i've only owned mostly lovable but half wit dogs in my life, but a friend of mine had an australian sheperd like this one and that dog was likely the smartest dog i ever come across.

the one that chased me down on my bike and bit me was almost this fast. 🤔 I smell exaggeration... how fast can you get up to riding around your place there? for some reason I picture it being busy enough that you can't just tear ass around. you do go in the early am, though. regardless, if something like that come running after me alone, I dunno if I would try and race him. just carry a baton with me... how would that turn out for me?

(13 mph) i've got an app on my phone that tells me this. but these fat tired bikes aren't really made for speed though....but i do like my bike. that sounds pretty slow (especially in mph!) but i'm giving it shit as much as an obese 61 year old can at least. put it this way....i'm not just pedalling with my knees pointed out while whistling a happy tune and ringing my bell. i'm working hard. speaking of a baton, there was an english guy here, just died of a heart attack at 71 a couple weeks back. he was a fairly serious cycler in his day and still was riding quite a bit right up until his coronary. i seen him a few days before he died, knees all scabbed up. he had a golf club shaft (head removed) stuck in a piece of PVC pipe tie wrapped onto his frame. he'd pull his trusty 1 wood shaft from his "hilt" and swing it at offending dogs. well, swinging it at a dog, he ended up somehow putting the shaft thru his front spokes and arse over teakettle he went. i could see myself doing that as well, and i'm not sure pissing off an already angry dog is the way to go. i don't go so early any more....too many dogs about. i do have a different strategy if i see trouble. instead of speeding up i slow right down as slow as i can. they don't seem to be so interested in chasing a target that isn't moving so fast. anyways....tomorrow is day 9 off the grog. been stuck at 109 kg (240 pounds) for about a month. pissing me off to no end. so 9 days no beer and i'm now down to 107.5 kg....so progress made. other than being at work, i don't think i've been 9 days off the piss since i was about 13. : D

Guys, did not visit this thread, but surely a lot of great links. The "three types of dogs with water" amused me the most. And I'll surely show the video with the calming down of an authistic person to my boys. They love and respect animals, but this will surely give them another good example of what animals and dogs especially are able to be tought.

Last week I took my 13 year old boy to the vet to get x-rays to see how his arthritis was progressing, and to lay out a game plan to help him manage. During the x-rays they found a 14 cm (5.5") tumor and needed an operation to remove his spleen. I was so shocked, but the vet said it's something that doesn't present itself, and many times the only time it's found is after it's ruptured, putting the animals life at high risk. Fortunately for my boy, it was found in time and he had surgery Thursday and now recovering.
On a side note, his arthritis is actually not as bad as the previous vets office had told me. I was initially told he had hip dysplasia, which he does not. And his arthritis is in 1 knee and not very severe.
This was a new vet office for me. I haven't been able to find one since moving to Florida I've been happy with. But I think I have now. They told me when we went in for the initial visit they were fully booked for 2 weeks, but made arrangements to get Sonny in the next day for ultrasound and additional tests, and the following day for surgery. One of the vets also gave me her email address to reach out to her with any concerns I may have post op. They have been so outstanding in their care for Sonny. I was looking for a vet who cared about my dogs as much as I do. It appears I have found that vet.

Many doggies don't survive at that age if they're large breeds.

Update on my boy. We saw vet on Thursday to remove staples and get biopsy results on spleen. Tumor was benign, so no cancer. He's doing things he had stopped before the surgery, such as coming into my yard with me and following me around as I skim my pool. He's also keeping up on our walks around my neighborhood. Still healing but vet said he has no restrictions. I wish I could post his pics here but run into picture size issues all the time. He's such a sweet boy and now he's got a new lease on life.
