Think we need a thread here about the city itself. Questions, answers, comments, likes, dislikes...whatever. I just seen this on twitter. Like every big city there's a food scene that seems to be unique from other cities. And other cities would say the same.

I got a question.
Is there a nice beach on lake michigan there in the city? Is it clean? Lots of anglers here but nobody here seems to fish lake michigan. Someone said the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
Anyways...enough questions for now.

Living in Chicago the first 55 years of my life, I had no idea what a food paradise it was. In the early 2000's, I was playing a baseball tournament in Fort Meyers Beach Florida. A group of my teammates and I went to a small fast food style Italian restaurant. I didn't even bother to look at the menu board, I knew exactly what I wanted. When it was my turn to order, I said I wanted an Italian Beef. They had no idea what I was talking about. Now living in Florida the last 6 years, I was pizza deprived (horrible pizza here), Burrito deprived, and Italian Beef deprived. Fortunately a few years ago a really good pizza place opened less then a mile from me, found a Mexican restaurant who makes really good burritos, and a Portillos opened up in Orlando (an hour drive but better then their previous closest location in Tampa, 2 hours away) for my Italian Beef.
Those were the 3 major things I was missing most from Chicago.

I still meet a few old buds for lunch at Manny's once a year, long drive for me but it is OUTSTANDING!

Did a few Salmon/Trout charters out of Winthrop Harbor and Kenosha with a group and it's okay, just reel em in when it's your turn.

I’m sorry to hear about the terrible shooting in Chicagoland today. That’s absolutely insanity to see what humans are doing to each other.
I hope the fine people of Highland Park can find some sort of peace in all of this.
Isn’t Highland Park a nice area? I believe I drove through there before on a detour to Okonomowac Wisconsin and the place seemed nice.
Rip to the 6 unfortunate folk who got shot down. Just a horrible tragedy that could have been avoided!!!

What about winter? How far (if any) does the ice freeze from shore in an average year. Is the lake pretty clean? I know lake erie used to be quite bad for pollution. Is it a healthy fishery? I saw the north side of superior maybe 50 years back but besides that have zero experience with the great lakes.

I saw the north side of superior maybe 50 years back but besides that have zero experience with the great lakes. There are others on this board who are more knowledgeable than I am about what you have asked but here’s my 2 cents: Here at the southern end of the lake, ice can extend a mile or two (I’ve seen it from the air) after a significant cold snap. But walking out on it is extremely dangerous so IMO there is no ice fishing below the Wisconsin/Illinois border. I cannot speak to farther north. My impression is there is not a large commercial fishing effort on Lake Michigan but there is some and restaurants often offer whitefish although it is sometimes termed “Lake Superior” whitefish so is presumably truly from there. The lake is fairly clean although there are days in the summer when the coliform bacteria count can become elevated and swimming curtailed. I think this is actually less common than it used to be as there is better sewage treatment and storm water runoff is handled more effectively than is used to be.

Due to the violent wind and wave action, the only Lk Michigan ice fishing in the Chicago area I'm aware of has been in the protected harbors. There have been some problems as you mentioned during the hottest spells but as a rule, the lake is a top notch salmon and trout fishery and over 10 million people get their drinking water from it.

Any disagreements? I’ll admit up here I didn’t follow all these teams all these years like a Chicago native might have. But how about Seabrook over Kukoc?

I think Glenn Hall should be in over Rose.

Debrincat vs Hinrich? Minoso over Hull?

Debrincat vs Hinrich? Minoso over Hull? I would've been ok with either for 12. I'm sure Hull's personal issues are the reason he isn't on the list...

I spent many a night watching both Blackhawks hockey and an occasional Bulls game at Chicago Stadium. My aunt had her season tickets at the stadium (front row of the 1st balcony directly behind where the Hawks shot twice), and my avatar of Mikita includes the ticket stub from the game against the Russians played on January 7th, 1976 that she took me to (ticket price.....$8.50). She started taking me to games in the late 1960's with the likes of Mikita, Bobby and Dennis Hull (part of the MPH line with Martin and Pappin), White and Stapleton, Pilote, King Kong Korab, Tony O with Gary Smith as his backup. I also had season tickets there for 1 year during the Orval Tessier heart transplant year of 1982/83. The noise was deafening, and the smoke filled stadium was an atmosphere I could never tolerate today. I said when they decided to tear it down, they should have left it up for the circus, ice show, and the Hawks minor league team. But unfortunately it was torn down. That was a very sad day.

I’m a fan of this foiling catamaran racing. When Chicago hosted their event it was the stunning skyline in the background, that pier jutting out by the finish line, the waters of the lake, just a stunning venue. In my younger days I rode through Chicago a couple of times but never lingered, always on the way to somewhere else. But I’d love to be on that lake some day just to get that view from the water.

Left Chicago and Cook County the end of October for Adairsville Ga. No regrets and will never look back. I'll keep my memories from when it was an amazing city and the great times I had with friends and family. Don't miss the food because I am a pretty damn good cook. The city council was introduced to myself the wife and Italian Beef sandwiches only problem down here is the bread too soft and falls apart too easily. I'll have to have Turano send some.

Is Mohawk carpet somewhere near there? I called on them in my former life with some colleagues from our Atlanta office.
