YES,using the N word derogatorily on the only black kid on the team on several occasions is racially targeting. If the music bothered Peters then he has to call a meeting and say to the entire team that such language is unacceptable.....end of story. Is the music more tolerable when white kids listen to it,which they do? there has to be a meeting before you can tell someone that N word in music at a workplace is inappropriate? Also, were there reports that the event happened multiple times? If so, then yes thats racially targeting. But reports so far says this is one incident. From what i read, this isnt even the first time Aliu have this kind of music playing. Youre not seriously saying Aliu did nothing inappropriate here? The story linked to right here on this hockey board said the captain Jake Dowel went to the coach to express his disapproval with Peters language and Peters repeating the same language in his subsequent meeting with Aliu. Are you seriously saying an adult coach couldn't have told a young, black player that the racial lyrics in his music were unacceptable without repeating those racial lyrics to his face? If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck......it's a duck my friend. www.sportingnews.com/us/nhl/news/akim-aliu-bill-peters-slur-investigation-calgary-flames/5q0aejfusuvm1ncwuf5bltqlawww.si.com/nhl/2019/11/27/nhl-discipline-bill-peters-abuse-accusations

Yes, he could have approached Aliu in a more appropriate way, but he's a bonehead and he will most likely pay for it and I have no issues with that.
I'm just saying, Aliu is not without fault here.
(different, but relevant subject) The timing of this is also sh1t from Aliu's part. Hes using that incident with Peters as an excuse that derailed his career. He even said himself that he started to rebel after that. Boo-hoo, "a bad racist man called my music "ni55a music" and that ruined my career. Its that man's fault. I had 20 goals in 20 games, I could have been a 4th line winger in Ottawa by now making hundreds of thousands of dollars, but instead im sitting here with no contract offers. Time to play the racial card for the event that happened 10 yrs ago"

neither of us were defending Bill Peters. What I am saying at least is that Aliu has some responsibilities with his actions too. Imagine if youre in management and one of your employees were listening to the music that Aliu claims he was listening to. Is it appropriate or inappropriate? Ive mentioned already, Bill handled the situation wrong because he is what he is. It doesn't mean that Aliu's action was right either. Just because Bill is wrong, doesn't mean Aliu was right.
Also, I am only speaking about the "music in locker room" incident. Anything else Bill did, its on him and to the other players he did it to.
^ was he being racially targeted though ?
If using the N word on the only black kid in the room isn't racially targeting then what is? A cross burning? A lynching? I'm not at all surprised how many immediately criticized Babcock for what he did but somehow want to put the blame on the player this time...….there's a reason for that. It's not like white kids are playing Christian music in locker rooms these days either, they seem to like the same stuff but then again they're not from Nigeria. Bob if you read Aliu’s quote. Peters did NOT direct a slur at Aliu. He said the N word in disgust of the music that had it in it. I also don’t think it’s appropriate to call people racist because you simply disagree with their take on things. Myself and Squishy did not say in any way shape or form that Peters was exonerated from his stupid comments. We’re just simply saying that Aliu had a hand in this too. If you knew the kids track record, you’d maybe think differently. I know this is a touchy subject for some, it seems it is for you too. That’s fine, I understand. I had the same type of thing happen with my buddy James. He would listen to that stuff and look at me weird if I was rapping along to it and waited for me to say the “N word” in the song. He was black (RIP James), I said to him one time, why put that on if it offends you? And he said that was a valid point and that should never come between us. It was cool to see someone you respect come to a reasonable conclusion. We were both kids then, in our early 20s. He’d listen to NWA and Wutang, he just stopped playing that around anyone, he was the furthest thing from a thug, and actually looked like Carlton from the Fresh Prince. Just because Peters is wrong, doesn’t mean Aliu isn’t either!!!

All Alliu did was play music in the locker room and you want to lay this at the black kid’s door. You guys like most white guys don’t see a problem with racist shit....I’m done here.

Difficult topic. Everything today is shone through a different lens from 10, 20, even 30 years ago. What Peters has allegedly said was horrible then and is horrible now. I know nothing about Peters, just what I’ve read in the last couple of days. But can people change? Does Peters today resemble the man from 10 years ago? Does Peters today still talk like this? Does he hold the same views? Maybe he does and he’s the POS everyone says he is. But then maybe he doesn’t feel and act the same today and he’s a changed man, maybe he’s learned and grown, maybe. People can and do. People who live in glass houses, ..or..”let he who is without sin cast the first stone...” etc. I’m doubting anyone alive would be completely exonerated if somehow a ghost from the past showed itself and demanded comeuppance. I know I’ve said things, maybe not even with malice, that I’d be embarrassed about today. But I wouldn’t do it today and not just because I’d be afraid of retribution, but because I’ve grown up. A lot. The court of public opinion isn’t a fair trial at all and Peters will likely be hung from a scaffold. Maybe once he’s completed his public penance even Aliu might forgive him.

as far as the music being played is concerned, if you don't think music of the same nature isn't being played in locker rooms all over Canada and the US right now, well I've got news for ya..... that his choice of music should even figure into the equation or story here is completely ridiculous and is only there for people to point at and say there was more than one person at fault when there absolutely was only one person at fault here.
Aliu is most certainly not some innocent lad, but in this situation his behavior outside of it has no bearing. what Peters did was wrong, end of discussion. that he may have changed since then is possible, but also has no bearing because what was done was done and no amount of change since that time can make it right. the toll must be paid, one that is apparently long since overdue.

The first thing I think needs to be addressed is why 10 years of silence. I think that's relatively easy Aliu is a was a gifted hockey player that wasted his talent being an immature jerk.I also believe that at some point he hopes to line his pockets.
Now the center of the story. Peters is a bully and a racist. He himself at the time was not twenty years old and even if he were just repeating lyrics as stated one would have to examine his motive as I don't think it was his kind of music (maybe it was). I still believe it was directed at Aliu. The skirmishes in Carolina were just as unacceptable as the dumb ass could have injured his own players and it shows his willingness to injure his own players in more than one fashion.
I don't believe any organization should be held responsible here. It was Peters and Peters alone who brought this upon himself. He will pay with never coaching in the NHL or any other North American league again. That should be enough satisfaction for Aliu I'm certain he isn't totally an innocent in the story his character in the past dictates my belief.
So the incident in my honest opinion was racist. That's however where it should start and end. We all need to pay for our indiscretions here in the snowflake era. Peters will pay for his actions (never coaching again) and that alone should be Alui's pound of flesh.

Has everyone had their say about this and other stories of other coaches now coming out?
I will close this thread after Friday since our main purpose is the Hawks and bashing SB. So let's keep it civil boys and girls.

So let's keep it civil boys and girls. Fair enough. For what it was worth it seemed civil enough. But it was hockey talk and now every indiscretion of the last 30 years will come out and there will be calls from media, the hockey industry and non stakeholders to destroy the "toxic" hockey culture. Don Cherry was the start, who knows where it ends. In the end you'll probably have a more modern and progressive system but it is going to be a painful transition, especially for traditionalists.

I grew up around black people and racism was never really a problem. Actually, from what I’ve witnessed, it’s never really been a horrible problem in Canada. I’m sure there’s still people and instances that have their stupidity. I hope that we don’t have to have these conversations anymore, it really is redundant these days!!!

I'll reserve my comments on the Aliu portion of this matter, and focus on the other aspect.
I truly hope no one here believes it's appropriate for a sports coach in any sport at any level to punch or kick their players. That's not millenial coddling, or pacifiers and cribs, it's utterly ridiculous and out of control.

That goes back to the 70's with the Ohio State football coach, Woody Hayes, when he punched an opposing player that was near his bench after a tackle.

I think things may turn for the worse in Seattle before they even get started. It looks like Francis was the cover for Peters there. I found it very weird that Brind’Amour threw both Peters and Francis under the bus. He just came out and said it. No one had to coax an answer out of him. He even commended the management there for getting rid of both. I think it’s good we get guys like that out of the game. From what I’ve heard, Glen Gulitzan and Mike Yeo are in the same conversation when it comes to coaches being drill Sargents and hard to play for!!!

And maybe that’s why they’re crazy? But Car Bomb is a nick name for a reason. I also know many don’t want to accept “that’s just the way it was back then”, but that’s just the reality. People used to smoke in hospitals while someone was dying of cancer, I don’t agree with it, but it’s the way it was. There used to be actual fighters that many here would clamour over and they still want this run em out of the rink style hockey, but that results in a ton of concussions and injuries. One day that type of hockey will be totally frowned upon and if you like that type you’re a Buffoon and some type of racist. Everything is perspective. We must realize that and better ourselves for living with that!!!

Dawes had a pretty good run there, but I don’t see any overlap between the two in their respective careers. Dawes is getting up there in age, maybe it was just contractual.
