On one hand. I’ve been thinking that most of us are right. Bob, I love your posts. Even if I disagree with them. I think you’re right 98% of the time. I think you’re right with this post. I think what you, MVR and I have been saying is that the tank doesn’t have to be this bad. I’m sure there’s a few others that agree with this sentiment. Sorry if I forgot you!
Good chance Hawks get a good player and still have Dcat, Kane, Strome, Hagel etc. looking at these guys. Were the Hawks really that far off? Now they’re struggling to find anyone who can play at this level. Maybe I’m wrong here. But MVR beat the drum of do not strip this thing down beyond the studs, and they did. Now it’s a wreck of unwarranted proportions. And the kids will pay the price.
I love these boards because we can learn a lot from the posters here. Last time myself and MVR had EPIC debates over the rebuild. Back in 2008/09 till recently. I feel that was right more than 50% of the time. However, I feel MVR has been right 70% of the time with our current debates. It’s hard to argue results. MVR has been right in his approach. Hawks should follow that!!!

It sucks seeing so many beloved Hawks moved or let go but if they kept Debrincat, Hagel, Strome, Kane, etc, they wouldn't have got Bedard and the system still would've been depleted. Unfortunately KD had to fill roster spots with short term bandaids but more guys are turning pro and next season the team will be much younger and they'll really start to grow together. I joined the old boards in 06 and there were a lot of great debates on how to fix that mess when only a few thousand people were in the stands. One thing most of us agreed on is you have to build it from the back out, Seabs and Keith started the youth movement, now we have Vlasic and other young dmen getting NHL ice time with a good group in Rockford. The pieces are coming and next summer KD should get a high end free agent for Bedards third season and take some pressure off him.

I try to familiarize myself with a handful of other teams to follow former Hawk players,so I can't say any more than the rest of us about the teams I don't follow. I never suggest this expensive FA or that blockbuster trade,I try to keep an eye out a potential 'diamond in the rough' who's age appropriate and might fall through a team's cracks instead. These players are out there and they rarely demand much of a return. Sometimes you gotta mine a lotta ore to find that 'diamond in the rough'! I highly doubt most NHL fanbases would expect their new GM's rebuild would include trading talented players in their early-mid 20's but our's did and it's water under the bridge for me at this point and since I can't watch the Hawks........it gives me a bunch of other games to watch and I watch a bunch too. The system IS now well stocked, highly touted and my expectations are as high as the rest of ours regardless of how I feel about personnel moves at the NHL level. Trades,FA signings and most important of all, player assessment will be as important as player development to any rebuild, how do we grade the young GM in these departments so far?

Ill do a quick chime in. I was against the tear down to the studs, I only had a problem with people saying its the only option I hate that term taught my kids never to use that term. Always lots of options. Figured the Hagel trade was one that they would not win unless his game slipped a top 6 forward that plays all situations with jam not many of them out there. I understand why KD did it. I cant give him credit because the Keno balls came in thats silly. He was hoping 88 and 19 would just wave there last year of NMC that was a mistake. As far as will his plan working 3 more years and we should be able to gauge. I am very excited about our prospects but just look at team Canada WJ not a blackhawk on it 4 Philly on it my point is yes we are restocking but so are many teams. As much as I dont like KD I want this to work.

I highly doubt that the players you mentioned that got traded would lead this shitty team much further than they are. BUT….. there would be a foundation laid down of professional good players who wanted to be here. Maybe trade one of them. I cannot blame KD for taking the Hagel trade. The trade for Mrazek was genius. No other way to describe it. Got a first round pick for the best goalie in the National. Now if he weaponized his cap space more, maybe he gets a few solid prospects and picks up good players for nothing? Rangers did it. KD already had Vlasic, EDM, Allan already in the pipeline. Could have taken advantage of teams cap problems. We don’t know the scenarios would have worked out. But he crushed this roster into less than nothing. It’s gonna take 4-5 years to build it up. And not into a Cup contender, but rather just a team sniffing around the playoffs. Utah is still trying to make something outta their situation, they won’t make the playoffs again. They still need 4-5 more good players. And a goalie to boot. Sens did the same thing over 6 years ago. But started the year down almost 8 years ago. Still no playoff game yet. I will stand corrected, I think the era of full rebuilds is over. I was 100% on board. But teams can turn things around quickly. Even the Blues are in a mini rebuild or retool. But at least they’re trying to get better. I think it can be expedited to 3-4 years with using cap space and picks!!!

Great deal, good thing Soderblom is playing much better. Thing is, according to some, Soderblom loses his waiver eligibility in something like 5 games. If Broissoit had been healthy Arvid would be safely ensconced in Rockford. Now if he keeps up with his good numbers he’ll be lost when, if, Broissoit returns, barring trades.

Yeah that's to bad, would've been perfect to send Soderblom down. And Broissoit will be reevaluated in six weeks, so it could be 2mnths+ before he's cleared. When/if he clears he should be sent to Rockford if Soderblom is still playing solid.

But at least they’re trying to get better. I think it can be expedited to 3-4 years with using cap space and picks!!! My 22-year-boy called me last night from his house at school in a full panic. The power in the kitchen had gone out. None of his six roommates could figure out how to reset the breaker. They just did not know what to look for. These are all smart kids - way more capable than I was at their age in many ways. But they are still very young and impressionable. There is still much for them to learn. NHL hockey is played by kids my boy's age. Unlike baseball, most of the prospects break into the league between 19-22 without the extensive college and minor league development. They need adult supervision, and not just from the coaching staff, just to get them prepared for life. They need consistency and direction. Constant roster turnover means there is no leadership in the dressing room. The UFAs typically have no stakes in the game. They are here to make money. In baseball, players do not need much time to familiarize themselves with their teammates. The game is primarily static and individualistic: a pitcher attempts to fool a hitter. The defence is positioned by the coaching staff and reacts to each play. You can tank a baseball roster and rebuild on the fly easily because the players are older and don't need much time to adjust to teammates and new surroundings. Hockey, on the other hand, is a game of constant motion. For a player to make a successful play, he needs to recognize the tendencies of his linemates. This takes time - if not years than certainly months. The only way now for the Hawks to improve is to develop some consistency with the lineup. We need veterans who care about building a "team." We need leaders willing to take the role of mentor and follow through when a kid needs a father figure. We also need a consistent lineup with the same guys playing together for months at a time. I opposed the tear down because I was concerned about team chemistry and leadership. Once it is gone, it takes a real effort to get it back. The longer Davidson allows this present motley crew to play together, the more cohesive they will become. They will improve exponentially over the next six to twelve months if the general manager stays out of the way.

Regarding Soderblum: Now is the kid's chance to claim the roster spot full time.
Should he continue to play well over the next couple of months, the job is his. If so, Davidson waives Broissoit. It's unlikely another team would claim or trade for him given the injury history and the contract, but if it happens so be it. Broissoit might to finish the season in Rockford and re-establish his market value.
On the other hand, should Soderblum falter, he goes to Rockford without any real concerns about a waiver claim.
Either way, I doubt we have any real concerns about losing a goalie for nothing.
