Wanted a place to discuss possible candidates to win Calder this year. I know it is small sample size and I didn't watch a lot of other games yet, but from what I see so far Bedard and Soderblom are leading the race. I believe Soderblom is still qualified for it though he played last year . Other candidates are Cooley, Fantilli, who else?
Edit. Soderblom doesn't qualify, he played 2 games in 21-22 season

I would add Luke Hughes, Devils Dmen which some say in a few years might be the best of the Hughes brothers, including Jack. I have seen some love for Levi, the goalie for Sabres.. Matthew Knies, Leo Carlsonn & Tyson Foerster are some additional forwards.

Luke is a good call, although I think Hamilton will steal too many pp points from him to be a finalist.
I'll say Fantilli, Cooley, and Bedard are the finalists. i think the former two are in the best situations to put up offensive numbers. especially Cooley.

I think Cooley is the biggest threat to Bedard, even if he does not get the points, he will have some high-end highlights style points to help his candidacy. On Hughes in a couple of years he will be on contention for Norris trophies, although Maker may win like Niklas Lidstrom a bunch of them as long as he is healthy.

Bruins Poitras is a Calder possibility too.

At this point, it’s Bedards to lose. Bedard already has 5 points. Fantilli will struggle for the first 2 months, it’s a massive change of pace. That Carlsson kid, everyone says he’s the real deal. I just don’t see the offensive upside….. at all. Not even in a few years. And Cooley may be another desert dog looking for his game. They never get solid vets in there to help out. And the ones they do get, typically go there to party.
Buffalo doesn’t even play defense. So I don’t see how their tendy can win a Calder. Levi will not even be mentioned in January.
I’m sure they’ll be a dark horse that comes in and crushes it. It always happens. But this is Bedards time to shine. He’s already doing good. Gotta think he only gets better!!!

Power right now doesn’t look too good defensively. I’m sure he’ll get better. But right now the team plays no team defense and is trying to outscore their opponents. I know in theory that’s the name of the game. Sabres don’t care about keeping them out. Just watch last nights game vs a bad Habs team. You’ll see what I mean!!!

That’s likely not a good approach for Buffalo since they are light (IMO) on offensive scoring talent. Now if Kane goes there maybe it improves.

To me it’s like Buffalo’s whole team is trying to score instead of keeping them out. I heard on a podcast about a week ago. And I watched 2 Sabres games. That team does not play defense well at all!!!

The 'Joker' might be their best defensive D-man but his TOI is down from 21+ to under 16 this year.........the guys who score get the minutes up there and thier GT situation is still a mess.

Up 5-1 going into the 3rd and they allow three unanswered before Thompson put it away with an EN goal.

I hope the Sens can get off on a better note this year. They’re not having the start they should be. I think they have a quick trigger finger with DJ this year. I really hope he can get things straightened out there!!!

Considering Chicago has a brutal 8gms to start the season and Bedard is putting up points is a good sign, once he gets comfortable in the NHL and plays against lesser teams he should get some multiple point games and hopefully dominates certain teams.

Yotes are 3-3-0 with five road games and only one weak sister on their schedule so far ,a 2-1 win against the Ducks, they also beat the Devils in NJ. They'll be tough at home but yes......the weakest team the Hawks will face until they hit Nashville Nov 18th.

Anaheim topples the unbeaten Bruins tonight with Carlsson getting 1g &1a and playing almost 23 minutes. It really was a great draft.

I wasn't comparing him to Bedard, but Carlsson is a smart player and he'll put up good numbers while being a solid 2way center.

So much for my sleeper. Not that Grieg really had a Chance, but when he returns from injury in a few weeks.......he'll be suckin' 'hind-tit'! It was only 12 days ago but I think it's safe to say the kid's getting his legs under him. I don't think any of us expected much of a problem adjusting to the NHL for a young player so devoted to the game but he's still figuring things-out to some extent and will for a while yet. There was little doubt his 'shot' would translate immidiately and I've been careful to jump to conclusions but after what I've seen recently.......I have to say no doubt! Goaltenders look helpless! World-class defenders at times too! We did expect high-lite reels and no,high-lite reels alone won't get us there but I've been watching hockey a long time and to be honest,my jaw hasn't hit the floor in a long time.........it did twice yesterday! Effortlessly take the puck from the D-man and put a laser in an opening the size of a F'ing iPhone.........without looking.....what? His 2nd goal was what I meant by a good GT looking helpless and he saw it all the way.....didn't matter! It looks like his linemates are figured-out for now,Foligno's a tough vet who's having a resurgence and Kurashev might have found another level but Bedards's impact on his linemates will always 'up' their game. Put this young talent with an elite goal-scorer who can pass a bit too and a big, young, rugged winger on the other side who can do the heavy work and score some too and LOOK OUT! My only concern with Connor Bedard is,he has the ability to embarrass teams and teams don't like to be embarrassed, that Panther's game coulda gotten shitty if the Hawks were up by a few.

Great Bedard summary! I too was simply amazed yesterday by his quick and accurate shot even though I know that is supposed to be one of his primary skills. He did kind of taunt the crowd a bit and not sure what to make of that. Part of it I like because we have had so little to crow about for a couple of years now but you’re right - it could get old for some teams and they may want to “shut his yap” so to speak. Well - it will make for entertaining hockey games ahead!
