game 6 and canada wins 3-2 to keep our chances of winning the tournament alive. paul henderson with his first of 3 consecutive GWGs. this is the game where things started to resemble a war more than a hockey game. canada was complaining about the german refs because they ended up with 31 minutes in penalties to the soviets' 4 minutes. if my memory serves me, i think canada likely deserved most of them. they were as chippy as hell. this was also the game of "the slash", where bobby clarke's 2 hander to kharlamov's left ankle might've been a turning point. although kharlamov finished the game and the series, he wasn't as effective.
the best thing about the win was that the country had real hope for a comeback. as a result we got to listen to game 7 in the classroom on the radio and of course got to watch game 8 in the gym.
edit: "black mark on hockey" indeed, but the russians weren't fckn angels either. clarke's slash got all the press but this slash on henderson in game 5 you never hear much about.

i'll tell you, i hated montreal back in the '70s but oddly there was some of their players i didn't hate and dryden was one of them. he's always been an articulate and intelligent speaker. he gives his thoughts here about the '72 series and how it changed the game in north america.
and man oh man...i often wish i was born earlier a few years and was one of the 3000 canadians who travelled to russia for the last 4 games. i can't imagine what an experience that must've been.

likely better to put games 7 and 8 here together.
the last 2 games start at 1 hour and 4 minutes in and it's 30 minutes to the end.
i can gab about this until the cows come home but better to just watch the hilites here.

Curious how many of these companies exist as their own entities today. There’s lots more in the thread I forgot about. Loved the old Sherwood 5030’s.

Curious how many of these companies exist as their own entities today. There’s lots more in the thread I forgot about. Loved the old Sherwood 5030’s. never bought a bit of hockey gear in my life but i do own a blackhawks' CCM sweater. did you know CCM stood for Canada Cycle & Motor? (i didn't) a little bit of history from their wiki page. i'd heard of "tacks" skates before but never knew much about them. i think tacks (and super tacks) were a pretty popular choice of skates for a while. Founded in 1899, CCM produced bicycles for many years in the area of Weston, Toronto, Ontario. They also briefly produced the Russell automobile.
By 1905, with saturation in the bicycle market, CCM began producing hockey skates using scrap steel that was left over at the plant from the manufacture of bicycles and automobiles, and subsequently began manufacturing other hockey gear.
In 1937, CCM acquired the Tackaberry brand made by a Manitoban named George Tackaberry and "Tacks" remained the company's signature skate until late 2006.

Very interesting about CCM! I have a pair of CCM Tacks 952s gathering dust in the basement. Prior to those I had some Bauer low end skates that were uncomfortable as hell. I liked the CCMs but haven’t skated in a couple of years. If the trend in skates is like other sports footwear and equipment, I bet today’s top end skates are feather weight light.

this guy is the epitome of underrated.
30 or more goals in 17 of his 19 nhl seasons. 708g, 627a in 1432 reg. season games. 8th all time in goals scored.
from his wiki page:
Despite his long impressive career, Gartner never won the Stanley Cup or played in the Cup Finals, never won an NHL award, and was never named to the postseason All-Star Team, being one of the few NHL players with this distinction to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
winning a cup in this league counts for a lot i guess. he was one of the fastest skaters all time and was pretty good in his own end too. it's pretty wild that a guy with all his creds you never hear much talk about.
anyhoo, he also scored the last goal in the old stadium as well. ('94 playoffs)

for the record...
I had to post the video for anyone who might not get the reference. I literally answer almost every question involving "how many of x does it take to get y" with 3. most of the time it elicits confusion and/or annoyance...

former blackhawk goalie dave dryden passed away a couple days ago. i don't remember much of him, his last year in chicago was about when i started cheering for the team. he played 68 games across 3 seasons for chicago but the bulk of his work was in the WHA. funny about how often you learn things about someone after their passing. i never knew it but dave dryden designed the first cage type goalie mask that they all use today. also made many innovations to other pieces of goalie gear that are still prevalent today. “Dryden would show up at Cooper (the hockey company now known as Bauer) when I was working there,” Harrison said. “He’d come into the design department and ask, ‘Why do we need all this leather on the glove and blocker? We can use nylon and make it lighter.’ ” It was trial and error back then. The nylon worked well in areas of the equipment that didn’t come in contact with the ice very often. So Dryden, along with the equipment designers at Cooper, tinkered until they found the magic combination of weight and durability.
Dryden, who retired after the 1979-80 season with the Edmonton Oilers, was the first to wear a padded practice jersey that he sewed together on his own. More than a decade passed before the first padded practice jerseys were available in stores.
While impossible to verify, Harrison believes that Dryden was the first to attach arm pads to his chest protector. Goaltenders had always worn them separately before Dryden decided to bust out the needle and get creative.
“With the cage combination mask, how it occurred, (Dryden) came into Cooper with an idea,” Harrison recalled. “He had the front half of an SK600 player helmet, and he had a wire cage that he had soldered together himself. And he had the back piece of one of his other masks.”
Harrison remembers it like it was yesterday. He was still working for Cooper at the time but had a burgeoning mask-making business on the side.
“Dryden told Cooper: ‘I want a mask that fits like a fiberglass mask, but give me the eye protection of a cage. And it needs a backplate,’” Harrison recalled. “Well, Cooper refused to make it. They said it has to be a helmet.”
When his employer said no, Harrison saw an opportunity.
“I told Dave: I’ll design that,” Harrison remembers fondly. “He went to training camp in Europe with the Oilers, and he got nailed one of the first times he wore it. Dave said that he didn’t feel a thing. He got hit right in the center of the mask and nothing happened.”
Today, every goaltender in the NHL wears a cage combination mask.www.yardbarker.com/nhl/articles/amp/dave_dryden_wasnt_just_a_great_goalie_he_was_an_equipment_innovator/s1_16958_37968382he reminds me of tony esposito when it comes to innovative equipment design, although tony's were, shall we say "designed to give him (and him alone) a competitive edge." : )

A lot of stuff happened on 10/9 over the years in the NHL. Canucks played their first game in 1970 and Caps their first in 1974.

October 12th, 2009 - A night to remember
Thanks for posting this. Great memories there. I was at that game as a season ticket holder. 2 things stands out in my mind. First, there was a mass exodus either after the 4th or 5th goal, even though it was still the 1st period. So for all those that left, they missed the greatest comeback in Blackhawks history. I NEVER leave any sporting event early, no matter the results.
My 2nd memory is at that time, Versus was the NHL home and they were in a dispute with Directv so it was off the service when this game was played. I always recorded every home game despite being there, simply because sometimes you catch things on TV you may have missed at the game, plus I loved listening to Pat Foley (although in this case it was a national broadcast so no Foley). So I was pretty PO'd that I couldn't rewatch this game initially. But several months later Versus aired it again, although in a condensed form, once the dispute between them and Directv had been resolved. So I did finally get to relive it!

back when it didn't matter the deficit, the team knew it could/would still win... what a run...

back when it didn't matter the deficit, the team knew it could/would still win... what a run... This might have been the game that led to their belief, happening in the first Cup run (2009/10 season). It may very well have been the game that catapulted them, more so then the previous seasons playoff experiences.

Hopefully they can find a cure for this awful disease, probably not in most of our lifetimes, but soon enough. It is heartbreaking to see photos and stories like this. This guy took a beating when he first came here, was tough as they come and held up very well. Unfortunately, he is not able to beat this terrible disease. God Bless you Mr. Salming.
