Wondering....anyone ever come across asian carp yet? I don't know much about about them other than watching them hit boaters in the head on YT. I read they're supposed to be good eating (besides the bones). If it was me i'd dig out the pressure canner and can a few pints/quarts. Old folks i knew many years ago would can sucker (with a bit of ketchup)...it was delicious believe it or not, and any and all bones turn soft. Also read that asian carp are very low in mercury because they only eat plants.
Anyways...just wondering if anyone tried.

The Asian carp destroy the eco-system of native river fish, trout, bass, etc. Plants are where the native fish live. Destroy that and the native fish disappear.

I know enough about the history, just wondering if anyone had ever tried eating asian carp. Rarely anything good happens when a new species is introduced somewhere it doesn't belong...whether intentionally or by accident. Besides asian carp, pythons and snakehead fish in florida, zebra mussels in the great lakes, cane toads in australia to name a few that come to mind but there's likely hundreds of instances.

I was out on a booze cruise with friends on the Illinois river about ten years ago and I saw a few dozen jump in front of the pontoon but I think there's a lot more of em now. As far as eatin' em,I have better options than bottom feeders but some cultures love carp.

6 bucks a pound still seems pricey for something that will literally jump in your boat. Cleaning fees i guess.

Carp is just another name for CRAP. Changing the name to help sell the product seems to work. Would you rather order orange roughy in a nice restaurant? Or a slimehead? Same fish actually...just renamed to make it marketable. Somewhat unrelated but i worked with a newfy who said his grandfather would bury lobster shells in the backyard instead of putting them in the trash for the neighbors to see because only poor folk ate lobster. The same guy said you could tell the poor kids in school because they ate lobster sandwiches. Anyhoo...google tells me asian carp aren't bottom feeders like most carp. Tbh, the thought of eating a bottom feeding fish doesn't really bother me that much.

And most of the time it's an Italian fish salad with octypus, squid and such.

And most of the time it's an Italian fish salad with octypus, squid and such. most of my fishing back home was trout on a flyrod. if it was hooked in the eye or gill i'd wrap it in tin foil and chuck it on the fire. other than that it went back in. pike, perch, walleye were a different story. i could eat it most every day. we got a pond by our restaurant. when we bought the land, we got a digger in and made it a bit bigger and deeper. stocked it with 2000 fish (4 types) and already at least 2 kinds of fish in it previously so 6 kinds of fish total. just bait and a bobber so not exactly what i'd call sportfishing. my buddy brought half a dozen len thompson spoons from home so gonna give them a try but i don't know if they'll work here. edit: we stocked with tilapia, red tilapia, pangasius and pacu. previously there were snakehead and silver barb. if you've ever watched the show "river monsters", you might recall the episode when the host (jeremy wade) goes in search of the pacu fish because apparently there was a myth they bit and ate the balls of men swimming. mine might approach the size of this fish in the video but no bigger. great fighter and the teeth are everything as advertised. they honestly look like a mini set of human dentures.

I've seen the Wade show numerous times, as the special lady loves that show for some reason. those pacu are some odd looking things..

I've seen the Wade show numerous times, as the special lady loves that show for some reason. those pacu are some odd looking things.. not that i've caught a huge variety of freshwater fish, but pound for pound the pacu is tops in my book. i likely land between a third and a quarter of the ones i hook. for obvious reasons a wire leader is preferred and i don't have any. i have yet to eat one but they're supposed to decent eating. and no bloody way i'd put my fingers that close to a pacu's mouth like mr. wade did. there's a clear, audible "snap" when they close their jaws quick like that. i can only imagine what would be left of a finger if you were foolish enough to get bit. edit: looking at that video again, my biggest would still be a 2 or 3 of pounds shy of the one shown.

Oh man, me and my wife fed the tarpon just like that in the Keys several years ago. We didn't stick our hand in the water and tease them like that though. Those people on the dock weren't giving that guy much help.

ahh...the popeil pocket fisherman. is that yours in the photo by chance? when i was a kid i really wanted one of those. of course, that was long before the days when i wasn't a skeptic of things that looked too good to be true. old ron popeil had a lot of stuff like that but he was a pretty good salesman. hell, i bought a "popeil pasta maker" one night at about 3 a.m. and i don't even eat much pasta. seemed like a good idea at the time. it got used exactly once.
