Well well well, MERPER has returned.
Thank you to Phill and Big-T for reaching out to me this week and urging me to make a comeback. It's nice to se some familiar names around here. Also thanks to T-Man for making/operating these forums and making it so professional.
Truth be told, I had really cut back on posting at the old "official" forums before the lights went out for good which is part of the reason I didn't make the move over initially.
Plus, I was always trending negative even towards the best of times so with them hitting such a bad patch over recent seasons and Stan Bowman (whom many of you know I really hate) not only remaining on the job but staying on past Q and McCub I've been pretty turned off from Blackhawks hockey for a bit. I watch all games still cause I am a glutton for punishment (and I love watching kaner) but it's tough to watch. Sad to see the older guys, our heroes, struggle with age like Duncs and Seabs. And while I like some of what I see from DeBrincat and Dach, the cupboard is pretty bare. Hopefully some of the young d-men arrive and make an instant impact soon. (BTW, Colliton is awful lol).
Anyway, figured for my first post/thread I'd include a poll to get a sense of where people are on the NHL returning to play amid the pandemic. Personally, I think it's really stupid and I will be crossing my fingers and hoping no players get infected or suffer if they do.
Hope you all are staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.
Brighter days ahead both for Blackhawks hockey and all of our health and well being (I hope).
Cheers!

First off. Awesome to have you back. It’s been too long without ya.
Next, I’m not a fan of the return to play. I’ve stated many times how I think it’s gonna be a total waste of a team in the conference finals gets like 5-6 infections and they have to play farm hands. The league will look like an utter joke at that point. The Pens held out 9 players due to a possible infection. How the hell do you hand out a Cup when it’s clearly tainted? I think it’s just a terrible money grab. Take the summer off and regroup for next season!!!

Imagine the Lakers and Bucks make the NBA Finals and LeBron and/or Giannis gets the virus and has to miss all or most of the series. A 60-game MLB season? What good is that? Fun of baseball is the marathon of 162 games. A Cy Young winner with 5 wins? LOL If this country was doing better handling the pandemic I'd say sure, go for it. But we're a dumpster fire and, quite frankly, as Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle said last week... we don't deserve sports right now. (Canada on the other hand, does).

I am certainly in the camp of not having a Stanley Cup tournament, the players health and safety are being put in harms way for the financial well being of the league. Even with zero attendance the league still stands to profit just through tv ratings and sponsors alone.

Any player can opt out, for any reason, but will they? Peer pressure, combined with shame and their desire to compete will force nearly all players to opt in. I’m with BigT that it seems just like a money grab and it’s sad that some of these guys will be put on the spot. That said, they’re grown men and will make their own decisions. I’m just having a hard time getting interested. No matter who wins I think I’ll treat it like that lost season of Dallas, where Bobby is in the shower, it never happened.

Even with zero attendance the league still stands to profit just through tv ratings and sponsors alone. You have to figure that TV ratings will skyrocket simply because nobody can go out and the lack of sports for the past several months. What will be interesting is who will win in a ratings battle when all the leagues are coming back about the same time....hockey, basketball, baseball, and shortly after football.
I'm in the opinion no leagues should be playing. Every day we read of another bunch of athletes testing positive. And I just don't get the secrecy by not telling who is testing positive. It's not like a drug problem or an injury an opponent can take advantage of. I understand it's up to the players first and foremost, but for the NHL to refuse to divulge any information is stupid. Right now nobody knows what's up with Corey Crawford and it would make so much more sense to just let the players make the decision if they are testing positive.
Other issues will be having players in game conditions. That, along with the virus, could lead to many players being knocked out of playing. And for playoff hockey (and basketball) it's really going to be a joke if a team wins the championship because many of the star players who got their teams into playoff positions are unable to play.

NHL had a deadline of this past Monday for players to opt out. With that date passed, now it's going to take an injury or contracting Coronavirus in order to be put on the injured list.

Phil—
I think the secrecy surrounding who has it and doesn’t is merely a legal issue. All of our medical issues and history is required by law to be kept between you and doctors unless you choose to make the information public. MLB isn’t announcing them either for same reason. They’re going to list guys on the IL with no designation or undisclosed which will kind of let everyone know anyway. It’s simply a matter of not wanting to break laws and be held liable for it if any player didn’t want it known for any reason.
On a side note not resorted to your posts...
Anyone else as surprised as I am the league isn’t requiring all players to wear the full face shields upon their return? It seems to be an easy way to keep guys safe. Their breath, sweat can’t get into one another’s face if a shield is blocking it. They can sanitize their shields ok bench each shift break. Makes no sense to me. NBA can’t do this. They are totally exposed at all times but NHL could mitigate some of the risk by requiring it.

I know you have the hippaa laws but what I'm saying is players have come out and said they have Coronavirus. The NHL put out notice that no one is allowed to moving forward. It shouldn't be up to the league, it should be up to the player. It's not like they're saying they have a rare contagious disease, this is a world wide pandemic so why make the players keep it quiet?

But the NHLPA wanted peace and made a lot of decisions for the players without their vote. There’s a clause in the PA that days they can make executive decisions in dire times or something like that. Fehr had more power than many would like at that time. I’m not sure Don has much fight left in him, he agreed to a lot of the owners demands, and made it up in escrow. But the owners got their way in this new cba!!!

Good call. Only explanation is a sinister one. League doesn’t want to be forced into a stoppage that would inevitably occur if in the course of a week like 5-10 stars all get it. By keeping that information private they can at least attempt to thwart the calls for a stop.

On the other hand, as much as some of us have been complaining about lack of physicality on the Hawks' part, they'll have no problems staying 6 feet away from the opposing players.

So here's a thought..... Bowman in his genius has been building this team in the last 3/4 years for exactly this reason. Hawks odds are much better winning the cup because the playoffs are going to be no-contact, which the Hawks do better then any team in the league.

At this rate by the time they're scheduled to play, they'll be digging so deep into the farm they may have to activate the ambassadors.

Oddly enough, while I am unhappy with their current situation, I'm not as mad about it as I thought I'd be. It's the funny thing about expectations. When they were sky high and we expected them to win every night, I'd get bent out of shape and really mad/down when they didn't (especially against a rival). Now that there's no expectations and I assume they're going to lose every night I kinda just shrug it off. Of course, I'd rather it be the other way around but...

Thanks man, glad to be back, hope you're doing well. likewise, man! doing fair 'round these parts here. looking forward to the day when we are back to normal. I figure somewhere around 300 or so more days to go before a return to semi-normal. probably tack on another 365 or so before things are mostly-normal. any estimates on when full on normal is to return are TBD..... in the meantime, estimates on how many rounds they get in before having to shut this farce down? I'm gonna say mid second round, so about halfway.

When you got something special, it’s easier to get on board and get into the games more. Nowadays, I’ve actually gone to a shitty Wings game instead of staying home watching the Hawks. Nothing beats live hockey, I don’t care for the Winged Wheel, but that arena is amazing and my boy loves it there. 5 years ago, we were on the coach watching the Hawks, well, at least I was and my boy was going to bed by the time the game started. Games start at 8:30 here. I think hold the miss a game for anything. Now? I watch if I’m home!!!

I'm gonna say mid second round, so about halfway. I don’t want to get political on here. But I really feel for you fine folk over there. When leaders would rather mouth off than give direction, it’s not going to go well. Imagine FDR or The Truman or Kennedy etc during times of war or the threat of war blaming their political rivals and not uniting the front for the betterment of democracy? And I’m not just talking about the orange fella. All levels of government have seemed to fail. I’m not a big fan of Canadian politics. But we’ve seemed to put our differences aside and kick some ass here. Plus I’m positive we seen the worst of this thing last November, December and January. However, our leaders, especially Doug Ford has really put aside his agenda and let the health professionals do their thing. He really just stepped aside for the betterment of our province. And I believe he was/is a guy who likes Trump. Anyways, I’m sorry if any of that struck a nerve with anyone. I for one still see America as world leaders, but America’s leaders didn’t lead and now they’re not world leaders when the world needs them the most. I’m pulling for the American folks, I still feel you’ll pull through, cuz you always have!!!
