I would also consider taking on the Merzlikins contract. Columbus likely would require a pick back if they give up their first. Perhaps offer Mrazek and a fourth round pick. Then look to move up. I think LA is in the similar situation in wanting to move on from their overpriced backup goalie. So is Toronto. Surely there is a deal with one of these teams. I would not hesitate to take all three for the right price and then buy one or more of them out. There are so many cap-strapped teams looking to unload an overpriced player and willing to pay for the space. To my mind, the smart approach here is to spend right up to the cap on these types of deals (especially for players with short terms). Buy out the players not wanted or needed. Merzilikens (like OEL) still has extensive term on his contract. He would not be my first choice, but if the price is right, he is worth considering. To take on all of Merzlikens deal, they’d have to part ways with pick 22. Especially 4 years. But he’s still a capable tendy. So if the Hawks hypothetically made a trade with Van for pick 11, and gave up pick 19 and a 2nd for Boeser. The. Picked up Merzlikens for pick 22. I’d like to see the 2nd rounders traded to try and move up into the 1st round again. To have 4 first rounders would be ideal. Considering the Hawks would be nowhere near the bottom of the heap anymore. Probably in the 8-13 range. So getting a top pick next year would be out of the question. So have 7 first rounders in 2 years would help. And if the Hawks are tending upwards. Maybe the Hawks make a move like the Sens did last year? Get a young player that a team is willing to part with. I think the Hawks would get 4 players that would be NHL players. I believe the Hawks could fill out the roster much easier with a draft like that. I know not all of them will make the NHL right away. But as Boeser leaves UFA, Hawks can “build from within”!!!

There are rumblings Columbus wants to move the Merzlikins contract, 4 more years with a $5.4M cap hit. The Columbus Blue Jackets have been massively disappointed by their goaltending as a whole this past season, but especially Merzlikins and some are suggesting they even try and put him on waivers to see if he would be claimed. I doubt #3 is in play, but they do have #22 pick from the LA Kings. Not sure I take 4 years of Merzlikins for the #22 pick though. He did play much better in 2021-2022 and thus was rewarded with a 5-year deal. I still feel Vancouver (#11) or possibly Pens (#14) are the better matches with higher picks than Columbus #22. Vancouver with serious cap issues and Pens need picks to replenish their system. At one point this year Pens were rated #29 out of #32 prospect rankings. Do you offer 2 or 3 2nd picks for Pens #14? or #19 and one of the mid 2's for #14? Got believe Pens would want the #19 though in any trade if they do make one. I would take Merzlikens for the 22nd oa. Then I’d trade 22 and two 2nd rounders for pick #14. It would be great having 1,14,19. Or 1,14, 22!!! Btw, Merzlikins does have a modified NTC and his final two years his base salary from $6M goes down to $5.525M & $4.225M so obviously he would have to agree to the deal in some regard.

As it stands, Hawks' ownership is in that "sweet spot," as I mentioned before.
Ticket sales are exploding. In a few weeks, the fan base will be mothballing their Kane jerseys so they can buy a Bedard.
The team is saving millions on their No Frills/Walmart roster, and nobody is complaining. Ownership recognizes there is no need to spend money to improve the on-ice product. Fans are buying into Davidson's "plan." This is the time to cash in.
My guess is that the team's salary structure will remain closer to the league minimum than the cap.
Davidson will tell us he is "saving" the cap space to use later. This is nonsense. He has no need to be saving cap space now - given the types of deals we are discussing. Most of these players will be out of the system entirely before Davidson's team's budget is approaching cap max dollars. Teams can't save cap space in one year to use in another.
My guess is that we see perhaps one or perhaps two of these type deals this off-season. The only incentive here is to reach the cap floor.

It would be interesting to know what Davidson's budget is for next year.
Does he have permission to spend to the cap? My guess is that he does not. Not even close.
If so, most of these fantasy trade speculations are off the table.

It would be interesting to know what Davidson's budget is for next year. Does he have permission to spend to the cap? My guess is that he does not. Not even close. If so, most of these fantasy trade speculations are off the table. Yes, we're all just guessing. You construct a logical argument to support your guess that Rocky has not given the green light to Davidson to spend to the cap ceiling. It makes sense, especially given past history in terms of the profit motive for the family business. Yes - he OK'd excess expenditures during the Cup era, but with little hope of playoff games at this time, meaning loss of those gate receipts and concession sales - you can certainly understand and be sympathetic to a tightening of the budget. But I think there's another train of thought worth considering. It starts with the buy in for the rebuild. I think it's reasonable to assume Rocky signed off on the rebuild knowing full well that profitability would take a hit for several years. He must have made that decision with the promise that a Cup contender would emerge from the rebuild that would restore profitability commensurate with having a Cup contending team. In other words - he decide to take short term loss for the promise of long term profit. If all that is true - then why wouldn't he allow the rebuilding architect the freedom to use every resource at his disposal to bring about the completion of the rebuild as soon as possible? I'm not suggesting that Rocky would give KD carte blanche willy nilly. I assume that KD has to make a case why spending cap space money is prudent and in keeping with the plan - but if he is able to provide convincing argument that doing something like trading for OEL is a net gain in the rebuild plan - then it is my guess Rocky would authorize the expenditure.

This,,,, No Frills/Walmart roster, I believe is the correct way to get back into meaningful hockey games again, or do you want to live through the 70,80 & 90's again. Give the guy a chance to build something , don't be putting words in his mouth already it's only been a year, so far , in the short time he's been here , I can't think of a Bowman type move he's made, my buddy even mentioned the dubas exchange, said it was dirty of KD to leak a hint of the trade, we all know what the ONT , media is like, but he said the rest of the Gm's took note, Even old Brouwer, a scout with the blows now, got a chuckle out of it, So like I said earlier I think he's earned some respect, and I'm sure between him and Luke, they will do whats best for the team , but that's just my opinion

We will find out in a few weeks.
If Davidson does use "every resource at his disposal to bring about the completion of the rebuild," then I will be first in line congratulating both him and the owner on their great plan. By definition, this would require taking on many bad short term contracts this year and spending all available cap space to gain futures. But by the general manager's own words, the intention this year is to "save" cap space for the future (a nonsense, red-herring argument) which likely means hovering again near the cap floor.
The team won the lottery in spite of itself. This windfall guarantees the team will be profitable moving forward with Bedard on board fueling the merchandise and ticket sales. There is no cap space to "save" for the future if dealing with short-term contracts.
Profitability is not taking a "hit." It is about to explode. Didn't Rocky tell us the team was losing money during the sold out cup runs? Likely his accountants will find a way to do the same through the next generation .....

Didn't Rocky tell us the team was losing money during the sold out cup runs? Likely his accountants will find a way to do the same through the next generation ..... In all fairness. KD said the cap space they’ve created is by design. He wants to exploit teams that have problems. But he also said it takes two. He cannot trade with himself. He also stated that he has no plans to take on any long term contract. He wants to start from ground zero. That’s where expansion teams have an advantage. They literally start at zero, and get to pick and choose where to spend money. They’re going to a free agent superstore. I believe KD will want to move up in the draft a couple times this year. In his words, they’ve got this many draft picks by design. It’s not a fluke. But he doesn’t fore see the team using them all. I don’t believe the team is just trying to save money. They know this takes 4-5 years. And a lot of draft picks won’t pan out. However, there’s enough picks over the next 3 years to get this rebuild done properly. In KDs words….. Even if that means using those future picks to acquire the right pieces. I have to believe at this point he just wants to do things right. He and his staff have a plan, he’s going to be very aggressive at the draft. He said so on JayZs show. I really could see the Hawks with 2 more first rounders. He will take on a bad contract or two. I would like to see him take on a deal that’s 3-4 years in length, to get a massive haul. But it sounds like he will go 2, maybe 3 if the player offers some help. But I think it sounds more like two. The rumours are as you pointed out. It sounds like Boeser and Myers. Hawks swap firsts with Van. KD clearly said he wants to weaponize the cap space. LA is looking to unload Arvidssons contract. So we’ll look to them too!!!

The only way Rocky dose not let Danny spend is if he is still ass hurt about being pushed aside when you make at least 40 mil a year the hawks stuff is chump change. I hope you guys are right and there is a way to get in the top 15 without giving up 19. I just think any GM would be a fool in this draft to trade away a top 15. As far as 4 year bad contracts Im not a fan of but if the return is substantial you would have to think about it. As far as OEL I hope they would do there homework on the player in 2 years it will be 98s Lockeroom and I think TJ and Dick can help the kid along just dont want him burdened with a bad egg, I have no idea if that is a fit for OEL or not. Should be the wildest off season we have seen from a buiding aspect gonna be fun.

Speculation out of Vancouver is that the Canucks might be willing to exchange the 11th pick for the 19th, provided the Hawks take on one of Garland, Boeser or Myers and give up one of their second round picks. Vancouver is looking to add a defenceman this draft and feel a good one would be available at pick 19 (though the top defender, Sandin-Pellica, is likely gone by pick 11). They also want to recoup picks they lost in trades last year. I have zero interest in Davidson adding yet another small winger in Garland. Myers also seems redundant unless the Hawks unload Murphy first. Boeser, however, is a good bounce-back candidate after a down year (and countless trade rumours). He is overpaid, but not by much, and the term is short. I would certainly consider taking him on for one of the later second round picks as part of that bigger deal. Interestingly, OEL's name was not mentioned by the Vancouver reporter. I like the cut of your jib here.

With the lack of size of our top 3 forwards (Bedard, Reichel and Nazar) - I've seen a lot of commentary on the need to add size. Matthew Wood and Samuel Honzek are two guys often suggested to be a guy the Hawks may target with pick #19. Below are a couple links showing both players. To say there is a noticeable difference in their skating is an understatement. Check out Wood's skating. Playing RW, right shot wearing #71 in the white. He's the youngest player in D1 but that won't effect his skating. www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9kLAxsZa_wNow watch another big guy's skating. Sam Honzek. Kid is in the red #29, left shot RW. Plays PK, PP and 1st line. All situations player. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_nAOUDcTKI

Another team to target is the Wild and their #21 pick, they still have to account for the buyouts of Suter and Parise and KD can look to cap salary someone from Wild and one of his #2 picks similar what he did last year with Toronto and Mrazek.
The Leafs have no 2nd picks for the next three years and we have their #1 in 2025 and they are at #28 maybe we take Brodie one year at $5M and then buyout Zaitsev.
I would be shocked if we actually draft the 4 picks in the second round. KD has put himself in excellent position yes the lottery luck did not hurt one bit, but now he needs to execute, draft, develop and stick to the plan.
This could be a defining moment in Hawks history that could set up for years of sustained success. It will already be to a degree with the pick of Bedard, but this could be one for the ages as the saying goes. Is the draft here yet.

In the later rounds KD should try and get Hanzel and Milic, both older players that were passed over before, it's worth a try in the later rounds.
Hanzel has good size, 6'1" 196lbs, and he looks good with Allan.
Milic is on the smaller side but he makes up for it with athleticism, poise, and how he tracks pucks.
Hopefully KD can get Hrabal with a late 1st or the 35th. Draft 2 goalies, 3 D and the rest forwards.
It's almost June 👍

I wouldn’t waste anything more than a 6 or 7 rounder on him. You never know. Reminds me of Dipietro from the Spitfires a few years back. He’s 6’ and very athletic. But I doubt he makes the NHL. Sometimes with the older kids, you get to see their development curve, so it’s like looking in to the future. Look at Xhekaj? He’s another, Shaw etc!!!

Way ahead of you guys re: protection for Bedard....
May 20, 2023 at 11:30pm Tater and vadarx like this QuoteEditlikePost Options #21Post by 2old4this on May 20, 2023 at 11:30pm IMHO, the Hawks should have a tough winger high on their wish list. Doesn't need to be a draft pick....UFA or trade works as well or better. Bedard will need somebody to persuade the opposition that roughing him isn't in their best interests. and if he can pot a few goals here and there, so much the better.
Next on my wish list is a 1A d-man. Might do better trading for him later.
And next, a big strong #2 center who's good on face-offs, or at least average.
And lots of forwards. The cupboard is bare. I wouldn't mind picking up Maxwell Domi again, if/when he becomes available. I also liked Lafferty. And a goalie or two. Can't wait 'til draft day!

Not sure he will be there at #19 Oliver Moore, center and best skater in draft, very good speed and his edgework is NHL elite caliber. We know KD values skating think Frank Nazar. Moore is committed to play with University of Minnesota, top tier college program and same school where Rinzel will be playing.

I said last year, that I’d have still given that pick to CBJs. Take my chances this year. Imagine CBJs having the Hawks 1st this year? I know many will disagree with this. But I choose Korchinski over Reinbacher mainly because KK has been brought up and developing in Canada. Austria is a far cry from a hockey powerhouse. The men he plays against are basically men, and not the most skilled. So it’s easier to look decent against men in the Swiss league. Also remember this. Reinbacher and KK are the same age. Just that Reinbacher is 4 months younger. And he had to wait to go back in the draft due to being born after Sept 15. So at the same age, I’d say KK is by far the better player. It’s just the truth!!!

Caps looking to move Mantha one more year with a cap of $5.7M. He is a big talented forward and could be a nice resurrection project and playing for new contract and Luke had some success with veterans like Doni, AA. I am sure the 8th overall pick is not in play but maybe 2nd round or future picks might be in play. Mantha as big as he is plays a soft game most of time, he does have skill and a wicked shot though.

There's another short video that came out this week on the NHL site with the scouts talking about players, no names were said but one scout said he's the most athletic goalie he's seen in a long time. I really hope he was talking about Hrabal.

The more I hear about Bonk the more I like him, his dad was well liked by his teammates and fans and Oliver will probably be the same, plus I'm sure his dad will be in the stands like other former NHLers, Domi and Tkachuk, could be beneficial having an ex player like him around the team.
6'2" 180lb right handed mobile dman who's good at both ends, 10g-30a in his first season in the OHL playing for the Hunters. 11a in 21 playoff games.
He's projected to go in the late first but he might be taken sooner, if the Hawks trade the 19th pick to Vancouver in a package for #11, KD can trade one of the 2nd and take on a contract to get a pick in the low 20s and take Bonk.
Then trade to get a pick in the late 1st and take Hrabal.
Bedard, Barlow, Bonk, and Hrabal covers all 3 positions. Just like the last rebuild when it looked like Tallon was drafting alphabetically, lots of Bs.
