ya i figure thats a good way to get the wife her 1st musky as well, its similar to what we do in the spring down in florida. we drag giant shiners around for huge largemouth.. shes a little concerned about the size of the fish though.. and thats what i do, ill put out a sucker and cast, and yep, a couple of times i had a follow and the sucker went off right after.. i was on webster lake a few weeks ago doing just that, and i tried a couple of smaller indiana lakes for the first time as well, Loon and upper long. tiny lakes. had a good follow at loon, then i went to upper long around noon, basically to just check it out, and i popped a 37" 15 minutes into fishing! go figure. so were going to go back there and try, and theres another little lake nearby we may try as well. upper long is only 88 acres! crazy. and they may have, i really have no idea where we were, i was just looking at the map, and i cant remember where we launched.. we def fished the canadian side once last year around this time.. caught one dink. wasnt crazy with our guide, we threw the same 2 baits the whole time... and who is musky Bob? im not familiar with him.. heres the little guy i got on that pond last week... those are some little lakes! hope you guys have some good luck there. yeah, that would get old pretty quick. gotta switch things up after a bit... what were ya throwing? when I used to fish LSC there were 3 main lures I liked to use. Dawgs work well, imo. I've read articles recently (while trying to find some about ole Bob) saying that they work because most everyone is trolling with straight line lures out there, so something that gives more of a variety can get em enticed to bite. I would agree, as i caught a few out there on them. of course, they are heavy as hell....lol. second and third on the list are both care of ole Bob.... first is a 1 oz gold Red-eye. more than likely you will get scoffed at most any other place if you produce one of these, but I swear to ya, they work, especially on LSC. my dad busted one out on our first trip up to Eagle and the guide laughed and was like "ok". we had been seeing some but no takers. he landed about 45 incher on his first cast.... which was funny but also kinda sucked cuz the guide's ego must've been hurt cuz he was kinda of a prick the rest of the day.... that was the first and last time we went out with him. anyway.... last but not least, my favorite lure to use on LSC, specifically Anchor Bay, is the Brunner Runner. these are probably hard to find nowadays (a quick Google search had 1 result). if you head to LSC again, I would ask whomever you go out with about them and if there is an equivalent being made in the area (I'm sure someone is replicating it). i would post a picture of one, but all of my gear is at my folks place, so..... here are the best articles I could find about Bob. he was an old-school guy, didn't advertise. he wrote a bunch of books, a couple of which I wish I had copies of. he was a character, but a really good guy once ya got to know him. he passed away a couple years ago after fishing for 'skis on LSC into his 90s. they started a tournament in his honor in 2019. 1source.basspro.com/news-tips/muskie/4788/muskie-bobwww.google.com/amp/s/daverichey1.wordpress.com/2011/08/10/a-living-muskie-legend-bob-brunner/amp/ya they are, and about 2 hours east of here, but i liked what i saw.. they werent getting pounded! and funny thing, when i launched at upper long, there were guys there waiting for a load of muskies to be stocked that day! crazy coincidence.. we threw mostly bull dawgs and medussas that trip, the guide smoked like a motha too, that sucked.. and sometimes the oldies are the goodies man.. seems you can catch em on almost anything now.. welp, i have to head home from work, shhhh, dont tell the boss about this thread!

I've heard great things about Kevin and will use him myself in the future since Brian Jones no longer guides in the area. Brian worked hard for me and I was never 'on the clock' with him,it was usually up to me to cry uncle. The only thing better than a follow hittin' on a figure eight is when the one you DON'T see explodes from under the boat......wet my knickers the first time it happened. A lotta trollers use rod holders and I guess that's easier but I love the feeling of a hit when holing the rod myself,it's also easier to tell when you're fouled. yup, i went out with him probably the 1st or 2nd year he started guiding, seems to have them pretty dialed in now.. even though it isnt like it was in the early to mid 2000s, its still good.. i had that happen on our trip up there! not familiar with that lake so i had the boat over a nice cabbage bed and one came outta nowhere from under the boat and scared the bejesus outta me! had more than a few show up right when i was pulling the bait out of the water as well.. dummy! this conversation is giving me the itch! wish i was going this weekend now!!!! once in Eagle, I was burning a bucktail and as it got fairly close to the boat my dad is like "o you got a good one after it!" for whatever reason, I never got my eye on it... anyway, I bring the 'tail all the way in and start 8ing and I do a full 8 and am halfway through the second and BAM, this bitch comes right out from under the boat (guide and dad both claimed it was over 50 easily), i hold on and she jumps outta the water and throws the damn 'tail right at me (well, obviously the tension of me holding on and then the tension being gone was more the cause than her actually chucking it at me, lol) I ducked. had I not, it would've hit me right in the face.... i was bummed, but what can ya do.....

any of you cats ever fish thru the ice? Tried it once.......TOO DAM COLD! Sittin inside a shanty, staring at the same wall for hours is awful compared to sittin in a boat lookin at beautiful scenery.

Sittin inside a shanty, staring at the same wall for hours is awful compared to sittin in a boat lookin at beautiful scenery. agree on the scenery, but ice fishing is fun when they are on. dragging in a nice northern by hand is fun times....until they get to the hole and don't wanna come through! we used to go for 'gills a couple times every winter when I was a young lad... well, I should say, I went for 'gills and my dad and uncles went for the beer. 😅 once I had half a 5 gallon bucket full that were "bigger than your hand", it was time to go! we would usually try for perch a time or two each winter as well, usually with varying success. smelt on occasion. but it was the tip ups that I liked the best. I would say those, plus spending summers chasing the toothy critters up in da UP from age 7 is what got me where I am today. I like fishing for most anything, but muskies and northerns are far and away my favorite.

This thread name needs to be changed to Babe Winkelman We could all be 'Babe' if we were given a week to fish the same lake and then condense that week down to 20 minutes of tape!

are bass any good to eat? i bet close to 95% of the fishing shows i've watched out of the u.s. over the years feature bass but i've never ever seen them cook one up. what's the appeal with bass? it must be the fight i presume but even the big ones caught on tv seem to come in pretty easy. never caught one so no idea.

we used to eat em back when I was a kid, probably cuz i wanted to keep em and my dad said f it and fried em up. they usually ended up in a meal with a half a bucket of bluegills. since I've been an adult, I don't recall ever eating one. I don't remember them tasting that bad, but I've never had the inclination to eat one since I was a kid. imo, bass are fun to catch and release, kinda like ski's or big northerns (gimme a 27-32" northern all day long to eat, though).

but we enjoy fishing with big ol' shiner minnows down in florida to try to catch 10 pound plus bass, my goal is a 13 pounder.. 11.1 is the biggest so far.. dammit..

yeah, I am also a big pike fan. a lot of people are dissuaded by the bones, but ya just gotta clean em right and ya can't bother with any hammer handles. thus the 27-32 range, generally they have a good hunk of meat on em in that range. I love me some walleye too, but if I had to choose, I'd pick pike. I'm getting hungry now!

The only way we can tell the difference between the Pike,Walleyes,Perch or Crappies at shore dinner after a trip through the grease is by the size/shape of the filet to be honest but we've been through the grease ourselves at that point too!LOL! We used to find limits of Jumbos on Big Winnie several years ago and the bite was back last year,if we fill the live well with Perch and/or Walleyes by noon,we go to the east side and pull big baits around........it's still the home of the state record Musky. At 58,000 acres,it doesn't take much over a 10MPH wind to blow us off the big lake(depending on direction) and it can be the dead sea at times too but there's so much other water to fish in those instances. First year with the new camper so I'm gonna get up there 4-5 times a year from here on out. The wind was a blowin out of the SW our first day out last year, two of our guides thought better of it and went to a smaller lake but our guy and another said the Perch bite was on and the 10 mile ride across wouldn't be that bad. The bite WAS on alright but the ride out was F'n brutal......I told my guide I'd beat the crap out of him if he ever did that to me again but I got over it when he busted out a 12yro bottle of Kentucky's finest.

I've caught a few pigs in Fla too dave, where were ya? They say the St Johns river system might still hold a 20 pounder with the year round forage. Don't fish for em much any more but when I did,I got tired of tryin' the stuff the guys on TV did(texas rigs and wacky worms)and I just dropped a lively 'golden roach' or shinner under a bobber......no better way!

couple reasons I could think of off the top of my head: they need to reach the cap floor and he isn't terribly expensive when you have a blank slate. also, he is in the last year of his deal, so he could be flipped at the deadline for more assets or he plays there the whole year and then is off the books come summer of '22. Well,if you put it that way...LOL! I got a lotta drinky poos in me up at the camper up in beautiful Dear River MN so I’m not in an arguing mood! Northwoods and enables my friends! Bob, is that a typo and you meant to say "Beer" River?
Hope the fish are biting and the flies stay away. I have to get out and do some shore fishing on the Missouri River soon. My son is coming up from AZ in July and we'd really like to have some fish already in the freezer before he gets here. We plan on going on a guided fish outing either on the River, Lake Sakakawea, or Devils Lake. It depends on the fish bite and the wind. I don't like to get tossed around on big water, I've done that before a few times.
