hockey game (today/tonight/yesterday?) in melbourne australia. coyotes beat the kings 5-3. logan cooley with "bloody ripper, mate". (as they say in australia) x.com/Sportsnet/status/1705458974261158363?s=20could be one of the better calder races this year with CB, fantilli, cooley etc. and on a side note, i'm not quite ready to say the coyotes will be a playoff team but i bet they are one of the teams that improves the most this season. edit: first fight of the year. x.com/spittinchiclets/status/1705441720685527218?s=20Hockey has returned!! Agree on Yotes - there’s a lot of young talent there.

Calgary promoted assistant GM Craig Conroy to GM. He said he wants to make the team younger so there should be some UFAs hitting the market. on a side note here, there's nice story out of calgary. chris snow has been with the organization 13 years and was diagnosed with ALS in his 9th. against all odds he's still going strong with the flames 4 years later. now he's VP of analytics and asst. GM as well. his wife kelsie shares his story on twitter in some detail. it's quite a story that he manages to live the life he does despite the dire diagnosis initially. the disease seems to have robbed him of his smile (you never ever see his expression change in all the photos i've seen since he got the disease) but good to see him still living a good life with his family and having a good career. sad news out of calgary. The wife of Chris Snow says the Calgary Flames assistant general manager has suffered a "catastrophic" brain injury after going into cardiac arrest and is not expected to recover.
Kelsie Snow says on social media that her husband became unresponsive and suffered a heart attack on Tuesday.
She says paramedics and doctors were able to get his heart beating again, but he suffered a brain injury due to a lack of oxygen. She said his doctors do not expect him to wake up from the injury.
"My chest feels cracked open and hollowed out," Kelsie Snow wrote. "Chris is the most beautiful, brilliant person I'll ever know and doing life without him feels untenable."www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/chris-snow-brain-injury-1.6980037

Weird observation but of the 10 goals scored in tonight’s preseason games so far, 4 are by exHawks: Joker, Domi, Lafferty and Kubalik.

I watched some of the Sabres/Laffs game and it made me think that the Hawks lost a lot of team toughness just to Toronto. Lefferty, McCabe, Domi. All three would stand-up for any teammate. I hope there's still enough of that going forward.

Certainly the retaliation was well deserved. Agree - Vegas should again be one of the top teams.

Was motoring around some league stats for last year’s regular season and see Vegas had no one in the top 40 of scoring. They were 14th in team scoring and 22nd in goals against. They were 18th on the PP and 19th on the PK. They were 15th in shots taken per game and 20th in shots against. But - finished 4th in the league and of course won the cup. This doesn’t prove a thing other than I may have too much time on my hands but they got a lot of wins despite pedestrian team stats - at least in a number of measurable categories.

Exactly! I guess they “know how to win” and maybe it’s 6-5 or 1-0.

Saw Zegras signed a 3 year deal. He and Drysdale have been holding out and Drysdale still is.

Derek Stepan retires and I'm thinking it's a shame that he never played with Matteau. They just seemed like a perfect fit:
Stepan Matteau (step on my toe) 😆

His son is currently on a PTA with Columbus Stefan Matteau is an American professional ice hockey forward who is an unrestricted free agent. He is currently signed to a professional tryout agreement with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League. Matteau was born in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in Blainville, Quebec

Saw Zegras signed a 3 year deal. He and Drysdale have been holding out and Drysdale still is. Many teams are now wrapping-up their good, young players with max term deals after two quality years but the Ducks went with a 5.75MX3 bridge deal insted.....interesting. Scuttlebutt outta Anaheim is Drysdale, his camp and a few other players didn't like him being held-out at the end of the season even though he might have been ready to go after healing-up. Two more starts last year makes his RFA status 10.2 vs 10.2(c) after a real nice rookie year....... What is a 10.2(c) player? A player becomes a free agent when their contract expires on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract. A player who does not meet the UFA requirements or the Group 2 RFA requirements displayed in the table above, and has been issued a qualifying offer, is designated a 10.2(c) player. The player is only eligible to negotiate and sign a contract with the club that holds their signing rights. They are ineligible to negotiate a contract (offer sheet) with any other club. They are also ineligible for arbitration. If the player does not receive a qualifying offer by June 25th at 5:00pm ET, they immediately become a UFA. The Ducks will have over 37M in space next year, over 50M the following year and that's before BIG anticipated cap increases.........makes a guy wonder what they do intend to spend it on.

former hawks caleb jones (carolina) and ryan carpenter (san jose) both put on waivers.
also of note, spencer knight (waiver exempt) was sent to the minors and anthony stolarz will back up bobrovsky. sounds like it's just to get knight a lot of real game minutes in in the A and he'll be back with the panthers sooner than later. i hope he does good.
edit: looking at the list mr. veisor provided over in hawk talk, other former hawks include:
nylander, jujhar khaira, matthew highmore, alec regula, wyatt kalynuk, nic beaudin, drake caggiula, josh bailey (technically) and john hayden.

That was a clean hit, but surprised no one at least got in Oshie's face after it.
