In a weird news, Washington Capitals is going to buy the site Capfriendly.
“ The Washington Capitals have moved to purchase the website CapFriendly, per Friedman. CapFriendly has become a central repository for information on NHL player and staff contracts, fantasy hockey tools, and lineup information among many other uses. The move will give Washington full access to CapFriendly’s extensive toolkit, though it will also force the site to publicly shut down on July 5th – keeping it active through the NHL Draft and beginning of free agency. Friedman shared that other NHL teams who had access to CapFriendly’s data were recently told their contracts would be terminated, suggesting a buyout was imminent.”

I use that site frequently. i'm sure a new site will jump in and fill the void, but this site might not be too bad. i'm sure you've heard of it. if you click on "capology" in the heading on top of the main page there's about a zillion answers to popular questions, definitions, explanations to rules, etc. sucks to have to get used to a whole new site but what to do? www.puckpedia.com/anyways....not that i needed it but another reason to dislike the caps.

Capfriendly, formerly Capgeek, was owned by someone else before. He had lots of contacts and did great research work. He then got sick with cancer and started to turn over all his work to the current owner. Who has done a good job since. I think this was about 8-10 years ago at most. I'll try to find a history of the site. EDIT: "CapFriendly came onto the scene in 2015 after CapGeek, created by Matthew Wuest, shut down. Wuest, who built an invaluable resource, passed away from colon cancer in March 2015. CapFriendly quickly became an excellent replacement for fans and media. Now it's gone and we're at the end of an era." Here's the article for the Quote. www.dailyhockeydose.com/nhl-team/washington-capitals/capfriendly-shutting-down-after-washington-capitals-purchase

first off, i'm moving posts from 2 other threads to here. it's that OCD thing of mine...
anyhoo...seems a bit odd how many teams apparently leaned so hard on that site.
i guess it's a testament how good the site was but still strange more teams wouldn't have their own data in place.

idk. should we as fans have access to player's salaries? bettman seems to think fans don't care about it. for a commissioner of a major sports league, the man is a more than a bit out of touch i reckon. CapFriendly filled the void, and was stellar. In fact, it was so detailed — with information clearly gleaned from teams and agents — that it sounds like several NHL teams more or less relied on it when doing business. Until the Washington Capitals decided to cut out the middleman, and buy it. The league won’t let it continue as a forward-facing site, so sometime in the next month or two CapFriendly, and all its detailed NHL contract information, will be gone.
Sure, someone like PuckPedia.com will probably fill the void, because there is a void to be filled. How well it replaces CapFriendly will be a question.
What won’t be a question is that the NHL won’t like it, because the NHL is a small town disguised as a $6.5-billion (U.S.) sports league. The league considers its salaries to be proprietary information, and more or less thinks fans should just watch the hockey, eh? Which is about as reductive a view of a sports league as you can imagine. You! Watch game! Buy tickets, hats, jerseys! No think! Be fan!
“We’re not getting a lot of feedback on (a Capgeek-style site),” said Gary Bettman in 2015. “It’s not something that seems to be driving fan interest as much as perhaps the interest of the (media) in this room, and your colleagues.
“GMs have access to information. The tools that we have for internal business use are different, but everything we do internally for business purposes doesn’t necessarily need to be made public and be the object of discussion.”www.thestar.com/sports/nhl/the-nhl-thinks-the-public-isnt-interested-in-players-salaries-maybe-they-should-talk-to/article_f3e06344-2829-11ef-b850-e7aa68893a2f.html

I don't get the tweet, what is meant by these teams "have something"? Does it mean they have something in place that they use instead of Capfriendly? Betteman is either full of shit or completely ignorant/out of touch -- neither would surprise me. I get the feeling he knows damn well that site is popular but he's lying publicly and pretending otherwise. "We're not getting much feedback" -- well, no shit, because he's not very accessible to fans, is he? It's not like he'd listen or care what fans have to say. I tend to think he's full of shit and doesn't know how else to answer the question, so he weaseled his way out (like usual) by pretending/suggesting that only the media finds that site useful.

I wonder if someone else will take up the mantle. you would think someone would see this as an opportunity, maybe another team will buy it!

i do believe she's finally a goner.
the "capfriendly" button along the top of the taskbar on the main page here gets you nowhere now. (people who are here solely on their phones likely won't see it anyways.)

The last time I checked CF,the Caps were 14M+ over the salary-cap and still 4M+ after they LTIR Backstrom at the start of the season.......maybe that's why they bought the site! A guy has to think other NHL GM's will have some resources available to track player contracts, signings and other movements like sports agencies, other GM's and the league itself, but CF's comprehensive,'one-stop shopping' approach was pretty F'n great and will be hard to replace.

besides puckpedia, this one just popped up. capwages.com/or more specifically to the blackhawks... capwages.com/teams/chicago_blackhawkstbh i never spent a lot of time on capfriendly, don't begrudge people that did but the whole dollars and cents of the game is way too much for my neanderthal brain. but at first glance this capwages site looks and feels quite a bit like the former CF site but i haven't really had a play on it yet.

I added Capwages link to the navigation bar.
Right click on it and choose new tab or it will take you from this page.

Now I finally realized why Caps bought capfriendly. They have the highest cap hit of 99M USD and did not want anyone else to know.
