So it’s weird for a prairie boy but I’m hooked on this regatta going on right now in New Zealand. It sounds boring but these foiling monohulls can get up to highway speeds with sometimes spectacular results. The USA entry is in the semis now against the Italian entry, trying to come back from seriously damaging their yacht in a 50 mph capsizing. Winner goes against Britain to see who challenges the Kiwis for the cup. Check it out for free on YouTube. Last night’s races below, two more tonight.

shit. i meant to watch this a while ago but i kind've forgot about it. not a huge fan of the racing but that's some pretty cool shit. i'm in a similar boat as you. i'm a prairie boy and i've not sailed a foot in my life but the last few years i've been really interested in sailboats, as in crossing oceans as a live-aboard....what they call blue water cruising. i know i'll never ever buy one....i'm way too old to start and not nearly rich enough....but i follow about a dozen or more sailing channels on YT and i'm always looking at sailboats for sale. i don't know why it interests me like it does. i did work on a drillship and another floating oil rig (semi-submersible) for a few years so i know port and starboard and fore and aft but i'm far from being any sort of a mariner. i was drilling department, the marine department took care of all the ship related stuff. anyways....it's fun to dream about. if i'd have stumbled onto it 25 years earlier i'm not sure where i'd be now. most likely drowned. : )

The real America’s Cup starts in a couple of days, the Italian Prada vs, the defenders Team New Zealand. COVID screwed things up of course. Just watching the racing and seeing all the boats on the water makes it seem that just like every kid in Canada was putting on his first pair of Tackaberry’s a Kiwi kid was jumping into a Laser and learning how to sail. It’s never too late to learn GT, jump in. I’ll follow your YouTube channel.

I’ve worked in industry long enough to know when safety and redundant systems are important...until they’re not. Things have gotten better lately but I’m guessing you have some tales.

Things have gotten better lately but I’m guessing you have some tales. yeah....the big disasters get all the press. i'd say normally i was in the most danger in the taxi from the hotel to the heliport, or vice versa. but seriously...the rig i finished up on, formerly called the "galaxy driller" (hence my handle) was built in '77. it was ancient by oilfield standards. many times in rough weather, or when hoisting loads approaching the rig's limit, i don't know if i'd say i was scared, but definitely uneasy. a lot of "what ifs" dance thru your head. but the scariest part was working for the indian government oil company, which we did for a few years. most of the "company men" had little or no oilfield experience and only took orders from shore. no matter how stupid the orders were, it was hard to make them deviate because "that's what town wanted." i won't ramble on...the old girl by now has been driven up onto a beach somewhere in bangladesh or india and has been chopped up into razor blades. pretty interesting job, when this flatlander started on the rigs i never thought i'd end up offshore.

Guaranteed it’s better than what we just watched.

I never thought something like this would be that exciting but I’m really wrapped up in it. And beer helps, I killed at least three Polish Zywiec’s, my current favourite beer. Attachments:

How did you get into it. The racing i mean? I was a sea cadet and went to camp near Comox on Vancouver Island on the inside channel. Learned how to sail, barely, there. Everything else just sorta followed, although I’ve never sailed since the sport has just always fascinated me.

Saving up for a mobility scooter myself.
