Furnace went out at our house. Cold night ahead. Will be fixed tomorrow. Tho time Ouch. Good luck. If anything about this recent snap taught me is I have to upgrade my secondary source of heat from the old wood fireplace I have which looks nice but sends all the heat up the flue.

Let the wood burn down to hot coals, then you can close the flue. We lost power here in Portland on Saturday, the coldest day of the winter, so we fought for survival....for three hours, but still! Today we had our own, Pacific Northwest, version of cluster-fuckery after an overnight of freezing rain.

If anything about this recent snap taught me is I have to upgrade my secondary source of heat from the old wood fireplace I have which looks nice but sends all the heat up the flue. on the topic of fireplaces... first place i ever bought was a 3 level condo down in okotoks (southern alberta) early 90's. i think the selling point for me was the wood burning fireplace in the living room. when i finally got the keys, i quickly moved in all my shit and headed up north to go drill a hole in the ground somewhere. anyways, the whole 2 weeks i was dreaming of my first fire. in the meantime, there was a huge dead or dying birch just off the edge of the lease and me and my mate dashed into town after work, rented a chainsaw and bucked that baby up. we each had a pickup full of firewood to take home, and that fueled my dream even more because birch is a nice wood for a fireplace. burns hot, no sparking or spitting like pine. and that was important to me because all that covered the front of my fireplace was kind of a woven steel curtain you'd just pull across from each side and a spark could possibly pass through if the curtain wasn't closed all the way tight, and i had brand new carpets. anyhoo...fast forward. i'm back home...it's a cold snowy night, i got the fireplace absolutely stuffed with birch...got a glass of red, some james taylor playing on the hifi, and the lights turned down low. all that was missing from my fantasy was shania twain on one side and susanna hoffs on the other both staring at me longingly...but what i had that night would have to do. all of the sudden the logs shift a bit and the biggest (and only unsplit) log i had in there happily rolls out through the iron curtain about 3 feet and stops...fully aflame. fook me...i try to corncob it with my fingers at each end but too heavy. by now smoke alarms going off on 2 levels so i run to the half bathroom off the kitchen and throw a towel in the toilet, run out and throw it over the log. a steamy, hissing sound and 2 smoke alarms now accompanied james on the hifi. so much for the new carpet. the rest of the night i spent muttering "you fckn idiot, you fckn idiot. couldn't you squeeze another couple logs in there you fckn idiot?" good thing shania and susanna weren't there...they'd be laughing to each other and saying "what a fckn idiot" as they went out the door.

Can anyone remember Reichel winning a board battle? Ever? Man, that guy is weak. Great skill but no man strength or guts.
