great 4th round pick, an even greater blackhawk. One of the greatest defensive defensemen in franchise history is hanging up the skates.Hjalmarsson, 34, spent his first 10 seasons in Chicago, where he played a crucial role in helping the Blackhawks win three Stanley Cups. He often shut down the opponents' top players on a nightly basis and was a staple on the penalty kill.Hjalmarsson recorded 143 points (23 goals, 120 assists) and had a plus-109 rating in 623 career games with the Blackhawks. He also compiled 28 points (two goals, 26 assists) and averaged exactly 22:00 of ice time in 128 postseason contests. Only Brent Seabrook (1,374) blocked more shots in the regular season than Hjalmarsson (1,186) during the Swedish defenseman's 10-year run with the Blackhawks, and no player blocked more shots than Hjalmarsson in the postseason (306).

I'd say he had 24 goals. Didn't he score the goal in the playoffs that was overturned (against Detroit?) I think the call against the Hawks was due to Saad being tackled along the boards.
Anywho, what a great career for the human bruise. I hope he has a happy retirement and good health.

Man, what a great defensive stalwart he was. It was very easy to take him for granted back there. Seemed like a great and humble guy during his interviews too.

It was those 137 postseason games that set Hammer apart and those 306 HUGE blocks and near perfection in his own end that aged the great Sweed defender beyond his years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGDlbvRHhV8I just have to wonder what the people assessing young players for the Hawks the last few years woulda thought of young Nik's choppy/hip-y skating style and his lack of offensive numbers.

A guy who rocketed far past his draft position...an indispensable piece of the three cup winners. Nothing glitzy or flashy about his play; just hard, consistent, body sacrificing work, shift after shift, dependable as the sunrise. By all accounts a good teammate and a nice guy as well with no off ice drama.
Thanks for everything, Hammer...enjoy a well earned retirement.

Kid carried his clockweights in a wheelbarrow. One of the few d-men I was not worried about being on the ice in any situation.
Enjoy your retirement Hjammer!

In this era of overpaid sports BUMS,it's great to see Nik Hjalmarsson earned over 46 million bucks playing hockey.....just great!

He’s an old 34. What a career. This is exactly what every team needs. He was unselfish and never commanded a massive salary. Ya he signed an offer sheet, but it wasn’t for a ton of money either. They kept him and he rewarded them to keep him. I never thought of Oduya as the greatest dman, but he and Hammer were soooooo good together it wasn’t funny for the opposing team to go against Keith/Seabs then Hammer/Oduya. Those 4 minute munchers played 90% of the game. It sucks that there’s literally 2 left from the Cup runs. They may be the best top 4 we will ever see in this league, especially in the cap era.
Enjoy life now Hammer. You deserve it!!!

Hopefully they will have a nice retirement ceremony for him this coming season. dont they have those "sign for 1 day" as a final skate? i'd like to see the Hawks do something like that. Have him dress for just a game, play minimal minutes and do a farewell ceremony. Only Hawks jersey i own, and now his number is Jones'

That'd be cool - but I am guessing that would wreak more $-havoc that StanBo does not necessarily need added to his plate. A retirement announcement with him in house opening night would work, require that he wear his shin pads under his suit pants on the ice - that's how he made his living.

Boy if anyone has earned retirement its #4. I felt like more of a man because he played for my team. Many times all of us shacking our heads because he got in front of this shot or that shot. Thanks Nik !!!

i fact checked it and this is indeed today's fun fact o' the day.
it was purely a salary dump by chicago and one of pulford's better moves...

there's lots the blackhawks don't do well, but tribute videos isn't one of them. Oh man, watching that made me sad he's gone. It's brutal to think of the Hawk's D as is, when a guy like that was once on the second pairing.
He was never a big hitter, but it seemed like once a year (and only once) he would just LEVEL someone. Me and my wife would always woop it up after one of those. Campbell was kind of like that too.

I'm not sure what the stats would show but I recall Hammer upping his physical game in the postseason like most of Q's teams did and still do.
