Maybe athletes should stay out of politics. Maybe they should pick their battles wisely. However, if ever there was a time -- and the topic -- to speak up about, this is it. I hope there will be Russian players who will condemn the invasion, particularly since some of their teammates may be from Ukraine.

Hopefully this thread doesn't get political. Anyways...
Finnish ice hockey team Jokerit have quit the Russian-dominated Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Jokerit was set to face Spartak Moscow in the playoffs next week.

However, given the brutal nature of the invasion and the human toll that it'll take, I sure hope that high profile athletes, whose voices are heard, will speak up.

I am very impressed with Panarin! I swear that I've seen some players' birth city listed as Kyiv or Lviv. Maybe it was a long time ago. That's too bad about Ovechkin.

asked if he still supports putin, he just says "he's my president", that it's "a hard situation for both sides". both sides? doesn't denounce anything, not that i expected him to. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PutinTeam

I just watched a little of the Ovechkin press conference. Understandably, he's being very circumspect.

never realized it (not overly surprised either) but besides ukraine and russia, canada has the world's third highest population of ukrainians, almost all of which are in western canada. manitoba has the highest number with 15%.
ukrainian and canadian anthems sung before jet's game tonight in winnipeg.
and in cowtown...

www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/chl-decision-to-ban-russian-and-belarusian-players-from-draft-is-ill-conceived-theatre-5119114this tweet is from the article. keep in mind, this dan milstein is an agent who's clients are predominantly russians and belorusians so he may have some bias here. i do agree with him, though. banning these kids does nothing. and like it says in the article... Banning teenagers from the CHL import draft is just performative theatre. It does nothing to actually put pressure on Russia like other sanctions but instead punishes individual players, many of whom are eager to leave Russia and Belarus and come to Canada. In fact, removing an option for elite young hockey players to leave Russia is exactly what Putin and many of the oligarchs who own KHL teams have wanted for years. This move will force players to stay in Russia and play on KHL farm teams under Russian control.
i'm all for banning both countries from every men's/women's tournament imaginable but i don't get banning the kids who were about to be drafted. jmo.

I've always been against mixing politics/war with sport. This is what the athletes are training for their whole life. Why should they be responsible for the big boys' debilism? Especially when kids are involved. On the other hand, being told by the media what kind of bullshit is being presented in Russia, this is one of the few aspects that will get to ordinary people and will make them realize what their country is responsible for. Ukraine IMHO chose their direction. Sure, Russia does not like it, but there is no longer place in modern Europe for a strike like this.

I don’t wanna stick up for Russian aggression and I do not want anyone to think I do. My father in law is Ukrainian. So I’m in no way shape or form sticking up for that shithead posing as the Russian leader.
I will say this. How many times did Ovechkin say he’s hoping his family is safe? If he sewered Putin, he’d have his family put in jail or killed. Putin is obviously on tilt. Look how scared Panerin was last year when he called out Putin. He took two months off. Putin is a ruthless dictator.
So please, think of Ovi or any other Russian in the league. They can’t say anything about that dick cheese. Panerin as far as I know hasn’t said shit about him. It’s an awful situation and I fear that this is Putins swan song. There’s no telling what he’ll do!!!

The Russian players have to be careful of condemning the invasion. They have grown up in a country where the central government keeps power with fear and intimidation - something we have not (yet) experienced in the US and Canada. Perhaps the older players like Ovi and Malkin who have more life experience in and outside of Russia could up the ante a bit but they do have family who could be pressured. There aren't too many outspoken Russians or Chinese these days thanks to their brutal regimes. The NBA kisses China's butt - a story for another time and place.

I know Ovi had a pic of him with Putin. He’s Putins prized pig. He can’t just shun him and hope things work out. I’m not a fan at all what’s going on. A lot of great people are having their lives destroyed, unacceptable. But with how crazy that Czar seems these days, I don’t blame any of them for not saying anything!!!
