senshot.com/2023/02/23/nikita-zaitsev-trade-raises-questions-trade-deadline/The comparison of the Zaitsev and Ladd trades was an unfair one IMO. Ladd had returned to play and was an effective player when healthy at the time of his trade and AZ wanted the player and the cap-hit,Zaitsev is a salay dump and an appropriate 'dump-worthy' warm body for only one dump season. What will be the 40th-45th pick in a great draft and a 3rd down the road is a good return from what I've seen recently. The Hawks picked-up the bonus vs waiting till the summer because they can and because they'll also use the player and it helped buy em the 3rd. I think we'll find Zaitsev's no shrinking violet and capable of 20min plus, decnet games at times.........until the unforced, heartbreaking turnover leads to the late GWG. In other words, perfect for next season. I guess stranger things have happened and like I said, the guy can play minutes and look decent for stretches..........maybe he could fetch something at next year's TDL.

Apparently Dorion and KD have a decent working relationship.

Sens fought their way to three over before having to go into Boston and Carolina, nice win in Montreal last night and they'll need to sweep their home back-back against the Wings to get back in contention after falling five points behind in the WC race. They'll regret all the close games they lost in regulation early on.....teams always do. Ottawa's still rumored to be in on a few different D-men......we'll see soon.

It's the Sens' fourth game in five nights but if they win it,they could possibly find themselves three points out of a spot with only two remaining teams to jump over. Would this push Dorian to make a move now vs the summer? Does Buffalo do anything to improve their young,high-scoring,competitive team before Friday? Postseason play after 11 years without would be big for their fanbase...........or they can just sit on that mountain of cap-space and picks, miss again this year and wonder why they don't draw again next year.

Fourth game in five nights but the Sens 'whooped' the Wangs again to the tune of 6-1,out-shot em 27-17 and out-hit em again 34-22 to win their 3rd straight and reach the high-point of their season..........the 6th best PK in the league killed all EIGHT of Detroit's power-plays too and the 4th best PP scored on 2 of their own 6........
Sabres lost in regulation, the Isle only got a point up in MN but the F'n Pens trailed 1-0 in Trashville with 9mins left before going on to win in regulation with the GWG coming at 18:21 of the 3rd. Five points back of the Pens for the last spot with only two teams now in between and six back of the Isle for the #1 WC spot with four games in hand......still a TALL order but a TDL deal would go a long way.

Sens get Chychrun - finally! One of the longer running rumors in the league.

Another one of your predictions has now been confirmed with Jakob Chychrun getting traded to the Sens. You have been saying this would be a good fit for the Sens and will see if he can help them this year, still 5 points out of 2WC spot.

YEAH BABY!!! It'll be good for the faithful to make a serious push, even if they miss. New owners real soon,a new downtown barn to possibly follow,23yro 35 goal scoring center Josh Norris back from shoulder surgery rested and ready and a BUNCH of kids just figuring things out. PO team next year!

PO team next year! I’m not ruling out this year! That team is gonna be stacked for a few years. I could see the pens failing to qualify for the second season. Also Buffalo just missing and or the Islanders bowing out. I really think Ottawa will make it. Ottawa has 4 games in hand on the Islanders (70) and only six points back (64). They’re even in games with Pitt. And only 5 points back. So I believe they’re in good shape. Plus they’ve got a young team with very few miles on them. They’re ready to rock!!!

Since Fla has their own thread and I don't want to keep junkin' up the 'around the league' thread..... senschirp.ca/news/senators-dominate-stars-for-fourth-straight-win/The Stars only allowed 8 goals in their first 5 games so far and imposed their defensive will for the first 39:23 of yesterday's game in Ottawa before the Sens sent it into the 3rd tied......the 3rd was all Sens though, potting three more to take a hard earned win against a real good team. Congrats to 31yro netminder Magnus Hellberg on his 3rd career W(he's actually won all 3 of his career starts)stopping 29 of 31 Dallas shots and to Derick Brassard for potting his first in over 1.700 days....... knew he'd come in handy. Now beat the Wild Thursday night for a confidence building 5-0-0 homestand! Congratulations to the 35yro for potting his 10th and 11th last night in his 1,000th game at MSG in a HUGE win! Brilliant PTO by Dorian and Smith. www.nhl.com/senators/news/mr-1000/c-341741264The look on the veteran's face after the huge game tying goal alone was worth tuning-in for!.......... www.nhl.com/video/brassard-scores-goal/t-336301516/c-15615689

Killed all four NY power-plays,one a 5min major and took advantage of the under-manned Rags(could only dress 5 D-men due to cap constraints)on a back-back,doubling them up in 3rd period SOG's 12-6.
Sabres lost,Panthers lost but the Pens eeked-out another one, which leaves the Sens 4pts out with 3 games in hand. Can't afford a letdown against the BJ's tomorrow night or in Chicago Monday! A tough four game western swing is next followed by a homecoming from the Avs and Leafs, followed by games against The Pens,Bruins,Tampa and NJ.......it's insanely tough out east!

The BJ's did beat the Oil,Jets,Stars and Leafs last month, for their only four wins and two of them were on the road,Sens better not overlook em after a big road win! It's a travel back-back for the BJ's too......all the makings of a trap game. I'll bet my ass Giroux and/or Brassard will remind the locker room that they're not good enough to take anybody lightly. If the Sens look to take the next step, and they're close, beating the weak sisters is a MUST! Odds are out east, the teams they're fighting for a spot with WON'T face a weak sister those nights and you make ground. They better beat the BJ's at home and the Hawks to start their trip because they finish their trip with the 'Krak',Nucks,Oil and Flames but they do get some rest in between games(five game trip actually). The trip will tell us TONS about the young team and so will their first game back......the Avs slapped em around 7-0 out there last time. Not getting points out of so many close, regulation losses early on will be a big hurdle to overcome,a few 'loser points' would come in handy right now. They have 21 gms/42pts left and they'd probably need 30 of those points to get in........against tough competition!

It was a hot time in the full barn last night! Brassard's 1,000th cely and 'Chicky's raucous and successful homecoming complete with his entire family in attendance for the Sens first 5 game win streaK in 6 years.........all chanting "WE WANT THE PLAYOFFS"! Meaningful games in March was the mission this year and the young Sens will have all the meaningful games they can handle the rest of the season. Dam good thing there was no let-up against a weak sister because weak sisters will be few and far between the next 20 games, the Isle won last night,Sabres beat TB,the Caps won but at least the Pens lost.....too bad it was to Fla. Dam good thing! With all the good stuff last night, the one thing that struck me this morning was 20yro Tim Stutzel's post game interview......
Forget about pottin' his 30th and 31st,the 2nd a shorty, the 1st unit penalty killer extraordinaire made sure to mention his rare TO on the kill which led to a BJ's PP goal.......the Sens had killed 32 of their opponent's last 34 PP's at that point.
A few players to notice tomorrow night other than the obvious.... 23yro 6'3' 233lb center Mark Kastelic came in the 5th round after a productive WHL career and is coming along in a bottom-six role, winning 59% of his draws and doing some dirty work. 25yro 6'4" 224lb forward Gauthier was also an interesting 'get' from the Rags for Mott, the former 1st round pick of the Canes had very good Jr and AHL campaigns but is yet to make a mark in the NHL......fast for his size though. These guys are at the age where we've seen other big forwards break-through and big, young, cheap bottom-six if not. 'Big Brady' has been a man amongst boys all year too and he's still a boy himself!

I know it’s early Bob. But this is the exact type game you warned the Sens of. The win does nothing for the Hawks. But the win does a lot for the Sens. They’re 3 points back of the last spot. I’m hoping they get there. Start with 2 tonight!!!

The potential trap game that worried me was the BJ's Saturday night,I thought the big night for Brassard at home after beating the Rags in NY could be a distraction but thy took care of business. I guess they were overdue to lay an egg and the best time to do it is when the opposing GT stands on his head. The 22yro netminder was also overdue for his first regulation loss and how they lost means nothing,I prefer it to a tough one goal loss with a blown lead.......it'll get their attention for the rest of the tough trip. The Sens looked good in the first to open the game but I gotta give Luke's veteran D-squad credit, maybe they come together around the demanding HC and have a good finish.

All the close regulation losses Ottawa had early in the year will more than likely come back to bite em in the ass.......a handful of 'loser points' is often all that separates who gets in and who doesn't.

Cam Talbot out for 3 weeks so Sogaard is the guy for a critical stretch here. Get the offense cranking again and keep it in the O-zone.

The Sens this year look like the 2008 Hawks. Where the Hawks missed the playoffs by 4 points. Then the next year they went to the conference finals, then the dynasty was on. I think the Sens have that same type feeling. They have sooooo many good players. Tkachuk, Stutzle, Dcat, Batherson, Giroux, Norris, Pinto, Chabot, Chychrun, Sanderson. All that right there reminds me a lot of the Hawks. Plus they’ve still got a few coming.
Their rebuild is complete. They’re turning the corner and have an established core group. They just need experience and they’re getting it now. I’d maybe upgrade the goaltending. Nothing against Talbot, but he’s just too injured for my liking. And too inconsistent over his career. Their rebuild only took 5 years to get here. That’s very impressive!!!

But, the same people will say that Chabot’s replacement is already in house, like Zub, so Chabot wouldnt be a big loss. Ottawa has a lot of players in the pipeline. I think they need three things- 1. i agree with you about the goalie situation and there really isnt a “good” goalie in FA. Maybe trade Chabot for that goalie? 2. Their coach sucks, they need a better one to take them further 3. Salary cap, they need to get better soon before all the entry level contracts expire for the young guys. Theyre already giving up picks to get rid of contracts

Even the great Nick Lidstrom didn’t win his first Norris until he was 31. I will say this. DJ Smith is a good dude and a good coach. I’ve known him for quite a while. He’s the perfect new age coach. He doesn’t come down on the guys and he understands how they wanna be treated. He won 3 Memorial Cups ( 2 as assistant and 1 as head coach). He put in his time. Spent 10+ years figuring out coaching. The Sens are a young team that needed some tough lessons. They’ll be good next year. And all because DJ taught them lessons. They get it now. They’re like 12-3-1 in their last 15. Same as Boston. They made a huge step this year and they’ll be fine. Making the playoffs this year was a tall order. Next year teams like the Leaves, Rangers etc will have difficulty making the playoffs. Even the Bruins won’t be this good again. This is just a stepping stone for the Sens. Just like the 2008 Hawks. They’ll be good. Scary good!!!
