On the old boards I started a Hagel page not long after the Hawks signed him so I thought I'd start one here.
There's a reason Brent Sutter thought highly of Hags and the Red Deer Rebels captain, Reese Johnson. These guys do whatever it takes for their team to win.
He's not producing on offense yet but he keeps getting more ice time and now playing on the PK. Almost scored on two great chances shorthanded vs the Canes, plus he was playing in the last minute trying to hold a 1 goal lead.
Once he gets his first they'll probably come in bunches, especially if he works his way on the PP battling in front of the net.
Buffalo might regret letting him walk.

Love watching the kids busting their asses so it’s hard for the coach to sit them. Maybe Hagel is another late round draft that just took a bit longer to develop and now looks like a keeper. Plus, according to hockeydb, he STILL leads Thurgau in scoring in the Swiss league.

No doubt, him and Reese are hard workers and it's gotta push guys in practice, plus they can chirp and play smart hockey. Hagel started the season slow but produced to a point a game I think, cool he's still leading in Switzerland.

Saskatchewan has good ODRs being so flat lol plus they produce some hard working people, the cousins are evidence of that. I'm surprised I didn't know that they're cousins till Reese played his first game, makes it a cooler story. Because they were scouting Hagel they couldn't help but notice his center/cousin/captain Johnson, so they signed him as well. Guys know he's ready to take a spot so they better work hard, and they are.

both wore letters under brent sutter in red deer. johnson the "c" his last year (2018/19) and hagel the wore the "a" for two seasons. (2017/18 & 18/19) that likely speaks volumes about their character and work ethic.
nhl.com says hagel was born in saskatoon but his wiki page says he was born in morinville. anyways, still kind've flat around morinville. : )

And he did play all his hockey here in Alberta, including his AAA Bantam and Midget hockey in Dach’s hometown of Fort Saskatchewan. He’s got prairie DNA.

Can't believe I forgot to say something about Hagels first NHL goal, nice seeing Kane set him up and celebrate harder than Brandon.
Congrats Hagel, he had many chances and could've scored a few shorthanded, so hopefully the next isn't far away, then he gets them consistently like he's accustomed to.
Would've easily had over 20 goals last season in his first pro year in Rockford, if it wasn't for the stoppage.
Not sure why Buffalo let him walk but glad he's a Hawk and bringing great work ethic.

Great work ethic and speed should mean some success down the road. He'll have to develop his shot in order to really make it.

Yep, he doesn't seem to be the "go-to-the-net-and-bang-away" type of scorer, so he needs to work on his finishing skills. But if he gets to where he can pot 12-15 goals a year, he could be the latter day Dave Bolland -- the second coming as it were. The Hawks really need someone like that.

There's nothing wrong with his shot, 19 goals in his first pro year last season and over 40 the season before in Red Deer didn't happen by accident. He's still getting used to the speed of the NHL, he'll start scoring more.

He's had some moments of brilliance with his passing, but he needs to start finding the back of the net, particularly when he gets such chances as last night against Dallas.

It's hard not to love the kid's approach and like pdx said his passing looks good and it looks instinctual......you can't teach that 'eyes in the back of the head' stuff! I think goals will come and he's doin' ALL the important things in the mean time. Just wish the kid had 200lbs hung on that 5'11" inch frame,I know the game has changed and Hagel plays bigger than he is and is willing to engage but, this still happens........ www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7qSUKFa4Og

Hagel sounds like he's all for a trade (I'd be too) and King sounds like it's the last thing in the world he wants to hear. What would you put the odds of King being back next year at? I'd say 25% at most and only if Davidson stays IMO.......oh and he'd be cheap.

I won't be shocked if King is back for another year, mostly because it really doesn't matter that much next year.
at the same time, I kinda expect the new GM to bring in their guy to start to set the tone...

He just acknowledged knowing about the rumors and sounds flattered. I agree about King though, he'll only be back if Davidsons the GM because he'll be cheap and he's familiar with the team. Fingers crossed Mellanby is named the new GM 🤞

Thats the way I read it also Oldtime. Hagel is gonna be fun to watch next couple years. Is he a great 3rd line player or a legit top 6 on a contender?

Thats the way I read it also Oldtime. Hagel is gonna be fun to watch next couple years. Is he a great 3rd line player or a legit top 6 on a contender? That's a fair question..... I think his attitude, grit and willingness to engage automatically placed him in a bottom six role early on here because this org just doesn't see top six forwards with those qualities,so that mistake is easy to make and it is a mistake in this instance IMO. He was willing to fill that role early on,which is a complement to him. We saw him in an after-whistle scrum more often than not and in the occasional fight too,we havev't seen as much of that lately......we see him on a 25/50 pace now that he's slotted properly. I liked him at first due to that ,grit stuff I mentioned above but I saw skill too and OTH pointed out his offensive prowess with Red Deer last summer when some thought he had his nerve fightin' for that 1 1/2M that he knew he was worth. 30+ and 40+ in the WHL and 19 in his Covid shortened rookie AHL season shows an ability to score at every level he had seen at that point and he's 2nd on the team in goals and GWG's w/o a ton of PP time @23. I think his instincts and attitude leave room for improvement and a real chance to be a hardnosed top six winger. On a contender? We're so far from a contender.......I dunno how to answer that but I think so.
