The Caps ran off three beauties in a row after losing a tough,home opener to NJ,hung the 1st 'L' of the season on Vegas and Dallas,then got revenge on the Devils last night on the road. Say what you want,but after losing cup winning #1&2 centers Backstrom and Kuznetsov,Dylan Strome's been a God-send for the Caps.
Second in team scoring to Ovi his 1st season in Washington with 23/65,led his team last year with 27/67 and finds himself leading again so far this year with 4/7 through 4 games,seeing a career high in TOI and winning well over half his draws.
After 'Harry Potter' got the well deserved boot after 13 games back in '21',Dylan has started 236 games,missing only one to injury in his 1st Caps' season,seeing ZERO healthy scratches for his next three HC's and putting up 75gls and 187pts since........after being treated like a POS for two plus seasons!

D-Cat potted 41 in his sophomore campaign and Strome had 51pts in 58 gms and won 45% of his draws at a gangly 21-22 years old........and with Perllini as a 3rd wheel for much of the year. The following season found D-Cat in a 3rd line checking role after a 41gl season and Strome skatin' wing on the same line (with Kampf @center if I recall) when he wasn't benched for IDIOTICALLY long periods. I dunno know how TF a young HC entering his 1st full season doesn't embrace his two budding stars after showing their obvious chemistry the year before but they were both either demoted and/or scratched instead the following season.........right from the get-go too! |

Ovi is starting to heat up for the Caps. 3 goals the last 2 games. Ovi had to be nursing a nagging injury the first half of last year, he looked like himself the second half and so far this year, he's developed some very nice chemistry with Strome too. Their 'character line' as their announcers call it has Taylor Raddysh skating a very effective role with 2gls and 4pts so far,the 6'3" 200lb forward is still only 26 and had a 20gl season @24........another asset lost for nothing at an age where big,gangly players start to figure things out. The kid followed-up that 20gl year with a total regression,5gls/14pts in 73 games and he looked like a different player. Unfortuneately he hasn't been the only young player who's regressed the last few years. |

Imagine how Buffalo fans feel, lost him for nothing. I watched him closely since he was acquired by Chicago because he was always on the scoresheet in Red Deer, the highlights showed a guy with a high IQ and drive. He was a fan favorite quickly in Chicago and Foley talked about him a lot. It shouldn't be a surprise he's doing great when he's entering his prime. You're right, no GM could pass up two 1st round picks, plus 2 forwards who are 6'3" in their mid 20s, lost both for nothing but they still have Moore and Boisvert. Both have high ceilings, especially when scouts have used McDavid and Toews to describe certain aspects of their games. Just another example of a team that let a good,young player 'fall through the cracks' or get lost in the shuffle. I guess in Hagel's case, his willingness to play a physical/energy role when he came up made it easy to 'pigeon-hole' him as little or nothing more but I believe you and I both thought he had a lot more to offer. His "high IQ and drive" are on display every game and every shift, he's no longer tasked with that physical/energy role but his TOI is at a career high and Cooper trusts his two-way game and penalty killing big time.....the snarl is still there when necessary too. The kid's missed ONE game in 2 1/4 seasons in TB and is on pace to surpass his 26gls/75pts season. Carolina acquired both Forsling and Forsberg in the DeHAAN trade, they gave Forsberg 3 starts before waiving him and Forsling NONE before waiving him. Forsling became one of the league's best all around D-men and Forsberg pitched his 2nd SO of the season for Ottawa Saturday night. More examples of teams not having room for all of their young players or just losing patience, this will continue to happen. Meanwhile Strome is has 4 goals, 13 assists and a +10 to start the season with great chemistry with Ovi. |

did a quick search to see how many strome had assisted on. turns out it's been all 10. 5 primary and 5 secondary.
as it stands now, strome's 18 assists has him tied for second in the league, one behind mackinnon. and his +11 puts him 2 back of the league lead.
edit: he's still tied for second but mackinnon's up to 22 assists.

2 more goals (so far) for ovechkin. still 15 minutes in the 3rd. of course, if he played for us i'd be a fan but as it stands i'm not really. i'm sure he'll get over it. : ) and imo while he's far from the greatest player, i have to say he could be the greatest goal scorer...even if his career ended tonight. gretzky's nhl career spanned from 1979/80 to 1998/99. during that time frame, the league wide save percentage average was under .900% except for the last 3 years of his career when it climbed to .902, .904 and .906%. in fact, 11 seasons gretzky played, nhl averages were .880% or lower. ovechkin's career started in 2005/06. from then until now the average save percentage has always been over .900% and as high as .915%. over long careers, those numbers add up. i reckon if ovechkin played in gretzky's era, he'd top wayne's numbers significantly. no big shocker that gretzky's career shooting percentage was 17.6% while ovechkin's to date is 13.0%. www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask?q=nhl+league+average+save+percentage+by+year+1979-80+to+2022-23 |

Don't think for a minute that Strome's sweet dishes didn't help Ovi get goin' last year and help him lead the league this year. He's an elite passer now and his skating and defense also improved with quality coaching......you don't lead the league in +/- by not coming back. I guess the 'nay-sayers' will attribute his success since he got booted to his teammates or suggest he's too soft to be a 1LC,all I can say is watch a few Caps games or at least look at his stat sheet before going with a three year old opinion of a young player. Look at Strome's stat sheet from his last year here @24 and remember the 6'3" center was allowed to F'ing walk. After 22/48 52.3FO% in 69gms.....Potter sat him the first 13 before he got canned. A massive 'swing and a miss' by the inexperienced GM! Like you said...."let's see". |

I do believe he’s an overall better player. But the points come from his linemates. When he’s not with them, he struggles. I’m not mad about him being let go, I’m upset that they got absolutely nothing for him!!!

Would he look good Centering 98 hell yes. Superstars drive lines really good players play on those lines. |

He obviously won't keep up this year's early pace but he was 2nd in team scoring his 1st year in Washington,led the team last year and is again this year. He hasn't always skated with Ovi 5 on 5 but his last two plus seasons since he left have seen no struggles my friend........his last here was pretty solid for a 24yro center too. The Caps were a team in decline only two years ago with most of their best players aging-out ,badly injured or problematic and Ovi played the worst first half of his career last year but Dylan Strome has been a trusted and consistent player for them through-out. For the veteran Laviolette and for the young Carbery. Top-six forwards play with other top-six forwards as long as they compliment their line mates and Strome has done that ....from the center position. His last three seasons before this year's hot start have seem him averaging .775PPG,.310GPG and 52% at the dot, for two different teams and three different HC's. Just a soft guy who's carried by his line mates is a tired old misconception but it appears to have staying power........that's called denial. |
