta start taking some size with the 1st rounders. It’s ok to have a few. But need size on every line!!!

I just don't remember an athlete of Ovi's caliber ever having this fast of a deterioration in his play,if healthy,it's hard to believe. I know about father time a little more than I want to myself and I also know nobody's immune, but the YoY drop-off is startling if healthy. I watch my share of Caps games and Ovi was still a force last year,he looks almost hapless now. One shift saw him with 3 TO's and a wiff in front before he crumbled from a fairly benign hit from Phillps(I believe)and before the 'old guy' slash. Vosters is full of shit,it wasn't a big hit.......the old guy just crumbled. I could understand a S% being off early in the year but the guy can barely handle a pass now and the once physical beast doesn't look the least bit beastly either. That was precisely my reaction to seeing him play. In fact, I thought about posting the question of whether he will retire after this year because he looks like he so out of it and just doesn't have any moxie anymore. The most action I saw from him was waving to the bench to get someone to relieve him out there. Maybe he was just feeling tired because of the back to back. Or, maybe it is just time for Ovi to just go bye-bye and leave Wayne's record all by its lonesome.

Bedard's second helper was a sweet pass and certainly made up for his boo-boo in letting Mantha get ahead of him on the latter's goal. Bedard will learn to hustle from that mistake.

Not Beauvillier, I've said it many times, that's a terrible line when Kurashev is the biggest guy. Yeah, I’d move Foligno back there or even a hungry Katchouk. What is there to lose at this time? Either one of them is good, but I think I'd rather see Dickenson there. He's kind of earned it too.
Edit: I just saw Big-T beat me to it.

And I beat you both to it on Dec 5th in the Bedard thread.

That’s a mistake I can live with. In Jrs he was in great position. In the NHL a guy like Mantha will beat you. Sad thing is, when you learn it all, your body is too old to do it all. Life is unfair!!!

I don’t have all the answers, you said a while back OV is looking old. Haven’t seen the most Caps games this year. I believe this is my 2nd. I think the caps lineup isn’t as strong as it’s been. Missing Backstrom is huge. Father Time is still undefeated and I have had my share of arguments about OV not getting the last 68 goals to beat it. I see at best him scoring 45 more in his career. Even that’s not guaranteed. I could really see him playing one more year and calling it a career. If he has back to back sub 20 goal seasons, he won’t chase it. No way at 40 or older he gets it done!!! IMO,the record looked to be a 'gimmie' coming into this year and I'd say in the opinion of most. Ovi had a 42 goal season w/o Backstrom for most of last year,he had a healthy hit total of 188, he and skated his usual 20 plus a game, with an above average shooting % of 14.3%. His consistency until this year has been legendary and his physical conditioning has always been outstanding too. Like I said,I saw a lotta Caps games last year and he was still a fearsome player! The YoY drop-off isn't just the 5.6% shooting percentage,it's a drop-off in almost every aspect of his game. Recieving/handling passes in-stride has always been a strong suit but he can barely handle a pass standing still now. His always powerful skating looks weaker too,not just slower. He crumbled from an average hit from Phillips and Anderson didn't trip him on that play in the 3rd either.......he toe-picked. I'm not looking to rip the guy either,I have great respect for his accomplishments,I respect the way he's navigated the Russian/political issues and the way he's always kept himself in top condition. Baring a nagging injury,I guess it has to be age but we've seen no downward trends until this year,I just expected a much slower decline when it came. Can Ovi no longer play the game @235lbs? He'd be half a step faster for sure @215lbs but he seems to have lost as much skating strength as he has speed so maybe not.

I guess for nostalgic reasons I’d like to see the record stand with Gretzky. If OV deserves it, he’ll get. Even when he pushed Soupy from behind and he broke his collarbone. OV admitted he did something shitty and was quite concerned for his wellbeing. That doesn’t happen very often. Even OVs body language isn’t what it used to be. He’s got a million miles on him now. It catches up. Add that without his #1 playmaker, things get tough. I don’t see too many 38 year olds crushing goals. Not saying it’s impossible. But usually 37/38 is where the body gets off the youth train and guys start to struggle. Most guys who stick around tend to end up in different roles. I doubt OV accepts a checking role. Add all of that in with his weight. It’s tough to keep up that weight and be in 25 year old shape. But, good luck to him!!!

Like I said in my other post jack, the guy was still a 40+ goal,'rock-em sock-em' beast last year w/o Backstrom,Wilson and Carlson for most of it. I know Backstrom's done and Kuznetzov's a complaining, bitch of a floater but Wison's back and having a good season,Carlson's back too and Ovi's chasing the record this year.........I'm shocked at his play so far. To be clear, this is not an accusation, but if I didn't know better,I'd say Ovi's game has the look of athlete who quit juicin'. I DO know better though and I have no reason to question his integrity,it's just rare to see a great player's speed, strength and hand-eye coordination all fall apart so fast.

But need size on every line!!! Take a couple of the extra LHD's we have and make them wingers. Wyatt Kaiser should think about that. Great skater, offensive instincts and a knowledge of defense, feisty and has decent enough size for a winger. With large being in fashion for defencemen and the number of LHD in the system it might be the only way to make the NHL. Although it’s probably a rare thing to do this late in the game.

Yes, the difference in his play is so noticeable to anyone who has seen him before. Wasn't it just last year when he got his 800th in his only appearance in the UC? I think it was part of a hat trick. In any event, he looked strong and ready to rock 'n roll that night. Now, a year later, he looked like he is done. Maybe he will experience a resurgence, just like Reichel will.

On the other hand, there is someone named LeBron James who is still rockin' it at 38 and I mean truly rockin' it. I know they are different games, but LBJ (not Lyndon Baines Johnson) is perhaps still the greatest force in the league, not just having a good year.

Maybe he's just hungover? I predict he will break Gretzky record in a wheelchair. I all honestly, he will break it regardless how many years it takes IMO.
