Just ran across this vid and it reminded me of a few things...... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq47cwMgWWcWhat truly brutal series that was How physical Q's team played How much shit Tampa gets away with and how much I enjoyed the guys who do the Florida games I’m gonna be beating the drum of the league needs to really start cracking down on interference. I know many like tough smothering hockey. But when a guy doesn’t have the puck, he shouldn’t be F***** with. The game is very quickly going back to the Devils era of trapping. This needs to end. There’s a lot of talk about the league stopping what the Blues did, and what the Habs and Islanders are doing. I feel awful for the stars. Coaches are also going back to trapping cuz it can work against offensively gifted teams. The league is going backward again. It can be tough, but also skilled. The Hawks did it. They didn’t have the lowest scoring games. They were very exciting to watch. There’s a lot of rumblings that if the Habs and Islanders make the finals with no real star skater taking a regular shift, that the league is going to finally instruct the refs to call the playoffs very close to the regular season. I for one would welcome that. It’s stupid to build a team and have your stars get shadowed and raped when they don’t have the puck. I think Florida will win a couple Cups if this happens. I think it’d be more exciting!!!

IMO,officiating has favored the Bolts and Vegas in these series if anything and I have zero problems with solid defensive teams advancing on the back of stellar penalty killing and outstanding goaltending and coaching. It's up to today's young stars to overcome and succeed in the postseason just like ours did but few of the current ones look capable.....turn the PO's into the ice capades we see all regular season and I'm the FUK out! The thought of giving guys like McJesus,Mathews or MacKinnon a constant conga-line of power plays so they can finally advance turns my stomach and goes against everything I appreciate about hockey. I didn't see anyone "Rape" Stone,he just underachieved like the other young stars this year and that's on them. Kane and Toews both fought through massive 'incidental interference' plays that went uncalled against the Wings and a physical onslaught that rivals any since against the Ducks......it's supposed to be difficult. The Habs' top four D-men were exceptional and not having Reaves in the lineup to soften those guys up and get em looking over their shoulders had to be comforting. It's okay if you like offensive hockey and I like defensive hockey but the PO's have always been called differently for a reason and changing that would alter the game completely. What the Blues did and what the Habs and Isle ae doing are two vastly different things IMO,the Blues did get away with some dirty shit but the other two teams are just playing good defense.....NO?

What the Blues did and what the Habs and Isle ae doing are two vastly different things IMO,the Blues did get away with some dirty shit but the other two teams are just playing good defense.....NO? No doubt on the defensive end. I just think the neutral zone is a no touch zone! Unless you’ve got the puck. It slows the game down. Now, I love the intensity of playoff hockey. Love it love it love it. I’m actually a proponent of defensively sound hockey. But I cannot tolerate a guy being slowed up in the neutral zone. Tampa’s 3-4 lines do nothing but slow guys up, so does Trotzs teams. So do the Habs. I guess it wins, but it comes at an awful cost. I was listening to Ray Ferraro the other day. And I thought he made a valid point. He was saying how hockey is the only sport that changes its rules come playoffs. He also said that for the league to become bigger and better, it’s gonna have to show case it’s stars. It can’t allow Mathews, McDavid, Kane, Crosby, Ovechkin etc take massive abuse away from the puck. And I fully agree. Yes Tampa is there and they have one of the best in Kucherov, Hedman and Stamkos. But due to their cap circumventing those guys have the utmost deepest team and even a little dude like Point can get in there and dominate. He’s got a lot of protection around him. He’s good, I’m not doubting that, but I doubt he carries any other team. Ferraro said that McDavid, Mathews etc are some of the highest paid, and best, and they allow a guy that makes 1/12 of them to dominate them in the playoffs. When in the regular season, their teams would get a pp. At this point, I fear the NHL is becoming a joke. Guys in the old boys club like Sweet Lou Lamoreillo, won’t change and will never vote on the rules to change in the playoffs as he’s one of the guys who gets to vote. Yes he can build a team of nobodies and take them far. But it doesn’t make it right. Again, if you like that style of play, that’s cool. I’m not against tight checking games. But the interference has to stop. Nobody wants to watch that. The game will never grow if we allow it to happen. This is why I feel Betman and co have taken the game as far as they can take it, it’s time for a fresh set of eyes on this. 30+ years is long enough. And I for one actually applaud the job they e done!!!

Those truly great players have seven cups between em because they fought though things like Detroit's 'subtle' interference non-calls,the Ducks overwhelming physicality in the WCF and Sid and Gino had to fight their way through blood bath series with Phily and other teams to advance and Ovi finally accepted Trotz' defensive assignments to finally win a cup. The sacrifice by these and other great cup winners is unthinkable by today's millennial pretenders so we better change the way the whole thing works......that sounds so 2021 to me. As far as other sports, the NBA of the great Michael Jordan era saw rugged and physical PO series, the Pistons out n out assaulted Michael and Scotty and the Nicks fought tooth and nail too. Did the Oil get swept with home ice advantage by a team who lost their last seven games this year and beat by the F'n Hawks last year because they don't get enough powerplays or because they're terribly built? I'd also like to see the young, regular season wonders go deeper and I'd also like to see McJesus on the big stage and the necessary sacrifice to get there but I haven't as of yet but they're all still young.......let's hope all of em are actually watching these games instead of playing 'NHL 21'!

Bob if you watched the Leaves series. Mathews and Marner had guys draped all over them and couldn’t get any ice. At some point it’s just not hockey. Imagine the NFL allowing receivers after the “5 yard” rule to be held up the whole way downtown the field? It’s not exciting or even entertaining. Or imagine the best shooter of all time in Steph Curry not getting the chance to shoot cuz guys are fouling him and getting away with it? I wouldn’t watch that. So how come in the NHL, we allow our stars to play the way they’re supposed to for 82 games, then they get interfered with and if they don’t fight through it they’re just millennial losers? That’s not the game they play, and the game changed not the player. So, I don’t know why anyone would want to see their favourite players get interfered with like that. Kane hasn’t done anything in the playoffs since the team has been terrible. He had a chance last year and the VGK interfered with him enough so that he wasn’t a factor. If the team was deep like Tampa, he’d of done what Kane does. But he was an absolute non factor. But…… he’s top 5 in league scoring. Same ol story of the NHL allowing the best American born player and one of the best all time get treated like trash out there. Crosby gets mauled out there, I mean the guy fights through, but that’s not what he should have to do. At the end of the day, a penalty should be just that!!!

IMO,all of toaday's great young stars combined don't have the intestinal fortitude exhibited by Patrice Bergeron in the '13' SCF..........guy was in the hospital for days afterward. And a toothless Duncan Keith must have weighted 160lbs after he helped the Hawks break the 49 year drought. I still remember Gretzky saying how the Oil were feeling pretty good about themselves after losing to the Isle in the finals and how shocked they were when they visited the NY locker room only to see guys covered in ice packs or sitting in ice tubs instead of celebrating.........the 'Great one' said he then knew what it would take to win. He fought through his share of clutching and grabbing too if I recall. Kane made five WCF and won three cups....he fought through it and he's a much smaller player than most of today's regular season wonders. For F's sake,a 20yro,small-frammed Caufield has more balls than the regular season wonders!

I just cannot for the life of me stand to see the games greatest players get mauled in the neutral zone and on their way to the net without the puck. It’s just not hockey. Gretzky didn’t have to do that, Lemieux years later called the NHL a “garage” league, although I’m sure he meant garbage. If you’ve got ice packs, it’s probably because you’ve blocked shots, or finished hits or went to the hard areas and took punishment. That’s the beauty of the game right there. The guys that are willing to put it all on the line. But when I see Schiefele literally shadowing and harassing McDavid the whole way up the ice, it’s just lunacy. It’s not hockey. If he had the puck, then by all means, make his life tough, but you can’t allow the stars to be treated horribly skating without the puck. But I do agree with your toughness comments. If McDavid can’t handle guys finishing their checks or blocking his shots, then he’s not cut out for it. But let’s hope the league allows the stars to play or anyone for that matter. And let the tough play just be that. No more interference, it’s a penalty. They should call it like that!!!

It was cross-checking people had a problem with the last year or two and now it's interference.....somebody needs to show McJesus video of Bobby Hull scoring with a guy all over him but 'NHL 21' is probably more entertaining. Excuses should never be part of postseason hockey and excuses are the only thing these millennial, regular season wonders seem to have these days. I don't know which Hawk player filled Schiefle's role the year before(maybe JT) but he's eliminated every year along with the other peter pans and blaming officiating won't change that. Maybe changing the entire way the NHL goes about it's postseason business just so some young elite, privileged and grossly overpaid guys can win a series only bothers us gray panthers and we won't be around forever so they can do what they want and I can watch what I want....or not watch. I guess I see good defense where you see all this mauling and raping..........SHAME on a 6'3" 200+lb Mark Stone for allowing himself to be raped....SHAME! How did a 20yro 5'7" 165lb Caufield not allow himself to be mauled or raped? All these regular season wonders were made incredibly wealthy BEFORE they accomplished anything and it shows!

I have mixed feeling about the officiating in the playoffs, but great debate Bob and BigT.

If you watch hockey back when they smoked. They didn’t interfere or clutch and grab. That hockey is garbage or “garage” like Lemieux said. I feel the refs should call the rules. I feel it’s embarrassing. All the league has to offer in the way of stars is on the sidelines for majority of most of the playoffs. It’s bad business to do what they’re doing. There’s absolutely no reason why good players like Mathews or Marner, McDavid, Draisaitl, Mackinnon etc are all more than capable of getting the job done, but teams slaughter them when they’re skating up the ice without the puck. Hard to get the puck when you’ve got guys draped all over you. Really difficult. Plus over a 7 game series? You’d have to do hgh, steroids, and every other thing under the sun that makes you post human.
The guys back “in the day” didn’t have to do that. They finished checks and punished guys in front of the net. Cross the blue line with your head down and you’d be down. That’s how the game was intended to be played. Not clutching grabbing and clogging up the neutral zone. The game was fine back then, it was intended for every record to be broken. Now there’s just no way in hell many records are to be broken, the game is backwards!!!

You weren't alive to see it but Bobby Hull had guys like Brian Watson draped all over him all the time and he even had a move where he held these 'shadows' off with one hand and stick handled up ice with the other. Defenders used to hook or grab on and go for a ride. Hockey has gone through REAL periods of clutch and grab and this isn't one of em IMO. It's just good defensive team play and entitled millennials without the necessary desire to advance........all these underachievers were made millionaires before they won anything. If you're playing a better offensive team, why not clog things up and trap? These are legitimate defensive strategies and TRUE superstars fight their way through or they loose.....in today's game, the young millionaires show little desire to fight through. I'll ask you this again...... Do the Oilers and Leafs loose in the 1st round EVERY year because of officiating or because they're poorly built teams? The Isle are a trapping team that clogs thing up and Tampa fought through it just like the Hawks great forwards did. Kids today need to watch this guy fight his way through..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUqnUdnKLKU

Bob, I don’t believe the Oilers are there yet. But to be swept is bad. If McDavid had 10 points in 4 games, then I’d fully agree the team is just awful. But when McDavid literally just got 106 in 56 games, then can’t do shit in the first round. I think we need to look closer. Same for Draisaitl.
The Leaves had a decent team. Probably better than the 18 wheeler that went full steam into a gas station. They were up 3-1. The Canadiens realized that they can get away with slowing the Leaves up in the neutral zone and they just frustrated them.
This is why I’m pretty much pulling for the Bolts. They’re stacked, we all can see that. But they play the right way. Point, Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman, etc etc. They have a lot of what the Hawks once had.
Also, I’ll give Forsberg a ton of credit. Guy was unreal. But I doubt McDavid is that type of player. He’s probably the most offensively gifted player we will ever see. He and Lemieux were amazing offensively, no disrespect to Gretzky at all. But he did have some pretty amazing players to play with. Lemieux turned Rob Brown into a 50 goal guy. McDavid as I see it, is the most offensively gifted player ever. Although a different era, Gretzky even said so himself.
I guess we both have a different view of utopia. I don’t want to ever see a 3-1 lead as safe. That’s what makes sports great. Remember when the Hawks were down 5-1 in 2009 vs Calgary after the first period. They came back and Seabs scored the OT winner. That was unreal. But if clutch and grab were allowed. The Hawks were buried. The NHL did such a great job coming out of the 2005 lockout with all the rule changes. Now, they’re heavily leaning back towards that again!!!

If the league decides to change the way they go about their PO business just so some underachieving, millennial millionaires can finally advance, that's up to them but they'll do it without me. Playoff hockey is the only thing that remotely resembles the game I grew up loving and should be the toughest battle of all....not an all-star game.....JMO. I don't understand people being upset with the PO's being called looser than the regular season,it's ALWAYS been that way and the best have ALWAYS found a way to fight through it. Seabs? The Wings got away with 'subtle' interference all series but that didn't stop a great team like the Hawks.....neither did the terrible late call that took a GWG away.

If that’s the case, they should just call the regular season like the playoffs. At least it gives teams a chance to design a team around it. If I built a team, and it get decimated by playoff calls of non calls. I’d be pissed. I’d actually tell my guys that when they feel an arm on them, just fall. I’d make a reverse mockery of the sport. Force the refs to call shit. As easy as it was to go the way of “defensive” hockey, the next great coaching scheme will be to coach guys to flop. And even if they only get an extra pp or two out of it. It’ll be worth it. Just watch. It’s a coming. Every time there’s expansion, coaches need to justify their team and the talent pools get watered down. Defensive hockey coming back will drive revenues down, and you’ll see guys flopping to gain an advantage!!!

Building a team that's effective in both the regular and postseason has always been a challenging balance and let's hope they call embellishment when the overpaid millennials start flopping....which wouldn't surprise me one bit if it happens. TEAM hits/60 playoffs hits/60 regular season jets 42.6 23.0 85% increase in playoffs habs 38.5 27.9 38% avs 28.5 16.4 74% vegas 37.6 21.5 75% boston 34.8 24.5 42% isles 39.0 25.5 53% 'canes 34.9 22.8 53% TB 35.6 23.8 50% i guess the only reason i'm posting this is that i was pretty impressed by how much more teams hit in the playoffs. i mean, i knew that hitting increased, i just wasn't aware by how much.

I love that aspect. Thanks for posting. I’m just not a big fan of the Islanders and how the Habs played, how the Jets played. Etc. Trapping along with clutch and grab doesn’t seem to ever really win. I think the hitting really helps. I’d also bet blocked shots are way up too. As much as we may dislike Tampa. Their style of play is much more upbeat and exciting to watch. The Panthers too. The Avs are fun to watch. Even the Hawks are fun to watch when they actually play a possession type game. That’s what I’m interested in watching. I like defensively responsible, hard hitting, fast and skilled game. Many hate watching the Isles, love the unit’s but the style of play….. mehhh!!!

But ya, I thought it’d be a bit higher. One other thing I’m not a fan of. I don’t like guys laying down or on their knees in the crease to block shots or save goals. Goalies are big enough, the blue paint should be theirs, and theirs only

Very interesting stats though GT, thanks for that side of things. Never really look at it that way, and the story is usually somewhere in the numbers!!!

Them damn French fish are tough to reel in. I have to think harpooning them is much simpler to catch them as they flail in the shallows of their own end looking for the easy phytoplankton. However that doesn’t help their cause as their easily caught and scored on by the bigger guy outta the water!!!
