NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Wednesday the League’s salary cap is expected to increase for the 2020-21 season.
Speaking at the NHL general manager meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, Daly said the cap is projected to be between $84 million and $88.2 million after being $81.5 million this season.
The gap in the numbers is because of the inflator negotiation between the NHL Players Association still needs to occur. The lower end is with a 0 percent inflator and the high end is at 5 percent. Daly added collective bargaining agreement talks with the NHLPA have included creating a multi-year salary cap numbers(s).
The increase will help the Blackhawks as they look to improve their roster in hopes of making the playoffs in 2021. They’ll have seven NHL roster players set to hit free agents they could try to re-sign with forwards Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Strome (restricted free agents) and goaltender Corey Crawford (unrestricted free agent) as the most noteworthy names among the group.
NHL salary cap by season
2020-21: $84M to $88.2M
2019-20: $81.5M
2018-19: $79.5M
2017-18: $75M
2016-17: $73M
2015-16: $71.4M
2014-15: $69M
2013-14: $64.3M

I heard Frank Serevali on TSN tonight say that if the league has to shut down due to Covid 19, that their would be financial repercussions on both sides. Since it’s a 50/50 split in revenue, if playoffs were cancelled, the league would lose 500 million. The problem is that it would somehow come out of next years cap and or have massive escrow to regain the money for the owners.
Right now, I wouldn’t count on the cap moving much, and I don’t think it should. Common people are being priced out, both sides are making bank, it’s time to give back a bit now. They need to work on better TV deals to generate money!!!

As for the Shark games getting cancelled, how will they make those up. Will they be played in a different arena?

just a guess....but for now i'd have to think the games will be relocated. but of course it's a very fluid situation that's sure to get worse before it gets better. might find out more tomorrow, but for now the sharks released this statement about an hour ago. edit: relocate, or play in an empty arena.

I think they may play in an empty arena. Which the loss in revenue will be tacked on to next years cap. I think the cap may not be what people are expecting due to this illness goin round the world. Kudos to the Italians for taking the measures that the originating country should a took to stop this. It sucks, but it’s gonna affect our lives over here quite a bit. I could see all sporting events being cancelled through the end of April. It’s just touched down here, and it’ll probably spread rapidly. It sucks, but I can understand why they’d take the measures they do!!!

The CDC recommends gatherings of over 50 people should be avoided for the next 8 weeks. That would bring us into mid May and likely means the hockey season is over.
Oops, thought I was on the Coronavirus page. Meant to post this there.

More opportunities to squeeze other desperate teams.
