Having these two as assistants gives mgmt someone to fire after this next season. Then Luke can get his people when it may begin to actually make a difference. What leads you to believe that King and Dean who is from the Boston org are not Luke's people.

It is possible Dean is (both coached in the AHL possible their paths crossed there, also Montreal and Boston in same division), I would think King was a consensus from within the organization. It was well reported that KD wanted to keep him and find a role for him.

What leads you to believe that King and Dean who is from the Boston org are not Luke's people. As Nikos surmises I suspect Luke was asked to keep King - which I bet he was ok with and I can’t speak to Dean. That said if given a blank slate to hire “his” people, I doubt it would have been those two but I admit I could be wrong.

I think an assistant role for King is a good one. Yeah, he us not ready to be a King yet!😁

i think it was mentioned before somewhere but i'll plunk this here in the coach's thread anyways to make it official. The much-despised hybrid scheme that characterized the Blackhawks’ defense under Jeremy Colliton, then faded under Derek King, is now gone for good.
New assistant coach Kevin Dean said Thursday that he and Richardson agree in favoring “zone coverage more in the ‘D’-zone, not man-on-man.”
“That’s going to be up to Luke to firm that up, but in our early conversations, we seem to be kind of aligned,” Dean said. “Close hard when it’s your turn to close, separate when it’s your turn to separate, get some support from the low forward and get going the other way. But not man-on-man where you’re following somebody around all the time.”the article goes on to say this. Richardson, Dean and King haven’t yet all met in-person to divvy up the coaching responsibilities —and their staff may not even be complete yet —but it sounds like Dean will oversee the defensemen and it would make sense for King to oversee the forwards.“My strength is on the defensive side of the puck,” Dean said. “[I’ll] teach these young defensemen...[how to have] good structure in their game in terms of stick position, body position, angles.”chicago.suntimes.com/blackhawks/2022/7/14/23218844/blackhawks-dominik-kubalik-red-wings-kevin-dean-defensive-scheme-zone-man-to-man

That’s refreshing to hear. Thanks GT. Look at Joker and even Boqvist. Once they got out of the shitty mans system. They automatically started having success.
I believe Korchinski will be here in a years time. His skating is just to smooth. There’ll be nothing left for him in Jrs. Let him play 6-7 role with some pp time and he’ll be ready to rock in his 2nd year!!!

Sure, Boqvist did not succeed over here, but I personally blame Hawks organization for his failure over here. Was slotted too early and not properly. Look at what CBJ have done with him so far. Was playing third line minutes, quaterbacking PPs and he become one of the most scoring Ds in this league. At least in the last season. I wish him to continue in this trend.

I'm sure the last guy pressured JC to play his shiny new toy on D, I doubt KD and Maciver will do that plus Luke of all people should know when a young dman is ready and they'll listen to him. It's going to be a tough season but with an actual system and a hard working team hopefully they'll keep games close.

This is such a relief and will make watching much more enjoyable. Great news that the new draft picks will be brought into a more familiar, standard system. Watching Dman running all around out to the blue line, or both of them behind the net was brutal and frustrating.

I believe part of the reason 19/88 are probably so pissed is that they believe the team would have faired much better under a different coach. If King had switched up the system back to what was there, things would have been different. The team was much better than it appeared. But as a GM like KD. He was there for a few years now and seen that the team was done. 2023 is a massive draft year. The time to tank is now.
The man on man stuff confused everyone. I mean everyone. Why JC would continue to watch it fail almost 2 years later is beyond me. I’m not sure that was him or if someone else wanted that like Crawford. Maybe Crawford sabotaged the guy and told him to run that? He wanted hear coaching duties again. He seen a chance to work with 2 hall of famers. If that was JCs. It was terrible any GM would allow his to take it that far!!!

Coach Q was a D-man and maybe that's an attribute for a head coach. Here's hoping! Paul Maurice was a D-man but then Gallant and Berube were wingers - oh well so much for that theory.

But Gallant and Berube were tough and played strong defensively so they know strong D wins games, especially in the playoffs. Can't wait to see Lukes system.

Curious how Kane and Toews like playing for Luke. Have not myself seen anything negative about Luke yet although it won’t take long if they get off to a start like last year.

Luke said they're going to play a box plus 1, plus an up tempo style of D system to try and get pucks back faster and save energy for offense.
Toews really likes it and it's what some of us have been saying for a while, play the box and keep it simple.
Plus Luke said that Domi will play center and Reichel will have to earn a spot on the top lines because he's not playing wing on the 4th line. That's how it should be, if he's not ready he goes back to Rockford.

Luke was interviewed on local Chicago NBC sports today and he did not mince words as far as admitting the team will have a lot of challenges to be competitive this season and that it’s no secret it’s a complete rebuild from scratch. He said he is very competitive and wants to win every game he is part of but he’s committed to building the new foundation the right way. I know this isn’t news really but it made it quite clear they will struggle this season and mgmt knows it.

Was not aware of this sad news in Luke's personal life. Luke shared a personal story and how it will connect with the Hawks. He lost a child to suicide and plans to make sure players are heard and are pleased on an emotional factor as well. Luke said: "Losing a child to suicide, Luke said the overwhelming support he received made the biggest impact. Because of that, he plans on making sure the players are heard and is pleased with how big of an emphasis the Blackhawks are putting on mental health."

That says a lot about job security. I think Luke is safe here for a total of 5 years. Same with KD. I think over the next 3 seasons there has to be a lot of steps forward. Imagine in 3 seasons from now we see a team in the bottom 5? I’m sure Luke will be first to go in that scenario. But I’m quite confident it won’t come to that!!!

That’s terrible to hear about Luke’s daughter Yes it is. It makes me cry to this day. No one should have to go through this. Luke has never used this as a crutch. And he’s a great man. I’m happy he’s the coach of the Hawks!!!
