damn..i guess it's true, rumours have been circulating for about the last 7 hours, but i really thought it was b.s. 2 weeks short of his 32nd birthday.
a few hours ago they said JG and his brother were on bikes in the new jersey area and were hit by a drunk driver. no idea if this is true.
i never had much good to say about gaudreau but i'm truly sorry he's gone.

I guess he was a really awesome Dude. His team mates would make fun of him for his eating habits. He’d eat peanut butter and jelly with the crust cut off. Or have to have chicken fingers. His nickname was Jonny Ham and Cheese. He ate like a 10 year old boy. It sucks when we lose a good guy like that. I’ve heard a few other stories about him that are hilarious. Devastating to hear this!!!

Higgins was traveling north when he shifted to the southbound lane so he could pass a car and SUV traveling ahead of him. When he tried to return to the northbound lane, the driver of the SUV had moved into the center of the highway to “safely pass the two pedal cyclists traveling north on the right side of the roadway,” police said. “Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right and struck the two pedal cyclists [from behind]. As a result of the collision, the two pedal cyclists sustained fatal injuries.”” Drunk driver trying to pass in the right lane instead of left. Most likely didnt see the Gaudreaus and hit them

He undoubtedly couldn't see the bikes because of the SUV to start with.

Just read a story about JG getting killed along with his brother while they were out bike riding and a DUII motorist tried to pass another car on the right; and killed the bicyclists in the right side bike lane. This is a death penalty case in my world, although I know my world does not mesh with the real world. If not the death penalty then chop off the driver's feet and hands so he will never again be able to operate a motor vehicle. Give him his choice.

some interesting numbers taken from a tweet... We're hoping to be a little bit more personal today while talking about Johnny Gaudreau's NHL stats and career. Something we have always found absolutely insane is how his playstyle had so much skill that he basically transcended the need for hitting.
— In the 2020 season, he had 1 hit in the entire year while collecting 58 points.
— In the 2024 season, he had 2 hits in the entire year while collecting 60 points.
— Arguably his best NHL season was the 2021/22 campaign where he 40 goals, 75 assists, and 115 points playing in Calgary on the best line in hockey - he managed the most points in a season with under 15 hits (115) in the history of hits being tracked as a stat.
— He seldom hit but managed to be one of the most lethal players in hockey through pure skill, talent, and hard work.
— We mentioned how dominant he was in 2022 on the line with Tkachuk and Lindholm. Gaudreau in 21/22 had the highest +/- from a forward (+64) since Wayne Gretzky in 1987 who was a +69. When he was on the ice, he was the epitome of out-skilling your opponent. There might not be a more dominant line this century and it was headlined by a 5'9, skill-first winger who had to fight to make it into the NHL.
Johnny exemplified the new age of hockey as it exists today, highlighting how skill can make you a threat regardless of your size.
We've seen suggestions of potential awards named in honour of Johnny. If we were to offer a suggestion, the NHL could introduce a "Johnny Gaudreau Award" which highlights the player who best utilizes skill to their advantage in a given year - something Johnny certainly would have won, had it existed, multiple times in his career.
Rest in Peace Johnny Gaudreau.

Oh, this is so fucked up! As a year-around bicycle commuter, I have to deal with morons like this every day! one of the news shows this morning showed a helicopter view of the accident scene. good paved road but with zero shoulders. just got back from a 3 day ride myself. if i'm on a route for the first time, i spend a lot of time on google earth/streetview making sure the roads i'm going to be on have a decent sized shoulder. big risk everywhere riding on a highway with no shoulders, but i think thailand would be one of the worst. anyways...i'm a bit surprised how many tributes are pouring in. i guess i never knew how much JG was loved by his teammates.

Not because Johnny was a hockey player and I love hockey. I’d say the same exact thing if two homeless people were riding bikes. The lives of so many are shattered. Destroyed forever. Drunk or not, that’s just really reckless. He should pay the price for this. Cannot let that go unpunished. Johnny has 2 young kids. His brother Matt has one on the way. It’s so heartbreaking. Cannot believe we have to think about this situation let alone talk about it. Anyone whose lost close friends at a young age knows the pain it causes. I remember posting on here after a close friend died. It was April 9 2013. Hawks beat the Wild 1-0. My buddy was over watching the game, when he left he went home and killed himself. No clues to his plans at all. 29 years old. Absolutely crushed me. Although that was his own doing. It affected a lot of people for a long time. I can’t even imagine what those families are going through. Life ain’t fair!!!

Unless I missed it no apologize or I am sorry for what happened. If you read Johnny's wife statement/post it will bring a normal person to tears. RIP Johnny and Matt.

Cant find anything on how fast the drunk driver was going. Did he try to stop or just plowed them off the road? Got to be more than a sideswipe for them to end up getting killed. I thought i read somewhere the first responders said that both of them were already dead when they arrived?

Such a tragedy sorry...i might have been blowing a bit of smoke up you know where. it was an SUV, not an RV the drunk guy was attempting to pass. still might have made it difficult to see. but yeah....why even try it unless you're loaded. no shoulder to speak of and a power pole of some sort would've been in his way as well, not to mention the solid yellow line. Higgins struck Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, from behind shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday as the two were riding their bikes on County Road 551, a rural stretch of road in Oldsman Township in Salem County, New Jersey, police said.
Higgins was northbound and pulled into the southbound lanes to pass a slower-moving car in front of him, according to an incident report. When he tried to re-enter the northbound lanes, a northbound SUV in front of him moved to the middle of the road to pass the Gaudreau brothers, who were traveling north on bicycles on the right side of the road. Higgins tried to pass that SUV on the right and struck the Gaudreau brothers from behind, according to the incident report.ironically...from beginning of the same article: A New Jersey man arrested in a suspected drunken-driving crash that killed Blue Jackets star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Thursday night has been placed on leave from the addiction treatment facility where he works.Gaudenzia, an addiction treatment company with centers in the northeast United States, confirmed in a Facebook post that Sean Higgens was an employee.www.dispatch.com/story/sports/2024/09/03/blue-jackets-johnny-gaudreau-crash-sean-higgins-addiction-rehab-center/75054395007/

Possibly, but it is stupid as hell to pass on the right. In Left-hand drive/right hand travel countries you do not have a clear view of the right side of the road if a vehicle is in front of you; that's why the "don't pass on the right" laws exist--they were written in blood. I get the mindset; I think most of us do. If we're trying to get somewhere on a 2-lane highway slow vehicles are annoying. Couple a slow vehicle with an assclown driver in said slow-moving vehicle that won't let you do a safe, legal pass and it's frustrating as hell. But, there's a reason those laws exist and it's because of these very reasons. The assailant was likely driving intoxicated, they attempted to cross a solid yellow line (there was a cross-street ahead with limited visibility), and when the leading SUV veered to the left to give JG and his brother some room the assailant passed on the right. To me, that's 3 reasons right there why that twatwaffle needs prison time and should be forced to use public transit only for the rest of their lives.
