Just picked up The Hockey News Draft Preview issue. Similar yet different in their picks, a lot of the same guys I’ve seen in other mock drafts, just rearranged differently. This one has the Hawks with the goalie at #11. I’m still not sold on a goalie in the first round, it seems just as many if not more make it as later round picks. Goalie picking, like the other positions, isn’t a real exact science. To me there are too many interesting picks, especially centre’s, that should be available at the #11 spot. Still like to rid ourselves of some,of our prospects (they should make up their mind on who to put their effort into) to get another first round pick, or even another early second. There’s also a Kraken draft scenario, and the Hawks contribution is deHaan, which should make some people happy. Unless you figure he's worth 4.55M flat cap dollars......I don't......I'll be happy if he goes but I don't know why they'd take him. couple reasons I could think of off the top of my head: they need to reach the cap floor and he isn't terribly expensive when you have a blank slate. also, he is in the last year of his deal, so he could be flipped at the deadline for more assets or he plays there the whole year and then is off the books come summer of '22.

While I agree he could go. It’s not that out of the question. But Seattle has 3 years to get cap compliant. So there’s really no rush on taking on salary. If the Hawks are truly in a rebuild. I say keep deHaan. He’s not great, but we’ve seen at times he can be a stable piece for a young kid. I think DeHaan will look great elsewhere. Especially when he signs for 2 million on his next deal. It would be nice if his contract was gone and the Hawks could waste money on someone else. But I’m starting think it’s just doesn’t matter anymore. Scam had almost 20 million a couple years ago. And he blew it on deHaan and co. He’ll do it again. This so called rebuild is a scam. He’ll get a free agent or take on a contract like Kadri and overpay for a guy a team is giving away…. Hence DeHaan. So if deHaan goes. Fair enough, i think now it’s best to keep him and let the kids fight it out for the last 2-3 spots. The Hawks need competition and guys on one year deals and or on their last year. deHaan could be a great trade chip next season if he’s having a great year, which is possible due to him needing a contract. So I say keep him and try get something outta him!!!

I will be equally pleased if the goalie we take is Wallstedt. not so much if it is Cossa (I'm not sold on him as a high first round pick, I think he goes late first/early second). I expect us to take a F, though, which is also fine with me. unless one of those top 4 dmen drop to us, I'd rather add a forward in the first round, personally. In a scenario where Wallstedt is still there at 11, a case can be made that he would be the "best player available". From what I've read about Wallstedt from a few different sources, he could be considered a better player than the fifth best dman or the seventh best forward, which is what the Hawks would be getting if they take a skater at 11. I agree with you though about the Hawks will very likely go F. I would think they would like a C as their first choice, depending how the draft goes. From what I've read, if the top four dmen go early as expected, the fifth dman at 11 would be a bit of a reach. Maybe the Hawks see them a little different? I know I've said this before; what's important is where the teams themselves have these guys rated. Remember Montreal taking Kotkaniemi #3 a few years ago? Or even the Hawks taking Dach at #3?

Kotkaniemi was ranked like 13th, and the Habs took him at 3. Pretty weird when they could’ve traded down to even 8 and got him there. Dach was ranked around 4-6, he went 3. That’s not as bad as the Habs reach there. I think this year a dman should be a priority. If the top 4 aren’t there. I’d take McTavish if he were there. If he wasn’t. Id trade down a bit and take another dman. I think a dman that no one knows about can slip through and be very good at 20 or later. Picking up an extra 2nd rounder would be nice. Having 3 of them would be smart in this years draft!!!

Like Ron Francis says, the best player in this draft could come from the fourth round, such is the way the year has gone. He, other G.M.’s and head scouts say they will have to rely on their regional guys more than any other year due to travel restrictions. Europe may have had somewhat normal seasons but N.A. leagues had either zero or truncated schedules meaning a lot of players had short periods to sell themselves. Yes, some of the more scouted prospects got invites to tournaments but a lot of kids will fall through the cracks. Videos from games will have to serve but it’s not the same as live when you can only see part of the ice at any one time. There is some talk of a couple of CHL leagues trying to arrange showcase games but how competitive these would be is up in the air.
No draft combine either, so it’ll be hard for teams to follow up on the kids improvements, Francis himself says his maturity, physical and mental, grew tremendously from age 17 to 18. Therefore he predicts a lot of kids might go under the radar this year and go undrafted and to expect several 19 year olds to go next year making a strong draft look even better. Probably some more invitees to camps as well. Probably some opportunities here for the organization that really does it’s homework.

Lanks could end up being very good, but he isn't there yet and maybe he never gets there. this team needs so many pieces that I'd say the best player available is the one to take at 11.

I'm not worried on who they draft, I have good faith in our scouting department, my biggest worry , is Stan making bone head trades, not so much now that we are not going for a cup, Jack you say thsa we have drafted badly, all i can say is go back and look at our draft's and tell me who you think we should have taken instead, our team I think would look much better with Danault , Teravainen, Hayes, hartman saad and Jokiharju , I just don't see why we are not happy with kelly and company

If the Hawks took someone different, it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t pan out. Look at Nick Suzuki. The Habs traded for him in the Patioretty deal. Now if he stayed part of the VGK, does he develop into that player? I doubt it simply because he wouldn’t have gotten that chance. At the time Teravainen was a 3rd line player here. He got top line minutes in Carolina and it developed him into the player he is now. Bad trades? Yes. But more of not giving chances to these young guys a lot sooner. This is why having Toews and Kane here can actually hurt the development of more young guys. They have to play big minutes, and the reason why Toews and Kane became great, is simply because they got the opportunity. Now unless they’re willing to take a back seat, the next wave won’t get the chance to develop. I’m not ripping 19/88. Just they’re still in win now mode. And probably won’t play a 3rd line role so kids can get opportunities. This upcoming season, kids like Dach, Kurashev, etc will need those end of game minutes to develop. They need those mins on both sides of victory and defeat. The drafting hasn’t been terrible. But no matter who they take, they need a real shot at some point. That’s why we see so many ex Hawks doing well elsewhere. They’re put in real situations that allow them to become the player they should’ve been. The situation with the Hawks was never really to give kids a real chance until now. And now they’re rushing kids. So the situation here is more than likely not going to work!!!

Bob, is that a typo and you meant to say "Beer" River?
Hope the fish are biting and the flies stay away. I have to get out and do some shore fishing on the Missouri River soon. My son is coming up from AZ in July and we'd really like to have some fish already in the freezer before he gets here. We plan on going on a guided fish outing either on the River, Lake Sakakawea, or Devils Lake. It depends on the fish bite and the wind. I don't like to get tossed around on big water, I've done that before a few times.
Black flies were all over when I was unloading yesterday, had to keep the door closed in between trips cause they know to follow you but I did OK,only had to kill two. Go outside later with a giant glass of bourbon and this squadron of dragonflies shows up and tears the hell out of the black flies....it was Mother Nature welcoming her son!LOL wish I coulda bought the lil dudes a beer! and that is why I go up north at the end of the summer! hate them damn things. skeeters, horse flies, deer flies, noseeums, etc etc... I can do anything else no problem. only the blackflies drive me nuts. well, that and the beach flies on a warm calm day and you're stick in the boat without a fly swatter...

Bingo, and there are a few guys in the draft that can get them to the expansion lower cap level as well as being decent players. To wit: Bishop for Dallas has an NMC. The Kraken could snag Khudobin and got 3-1/3M right there... That's ~3M to the cap as well as a decent starting netminder. Not to mention that the Avs have both Grubauer and Dubnyk and can only protect 1. All of the 4 expansion-requirement D-men from Carolina (Slavin, Skeji, Gardiner, and Pesce) are a serious upgrade from DeHaan. I could go on... The only way I see DeHaan going is if the 'hawks throw in a sweetener trade. If that doesn't happen I could see almost anyone (including one of Subban or Delia) going over him.

I agree with what you guys say about DeHaan as far as why would you take a guy like him when there are younger guys with more potential? personally, if I am Seattle and Strome is available, I'm taking him. however, if they are thinking they can get a top 4 or even 6 other than DeHaan and then move him later after giving him enough minutes to look fair but stay healthy, it could be more valuable.

I kinda agree. DeHaan really isn’t that bad. Most are making him out to be just a horrible AHL fill and he’s stuck on a contract, like Jeff Finger. If the Kraken can add deHaan, Gawdner, and a few other serviceable dmen. They could have a decent team. I know many think Subban will be the guy. But I doubt it. He’s not that good and there’s many more where he came from. I doubt they take him!!!

He may not be an AHL-level d-man but he's basically a twilight-career Seabrook in terms of on-ice skill, with a decent-sized injury history, and with about half of the heart Seabrook had at any point in his career. Looking at his cost vs. output vs. health, and what the rest of the league is likely making available in terms of ~3.5-5.0M defenders, there are plenty of other choices out there for Seattle. In fact, I count 17 teams that have to expose a d-man in the 3.5-5M range signed through next season not including Chicago, and most of those guys are better than DeHaan. Like others I think if Strome is exposed he's snatched up. I think there's still an outside chance at one of our netminders since they would likely be coming in as a backup. But I have serious doubts that DeHaan is the one to go unless there's a trade where they take him off of our hands in return for a trade. Hell, I could see us offering Strome for a decent pick if they take DeHaan off of our hands, but if there's no plying trade like that I think Seattle chooses someone else.

I really hope the Hawks go “Fishing” this off-season in free agency and trades. Let’s hope they don’t land any “lunkers”. We need a lot of things to go right. We need the kids to develop into the big “fish” in the small pond and not the small “fish” in the big pond. Let’s just hope the management can reel in a big big one!!!

I read an article about Henrik Borgstrom a few days ago and the writer made that same point about him. The article was written while Borgstrom was still with Florida. He mentioned Borgstrom didn't put up much on offense in his 2/3rds of a season with the Panthers a couple of years ago and talked about how he (the writer) thought HB wasn't put in a real good situation. He said HB centered the 3rd line and was paired with "pedestrian linemates." The article also said Borgstrom only got about 12 min. of ice time per game. The writer wasn't trying to push Borgstrom as a future great player with more ice time but apparently felt HB wasn't put in a great situation in his rookie season and wasn't getting enough ice time to be make good progress and develop. It will be interesting see how Borgstrom does with the Hawks; you know he's going to get the ice time .

He’s got Toews and Dach in front of him. So he would be 3rd line center at best here. Like I said in my op. Toews and Kane are here to win. They’re not here to play 3rd line minutes. I’d like to see him and Dach battle it out for the 2nd line center. And to develop them, I’d love to see them get minutes when the games are on the line. But the Hawks are clearly looking for a playoff spot next year. Especially with the comments they’ve made. So we’ll see what happens. I think it’s just more of throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks around Toews and Kane!!!

HB was a third line center in Finland behind Alex Broadhurst. So I dont have high hopes but you never know. This league you have to do so much away from the puck, and to get the puck. I believe he will be 3rd line center to start because I dont see Strome here. Remember some of Hawks comments are about trying to help ticket sales Sorry about the re post.

I’m not holding my breath on this guy. He also got a few chances there to make the Cats. He just could t stick around. Scam Bowman has been getting many and I mean meany former first round picks, and it just hasn’t worked. Scam has had a lot of fetishes recently. He went for the smaller American players. He’s gone for just NCAA players, he had his Euro fix. And none of it has panned out. At some point the Hawks need a realistic plan!!!

i don't think i'd pick a goalie in the first round either but...
there's 18 goalies that have played this playoff year whose teams have been eliminated.
only 4 first rounders in the bunch. tukka rask (21st overall, jack campbell (11th overall), ilya samsonov (22nd overall) and spencer knight (13th overall).

Goalies mature very late. I’m not against taking one early on, but the chances are a GM won’t be around to see that kid through. Most make it 4-6 years after they’re drafted and some even later. Uncle Dale took Crawford with the 52 pick in the 2nd round in 2003. He didn’t become a starter till 2011. So he was 26 when he got his shot. So I understand what GMs won’t waste a high pick on a tendy. I’m all for it. But I’d hope the scouting staff was right and he can play within 3-5 years of being drafted. I’d rather take the positional need if possible!!!
