As the Sun's Ben Pope mentions, Davidson does control the situation to a degree. He can move out veteran players early - and I believe Connor Murphy would be the first guy to go. He can also overcook some of the prospects in Rockford, including and maybe in particular Lucas Reichel. I do think this concern is legitimate. The team has many potentially very motivated veteran players on the last year of contracts. There are also a number of young players attempting to establish their games. This team will be terrible, but will it be terrible enough? I still believe a couple more have to be moved out to hit the bottom. I could really see Kane and Toews resurfacing as the players we always loved and having good years and not willing to move. Is the coach and GM on the same page? I believe they are but it’s tough for a coach to not try to win and put out 19/88 for the win or tie. Especially when there aren’t any young kids to look to. I believe a couple dmen will be gone, and or just not play. I don’t believe McCabe will play much this year if at all. I could see Murphy not pushing himself to be in the lineup and missing a massive amount of time. So that will help the tank. I’m hoping that 3-5 trades are made this year. The GM clearly does not care about this roster. And rightfully so. The goal is to get draft picks and work from there. So I wouldn’t care too much about this roster if I were anyone. I’d also hope the coach plays different guys at the end of games to try not to win all the time. It’s kinda dirty, but when you’ve got a solid team in 3-4 years, those few extra wins you desperately tried for meant absolutely nothing. 2 years of this type of tanking is all it will take!!!

I'll just predict 21 wins. I'm not sure what total points to say. My son lives in Scottsdale and he is wondering how much tickets will be. They may be a hot item for the true hockey fans that live in the area. Placing the former rink in Glendale was a big miscalculation, as most people who attend hockey games don't live in the west suburbs. So is it near Sun Devils Stadium or whatever it may be called these days? I'm not sure where the new rink is located, but I know that they were going to build something on the ASU Rolling Hills golf course, so maybe that's where it is. That would be a ways east of the football stadium.

I don't think the Hawks will lose all 82 games. That's as optimistic as I can get. There's also a chance of overachieving. Should Toews get back to his old form; and if Domi, Athanasious, Raddysh, and Johnson play like top 6 players...then who knows.

I’ve always liked that mindset that comes from being the underdogs and proving all the naysayers wrong. Plus I want Kane and Toews in particular to do well and the better everyone plays, the better the trade values, etc. The mathematical chances of landing Bedard are against the Hawks so if they perform better than expected then they can land some other very good players.

Yep, I know. It's an odd position to be in when the team that you root for is...well, expected to fail and is explicitly designed for this purpose. Anyways, let's not forget that they got Toews as a 3rd pick; Seabrook as 8th; and Keith in the 2nd round. There are teams that win without the #1 overall. More of a concern is that they need to gel as a team, but there's pretty much no one on the team today who is expected to be here when the winning days come. In other words, there will be a few years wandering in the desert before they achieve cohesion.

I don't think you must have a #1 overall to have a successful team and I looked back at the list of #1 picks and to me it's inconclusive. Some are home run franchise players: Kane (as mentioned by T-man), Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos, MacKinnon while there are some notable misses. At one point the Oilers had 3 in a row: Taylor Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov yet did not develop a particularly successful playoff team. But maybe the #2 picks behind these worked out better and should have been #1 picks? Hard to say. I guess while it would be great to land a #1, a damn good team could be assembled without one.

Sure Taylor Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov were all #1 overall, do not think any of them were considered generational like Bedard. To your point though probably not an absolute must but would be nice to have it this year .

Some of the Oilers were bad drafting and also like the Hawks, they couldn’t wait to show off their shiny new toy. Development is key. The Oilers just hoped it would all work out. But barely any of their 2nd or 3rd rounders made it from that era. So drafting was awful at best.
You do not need a 1st overall. But they sure do help. Look at all the latest teams to have won the Cup. Avs (Mackinnon), Tampa (Stamkos, Hedman), Washington (OV), Pitt (Crosby), Hawks (Kane). 10 of the last 12 Cups handed out have had a #1 overall on the roster. Boston and St Louis were the 2 that didn’t.
It’s not 100% but the proof is out there. It seems teams with a #1 overall usually win a Cup. Or at least 90% do!!!

I think your math might be off here. who on LA was a #1 overall? since 2010 (the past 13 Cups), I count 9 of 13. regardless, the point stands. you don't need a first overall pick to win, but it DEFINITELY helps your chances...

However, I don't think that it is either a necessary or sufficient condition. There have been successful teams that did not have a generational #1 talent, e.g. the Kings, Boston, St. Louis. And even in the case of the Hawks, some of the key pieces were there by the time Kane and Toews showed up. I would also that it was good that Kane, Toews, and others spent at least a year (or more) struggling and developing their winning pedigree. In 07-08 season, when the Hawks narrowly missed the playoffs, they had a nine game losing streak followed by some more struggles. This is good for young players.

Should be an interesting season. Instead of watching a race to finish first in the standings, we will be watching a royal battle to finish with the worst record to have the best shot at Bedard. My, how times have changed.

Moe, Larry and Curly? Eenie, Mynee, and Mo? Getting Bedard won't do much in the short run. He could be so frustrated that, in the long run, he will get out of town as fast as possible. All of teams mentioned above in your post had great players to play alongside with the #1s. The Hawks won't even come close to doing that for Bedard. Big difference!!!

Well Jack, we don’t know what the future holds. All I can say is this. So far, I see Korchinski and Reichel. Both look to be top line players. Or at a minimal top 6. There’s also Nasser. There will be more draft picks coming. Savoie looks to be another Shaw type player. This is why I’m happy KD decided to get some picks in here last year. The whole team isn’t going to be built off of first round selections, but he got 3. Next years draft I’m sure you’ll see closer to 14 picks. Hawks currently have 10 picks next year. Two 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders and two 3rd rounders. I’d have to think think there’s at least 3-4 decent trades coming that’ll involve picks. Also the Hawks have 9 picks in 2024. With 2 first rounders. So there’s a lot coming. If 19/88 decide to throw the Hawks org a bone and agree to move. Both players will garner first round picks if not multiple firsts. So this could be rebuilt very fast if some of the scenarios discussed end up taking place. Hang in there Jack. I know it looks bleak. But once you see some top end talent coming in year after year, it’ll be worth it. I was once told, “If you’re not patient, you’ll become one”!!!

The thing that impressed me about him, besides his skating and hands, is how humble and mature he is.

I won't say I'm a lot more optimistic than you jack but we should also have expectations for a team that dumped a LOT of young talent for picks and cleared a lot of cap space along the way. The picks of the last two drafts, the number of high picks in next year's deep draft and 5 picks in the first 3 rounds the following year to go along with a shit ton of cap space and more picks/prospects could come in trade SHOULD shorten a rebuild........let's see if it does. The new FO and coaching staff basically have a blank sheet of paper to design the team they want and I think we'd all expect serious progress within the next 2-3 years.

Like I wrote to Big T-----"I hope you are right." It would be enjoyable to watch Hawk games again with excitement and optimism, instead of anticipation of another loss. It will be interesting to watch them rebuild and see how it turns out. Who knows, as you say, it might happen sooner than pessimists like myself think it will.

I'm not saying what 'will' happen jack,I'm just saying we should see improvement with all the picks acquired.......we paid a LOT for those picks!!! Even if 4-5 kids really work out,all that cap space will have to be utilized properly, whether it's weaponizing it through taking on a bad contract or two for more picks the next two years or signing FA's when the time is right. A lot of the right decisions will have to be made and a bit of good fortune will also be required........like most rebuilding teams, I guess. The new GM has a limited body of work but his first draft looks to be pretty good and the return for the trades he's made has been decent too IMO and LR is a first time HC but he looks to have the right stuff as far as experience and attitude to be objective. It's all in their hands now and with the number of upcoming picks and amount of available cap space to come........I believe competent management SHOULD be able to return the team to relevance within 3-4 years. JMO.

How about a prediction when their first regular season win is going to be? They might have the best chance on the third game against the Sharks, but my bold pick is a win against Vegas on the heel of a back to back game. Theyll be destroyed by the Avs opening night (just like last yr) and theyll fix and get better enough to steal a win against Vegas. OT win counts as a win

I better be right, too. deeee troit suckssssssss!

Not because they suck, mainly because I don’t see the chemistry at all and I think it’ll take a little while before they get a “W”. Also both goalies have not set the crease ablaze. I think all the other goalies were much much better than Stalock and Mrazek. I think Mrazek is done. He’s gonna be an .875 tendy this year. And Staylocked will be even worse. That’s my prediction!!!
