At one point during my STH days the Hawks did have tribes perform between periods. I don't recall what happened, but there was a rift between the Hawks and tribes that ended that partnership. Anyone remember this, and what happened?

View AttachmentHe should be hired immeeeeeeeeeeeediately to be a shirtless ambassador. That’s some serious dedication right thur!!!

i reckon it's a very good start. hopefully, more "common ground" can be found and agreements/handshakes will be a result.

We acknowledge that the land we built a massive family fortune on rightfully belongs to you poor bastards,well........then give it back!LOL! countless hundreds of thousands over many generations have built fortunes on native lands around chicago i'd imagine. idk...at least the organization is trying to make amends although i'd say it will never be enough but at least it's something.

I'll back off on this issue but I struggle to see how just acknowledging this tragic episode helps the plight of Native Americans.

no change in the team's policy with the new upper management in place. no big surprise i guess.
“We respect the decision the Cleveland Indians made to go down that path, but we continue to deepen our commitment to upholding our namesake and our brand,” Wirtz said. “The work we’ve been doing over the last several months, and expanding and deepening conversations and partnerships within the Native community, we continue to feel really positive about the types of work we can do, the way in which we can be better stewards of the namesake and the history, and to use our platforms to be educators not only for our fans but for our internal teams and making sure that we provide that reverence and respect that we talk about.”

Currently I've heard the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, and Hawks are the 3 remaining pro sports teams that have names that could be considered offensive.

i'm sure you know the portland winterhawks of the WHL changed their logo to this. anyways...i like the winterhawk's choice. i think the blackhawks are last to change. they seem pretty dug in about it.

If the Black Hawks change their logo I'm done with them and hockey all together. Why? Because then they are not the Black Hawks any longer.

Because then they are not the Black Hawks any longer. Not going to bag on you, although I don't understand the choice to walk away if the Hawks changed to actual black Hawks like some of the concepts I've seen floated.

Because then they are not the Black Hawks any longer. but they will be the same team, same players, same history. the former logo and name will just be part of that history. does it really matter what they are called? they are still Chicago's hockey team, that's honestly all I care about. that being said, I think it'll be awhile before any change is made. the brass seem to be pretty dug in on this issue.

i wonder....if the blackhawks just changed their logo but kept the name would that be enough? i would think so but like i've said before....i'm not sure i've really got my finger on the pulse of this situation..

I can’t see anything offensive about the name. Once the imagery is removed and you follow the trail from where that name comes from, it becomes a team basically named after one man. Not a bad homage. But will every piece of clothing or memorabilia I own now become as controversial as flying a confederate flag? Wear my 2010 Stanley Cup ball cap and I’ll be open for attack and censored? You know I live near Edmonton, go to a game here and the natives who attend and are Hawk fans seem to have no issues with wearing the colours.

It was an interesting read and more relevant today than ever! The Chief was considered a 'demon in human shape' by those who slaughtered his people and then paraded him through eastern cities in a fucking cage after his capture.......now that's reverence! I haven't worn a single piece of Black Hawk attire after reading the actual, factual accounts of the massacre you posted about a year ago but I have NO problem if someone else does.....this is a personal perspective.

I’ll be damned - in my 50+ years, I had never really studied this nation’s 7th President, Andrew Jackson. Visited his Hermitage (https://thehermitage.com/) estate 2 days ago, knew he was a slaveholder but did not know so much about his Native American policies. He came into office in 1829, and the 1831-1832 reporting from this story fits into one helluva more recognizable context now. The man, Jackson, and his times…

History The National Hockey League (NHL)'s Chicago Blackhawks was named in honor of the U.S. 86th Infantry Division, which was nicknamed the "Blackhawk Division" after Black Hawk, a Native American chief; the team's founder, Frederic McLaughlin, having served in that division.

I don’t like chiming in on these things very often due to people’s feelings are too involved. But that is correct and the Chicago BlackHawks are in no way shape or form set up to be racist. It’s an honour to have something named after you. Here in Canada, a lot of Residential Schools have had their terrible pasts brought out. A lot of indigenous children died from Tuberculosis. Like thousands. There are even cases of a lot of kids dying from neglect. It’s awful. Seeing children suffer is wrong. We all know this. This is Canada’s history. Like it or not. But making teams get rid of names isn’t going to change a thing. If the name is clearly racist against anyone, I think it should be abolished. I think a name and logo like the Blackhawks is a good thing. It helps celebrate the accomplishments of great people. If Chief BlackHawks family or descendants wanted it abolished, then they should grant the family their wishes. We can’t change history, but we sure as hell better learn from it. I for one hope the Hawks keep their name and logo. It’s not racist. And no one is saying the atrocities against the said people are justified, or in any way acceptable. We just want to celebrate a great leaders life by using his portrait and name!!!
