Koekkoek will never be a star.
But he has improved enormously over the past couple of months and seems to be getting comfortable and making far fewer mistakes.
I see a warrior type who plays physical, blocks shots and comes to play every night. I would re-sign him for next year and beyond. He will continue to get better and will eventually be a top four guy in this league.

He’s had a string of good games here, but I wouldn’t get too high on him yet. I doubt he’ll ever be a legitimate #4 dman. I think what we’re seeing is a kid drafted high, who is finally realizing that he’s not a top player and he’s gotta play tough minutes to stay in the lineup. I hope he keeps getting better, but we’ve heard this tune before and I’d be very cautious with a new contract. Sign him to a one year deal max. Give a guy like that a financial security blanket, and he probably regresses!!!

His history doesn’t show anything to warrant a huge compensation so he should be very reasonable to extend. And you’re right about his game improving. More ice time and more responsibilities equal better results.

The ability to play both sides is a boon for team and player.

As a comparable for Slater, I see Brent Sopel, which to me is a very good thing. He can kill penalties, help some on the offence, perhaps become an effective secondary shut down guy. He is not pretty or flashy, but he is getting the job done.
If I am Bowman, I offer him a three yea deal at $1.5-1.75 M/year.

I wouldnt go any higher than 900k and longer than 2 years. There are at least 5 other dmen next year that is going to be added to the mix (Mitchell, Beaudin, Gilbert, Seabs, DeHaan). save that capspace somewhere else.

First of all, there is no such thing as silent K's in Dutch. It ought to be pronounced KEK-ick, but he prefers KOOkoo. To me, that's just Koo Koo! Kidding aside, and 5-game losing streak aside, I do have Top 4 hopes for this guy however kookoo it is!
