So after a disappointing season, the Cubs are looking to re-evaluate and try and bring back that championship buzz they had when all these can't miss prospects came up. But I actually am starting to see an owner who has finally gotten everything he wanted and now is backing off spending to improve.
Among all Ricketts talk about wanting to be a viable force in free agency, he said he needed the revenue that only scoreboards could bring, so he got his scoreboards. Then he built a hotel across the street. Now going into 2020 he's moving the Cubs to their own network called Marquee. It's everything he said he needed, yet last off season Theo started the cry poor mantra, and it's starting to sound much the same this year, with Theo saying that it will be several years before the new network will generate money to put towards improving the team. What we as fans want to see is improvement and not hear excuses. Owners raise ticket prices every year to the point where it's nearly impossible for a family to go to many games anymore. Then when they get what they want, they start crying poor and won't be using all that revenue to bring in the players necessary to compete for championships.
Cubs are going to save big money by letting Maddon, Hamels, Morrow, Zobrist all walk. But it sounds like going after any big ticket free agents, their actually going to talk to the guys who are nearing free agency and see if they can sign them long term on the cheap. And if they can't they're going to look to move them. I see a team in the very near future without the likes of Bryant, Contreras, Schwarber, Baez. And with an aging pitching staff signed for several more years. This does not bode well for a team that was hoping to see World Series trips regularly for the foreseeable future. And with a farm system nearly barren, I think any window the Cubs had may be over. Lester is no better then a 3-5 starter anymore, and the same with Quintana. Darvish is certainly not a #1 at this point in his career and Hendricks will never be a true #1. So it looks like the starting pitching staff has a group of 3 - 5 starters. The bullpen is a shambles.
Thinking, just like the Hawks, we've seen the last of the playoffs if the Cubs start going on the cheap again this off season.

Congratulations to Anthony Rizzo on winning his 3rd Gold Glove. The heart and soul of the team!

I’m not from Chicago, only passed through a couple of times, but somehow have become a fan of every team in that city. Bobby Hull led me to the Hawks, Fergie Jenkins to the Cubs and then the rest just fell into place. But for all you native Chicagoans, when the team above finally broke through after a century of futility, most of you been fortunate enough to see all your major sports teams win in your lifetimes. Pretty cool.

I was 4 in '61' and 7 in '63' so I can't say I remember much about either(a bit of the Bears),I was 29 when I was able to enjoy my first Chicago title. I suffered all 23 years of sports misery growing up to see all five teams win at least one over the next 24 years.....The Bears beatin' the Pats like a rug was one hell of a way to end that streak!

When I started playing ball I gravitated to third base because Ron Santo became my favourite player. And the Bears? What happened to the Bears? That team could have been one for the ages.

Might have answered my own question here about the next year. Forgot how overt and dirty this play was.

first title I got to see was the '85 Bears as a young lad. first Super Bowl I remember. I was already working on becoming a Chicago fan, but that game sealed it. I was officially a Chicago sports fan after that.
luckily for me the Blackhawks were already fair and would be competitive for the next decade (although no titles) and some guy named Jordan was just getting started with the Bulls....

I had nothing but awe for Wilbur Wood pitchin' both ends of a double header or the idiosyncrasies of a great player like Ritchie Allen,I was born on the south side and since the old man was a Sox fan...…….admitting I was a TransSoxual wasn't all that hard!LOL! '71' was as bad as it got for this already traumatized 14yro and another finals loss after losing Bobby Hull the summer before in '73' just made sports nothing but misery in Chicago. How many Cups coulda been won by keeping Phil and Bobby in the fold? Bears went 14-2 & 12-4 the two seasons following their SB w/o Mc Mahon most of the time and the Mc Cheapski's let players walk too but kickin' the Pats up n down the field for three hours was worth it. The dynasty that Micheal,Scotty and Phil brought the Bulls was also well worth it,they might have run the table in the 90's if Jordan didn't take two years off and if Jackson wasn't run outta town like a bum right after his 2nd threepeat......only to get five more and a 3rd repeat in LA.

Yeah, getting two wins in one night is one of baseballs bizzaro stories.

My late brother in law called me on a Wed night in Oct of '05' and said 'what're doin' Saturday night?",he was a successful guy who invited me to some great games in the past so I said "I'm in". When he asked "didn't you grow up a Cubs fan?"......it was the 1st time I remember coming up with the term....I had to think of something quick!LOL! It cracked him up and I got to go to the first WS game in Chicago in 46 years. Another beaut I came up with was.... After one too many women asked me why I wasn't on facebook,I took to saying I'm on sitonmyfacebook and I'm always lookin' for a new friend!LOL!

Anyone else think this season is going to get shut down before they get to 60 games? The number of games/series already cancelled due to Coronavirus is insane. I read where the Phillies and Marlins are going to play 7 games in 5 days, and the Cardinals haven't played in around a week and a half.

Which team is more in need of house cleaning, the Chubs or the Hawks? Baez (I think), Rizzo and Bryant went 1 for 24 in the Marlins series. Each team is going to need to do some shipping out and replacing. Can't keep doing the same thing with failure all over again and expect the result to be any different.

Each team is going to need to do some shipping out and replacing. Can't keep doing the same thing with failure all over again and expect the result to be any different. If I'm the Cubs, I'm trying to get Lindor and signing him to be the SS longterm. Switch hitter with more discipline at the plate then Baez, can lead off (everyone knows the Cubs need a leadoff man), and just as good defensively. Schwarber has to go as well.
Cubs are a team full of all or nothing hitters. So sign Rizzo. The issues will be the financial affect of the pandemic on all major sports. Too many of the players on the Cubs who might normally attract attention from other teams are going into their last years and will be free agents next season. So either the Cubs are going to get lowball offers for guys like Baez, Bryant, Schwarber or there will be no interest at all as they can await 2021 free agency.
Willson Contreras may be the most tradeable because he has 2 years left on his deal, did a much better job at pitch framing, and is a solid, although inconsistent offensive threat. His strong arm and ability to pick runners off, or shut down the limited running game in todays game makes him a valuable trade commodity. They have Caratini and minor league up and comer Amaya able to take over. You may be able to fill several holes by trading Contreras even if you can't move the others. Schwarber goes for what you can get for him, preferably a contact hitter with some speed. Send him to an AL team and let someone else figure out his offensive inconsistencies. If you could get Lindor and pair him with Baez for a year, do it, give Lindor SS, move Baez to either 3rd (especially if Bryant is sent to Cleveland or elsewhere) or 2nd for his final season in a Cubs uniform.

Looks like the Cubs replaced Theo Epstein with Stan Bowman. Trading CY Young runner up for a crap starting pitcher who's claim to fame is he eats up innings, and 4 prospects so young there is no way to know if they'll ever pan out in the major leagues. And somehow San Diego kept their top 7 prospects. If this doesn't sound like Bowman stupidity, I don't know what does.
Chicago has gone from having 2 championship caliber teams just 5 years ago to possibly 2 bottom feeders for years to come. Both with billionaire owners who have no clue how to hire sports experienced personnel to build "AND" maintain championship caliber.
Only team left to follow will be the White Sox.

You suffer through an injury plagued season to see Darvish regain his status as one of the game top hurlers and then trade him? Stories mention the 59M the team won't have to pay him.......is that what the team's about now? Lester says he's willing to take less than the 25M his option would have been but there's reportedly little interest from the club and look for Bryant to be gone too. Rebuilding with Theo calling the shots is one thing......rebuilding without Theo might be a lot different.

Rebuilding with Theo calling the shots is one thing......rebuilding without Theo might be a lot different. Ricketts has been crying poor (much like Rocky was while jacking up ticket prices) for the past several seasons. He started out by saying in order to compete for the top free agents, he needed scoreboards to sell advertising rights, a hotel, and a TV channel. And as soon as he had all 3, instead of putting it into the players, he started talking about needing to cut payroll to stay below the tax threshold. So he's got all the revenue producing items he wanted, plus an added bonus of breaking a 108 year championship drought. And just like Rocky, he jacked up ticket and concession prices. Now it's time to get rid of the young core who were coming up for large paydays in the next year or 2.
Again, if that's what they plan, then trade Darvish and demand the top prospects, not a garbage pitcher and 4 teenagers who may never reach the major leagues. That screams they are rebuilding for 8-10 years down the line. But hey, at least the billionaire Ricketts will be able to afford to go to McDonalds once a week for lunch now!

Lester wants to play ball after the the team turned down his option but the team doesn't and it sounds like Contreras is the next to go........maybe Bryant. The team won it's division by three games last year and the FO's dumpin salary? Every article I read and every report I see or hear mentions the team's cutting salary as a strategy after getting EVERYTHING they wanted......how much does one F'n family need?

Looks like the Cubs aren't screwing around with their old stars trying to recapture the old glory. They appear to be going for the full rebuild after trading off Rizzo, Baez, Kimbrel and now, Bryant. Guess someone in their front office made up their mind and are doing the rebuild with mucho gusto. I don't know if it is good, or bad, I just know it is just a much different approach to the future than this other Chicago team that has been struggling.

Yeah but do you just wreck a team that won it's division by four games last year? I know they looked bad this year, trading away the Cy Young runner up in the offseason will do that to a team but all of em? Will they find a better SS than Baez? This Cubs team has missed the post season once since 2015,winning a WS and playing in two other NLCS series. You know Cubs' history as well as I do jack......before this team was assembled the franchise won ONE postseason series in modern MLB postseason history. Is another 108 years on tap? Sure,Theo moved out some big contracts for prospects and those prospects did the UNTHINKABLE but the guys Theo moved out never won anything and it ain't Theo making these moves now......he had enough sense to walk away from his high paid position seeing what was coming. Meanwhile the Billionaires have one of the lowest payrolls in the league, their new hotel, disgusting jumbotrons and every building and rooftop bordering the 'Ivy covered burial ground'....Steeve Goodman.

I’m watching the Cubs vs Blue Jays. It’s in extra innings. I wasn’t aware of the rule that MLB has put in place. In extra innings, each team will start with a runner on 2nd. I know now that they said it was due to Covid to speed the game up. But as a purist, especially in baseball. I don’t like it at all. Even replay isn’t in my book for MLB. Maybe in the playoffs I wouldn’t mind it a bit. But not regular season.
Obviously I haven’t watched much MLB this year. Been busy. And I sure as hell haven’t seen an extra innings game. What’s anyone else think of this rule? Not a fan here!!!

What’s anyone else think of this rule? Not a fan here!!! MLB has been looking to reduce the average game time played now for the past 5-10 years. They already have implemented a pitch clock (not sure how often that is enforced), limits to the mound visits by manager, coaches, catcher/infielders and recently when a pitcher comes in, he has to pitch to a minimum of batters unless he is hurt. The runner on second automatically when the game goes into extra innings while it was during Covid it was another way to reduce the actual time game is played. It was first tried in the minor leagues and other independent leagues as a trail and now adopted by MLB. While some baseball purists like the extra innings and strategies that are involved, others did not want to see 5 and 6 hours games being played. Most of this is to try and attract new viewers/fans (mostly younger) and keep the game moving along. The days of going to a game, working a scorecard and actually following the game are long gone for the most part. Go a to game or watch it on TV and most are not paying attention, everyone is on their phones, taking selfies, drinking and discussing everything but baseball. Nothing wrong with this, just stating the obvious and with the games dragging on and pockets of no real action very easy for the fan or viewer to lose focus or concentration. There are purists out there that would love to see a 1-0 game, rather than a slugfest. The average fan and now the new ones they are trying to attract need to see action=homeruns, stealing bases, not moving a runner into scoring position by hitting to the right side. My opinion the most exciting play in baseball is a triple.

Twenty games under/twenty games out after trading nearly every popular/high paid player yet still 9th in MLB @32,781 per.........wait'll next year!!! The 14th highest payroll in the league(half of even the 5th highest team)will decrease even further with the departure of Contreas and Happ for Billionaire owners who've gotten their way on everything. The team was purchased by the Ricketts(isn't that a disease?)back in '09' for 845M but after getting to 'junk-up' the old landmark with the biggest jombo-trons in the world, building a hotel next door and buying every roof-top building along with most of 'Wrigleyville'.....the Org's valued @3.8 Billion only 13 years later.
