Nice win by the Sharks last night to leave the hapless Hawks all by their lonesomes in the basement. I hope they stay there and get more important steps in the endless rebuild accomplished before actually becoming a real NHL team, or not.

For me, even if a dead last finish does not guarantee the #1 pick, they might as well max out their chances for getting it; or who knows, maybe even the #2 or #3 pick might get them what they need also. Unfortunately, they are still a long ways away from being competitive. But, perhaps with enough money thrown at some decent vets they might persuade enough to come here to play with a bunch of unproven draftees. I suspect that most NHL players care more about making as much money as they can and piss on getting their name etched on the Cup.

As it stands, the Hawks will have no worse than 3rd in the draft.

Like you,I wouldn't have expected a lot more with a healthy Hall,Perry and AA all year but they certainly woulda helped, and losing Bedard made it ugly.....real ugly! It's hard to criticize for those reasons and I haven't. The rebuild better not be F'n endless with the massive 'jump-start' it's had but Bedard's return will buy time, and I think the fan-base's expectations will stay reasonable. Progress will and should be expected too though. If I did have a nit to pick,I don't get bringing in a vet D-man and not looking to move Zaitsev by now so two more young D-men couldda got more needed minutes. Zaitsev's only started 26 of the team's 50 games and I believe most of the other 24 were healthy scratches, with all the injuries on the blue-line. With this year's expectations,I start him every night he's good to go just to 'show-case' the guy and maybe a little 2nd unit PP time to up his trade value, sitting this veteran half the starts so far only tells the rest of the league he's no longer good enough to make a last place line-up. At least we had another chance to thoroughly assess and develop 31yro Tinordi. We're gettin' a good look at 31yro Megna too......for some reason. Why not feed Soder a bunch of starts for assessment and development too(because we can)........busy assessing and developing a 31yro there too? I do think Vlasic and KK have been handled well though and both are VERY promising! Let's see what time-line we end up with on the rebuild, does another massive draft haul this summer mean the team can pivot to adding some higher quality talent soon thereafter?

I like your idea of a few more starts for Soder, although there is a chance we ruin him, and his confidence is lost. Hard to evaluate him with the current team basically scoring less than 2 goals per game and lucky to get one on most nights. He basically has to be perfect to get a win and winning helps with confidence. I know we have others in the system that may surpass him. Hoping to see less of Tinordi, Megna and Zaitsev being honest. I know Luke wants to instill a hard-working work ethic and hold players accountable, but this year should be about development.

I agree with all you say. The answer to your last question is that yes, the pivot must begin as soon as the 2024 draft has been completed. Then, the first task will be to figure out who will be their foundational blocks from the draftees. Only after that has been completed will they be able to start dealing away those they believe will not be the blocks. Then, they can acquire proven vets. Altho, they might get a few of those proven guys before they are absolutely certain of which draftees they want to be around long term. However, I do think that sorting out the draftees into the keepers and the expendables should be the first task to be completed.

I don't see any signings that are meant to help the team make a playoff push happening until 2025, at the earliest.

Actually, they might need to sign a few vets to meet the minimum salary level. They might get an added bonus of getting those vets out there where they can start to gel with the youngsters. But, as you say, expect another year of development and evaluation, not a year of suddenly challenging for the Cup.

Even a slightly less patient fan like myself sees another two years of development and assessment as necessary before challenging for a PO spot, let alone a Cup. Two more years of proper development and assessment should let us know what we have from the new FO's first 2 drafts other than Bedard and KK,from prior drafts and maybe the next one too if there's a game changer in it. If these three drafts and a few 'left-overs' like Vlasic and Dach...ect....ect from prior drafts result in 4-6 quality, young players besides Bedard,KK and Vlasic......the rebuild will be WELL under way IMO. More kids on cheap ELC's can be added in roles suited for em as the team goes along after that too if the right players were picked, developed and assessed. If not? I don't really think there's a way we DON'T see a number of good-very good, young players from this loaded system, the qustion is always,to what level do these good-very-good ,young players rise to as a team once assembled? I do continue to contend the team does not have to continue being a bottom-five team to properly develop and assess young players though and I see a big advantage to giving talented, young players a more competitive atmosphere sooner rater than later.
