Both goalies go three straight periods without allowing a goal, a shutout each within the game.

Both goalies go three straight periods without allowing a goal, a shutout each within the game. New rule: in 4th OT both teams play with 6 skaters and no goalies

Could you imagine how much longer this game would already be if they had commercial breaks the periods sure fly by though, eh?

that was definitely normally a penalty but not sure it's one in a 4th o/t period.

Not saying this game is long, but Connor Bedard just announced his retirement after a stellar 18 year career

Carolina had not lost a playoff game when scoring 1st, and were undefeated in OT. Not anymore

I knew as soon as Albert's said something about there only ever being 5 5OT games in league history, that someone was about to score...
not gonna lie, I was kinda mad. I wanted to see a fifth.

It would have been a 2-1 Panther victory in regulation, if Bennett were not such a Neanderthal.

It would be interesting to know how many people, especially Carolina fans, turned off the game after Lomberg appeared to score the gwg early in the first OT

Wondering if one or both teams switch goalies next game due to the length of game 1?

I do not see how you take Bob and even Anderson, will be surprised if they both do not start.

I know there are stories out there particularly on warm days where goalies lose 10-15 lbs. during a game and not even talking about another game and one period of overtime. Panger might have weighed 100 lbs. on one of those nights.

Maybe they should try something different. Maybe 5 on 5 for the first OT, 4 on 4 for the 2nd OT. If needed 3 on 3 for the 3rd ot. I do enjoy the game, and how hickey is a war of attrition. But I feel OT games like that can crush a teams playoffs. Playing 2 consecutive games can lead to massive burnout. Getting them done earlier would be the way to go!!!

I don't know, since both teams are in the same boat, especially since it was game 1, they'll have time to recuperate, especially if this turns out to be a shorter series then the Western Conference finals. Yes, it's exhausting, even for fans, but I don't think I'd want it any other way.

Getting them done earlier would be the way to go!!! just 55 playoff games have exceeded 2 overtime periods since the league began. since the year 2000 it's happened 26 times, so for whatever reason it's happening at a faster rate. in 2003, it happened in 5 different series. only 2 teams (bolts and wings) had it happen twice to them that year and both times for both teams, it was in a different series. myself personally, i'd say leave it the way it is. it doesn't happen enough even since 2000 to affect anything. and the way the sport is changing, it's nice to hang onto some of the old ways.
