i normally don't bitch that much about reffing. i only post this because of the similarity to what happened in the hawks/bruins game last night.
coincidental minors for kreider and greenway.
i guess they figure that the greenway "crosscheck" on kreider matches the kreider hit from behind on jokiharju, same as the instigator on dickinson equaled beecher's hit from behind on guttman.
maybe since nobody was hurt is why they evened out the penalties? i guess someone has to be helped off or stretchered off the ice for an extra minor or a major to be called.

He definitely raised that knee. werenski's done for the game...they're calling it a "quad contusion" which i'm guessing is better than a knee injury. but believe it or not sports medicine is not my strong suit.

Sens and Sabers both wrap-up their good, young players for MAX $$$ and term and the Ducks ground both of theirs into submission. Sanderson had a solid 4/32 debut @20 and Power also had a nice 4/35 debut himself @20 and they saw max deals for 8 and 8.3M respectively. Jamie Drysdale also had a solid 4/32 debut @20 but missed almost all of last year due to injury and has to hold-out to get 2.3MX3? Zegras had to hold-out to get his 5.75MX3 bridge deal too. Sharp contrast to how many other teams have dealt with their best, young players and not much of a commitment, but then again....they're not Verbeek's guys I guess. With the way the market's been going since the 2013 lockout I can see things going sideways 2 ways based on how the Sabers/Sens are trying to do it and the Ducks: GMs pay a shit-tonne of money to their young stars and give them max money and term, but they neglect the supporting cast. Team ends up going nowhere, they're too good to acquire talent via the draft and don't have the cap capital to pull in a good enough supporting cast: See also: Edmonton. GM's try to nickel and dime their young stars to death and go for bridge deals, only to find that they: (a) The players get offersheeted, and the GM pays anyway or loses good talent, (b) The players go to arbitration: same results. (c) The players wait and sign UFA deals for other teams, either forcing a very narrow window of a year or two, or they leave before the window opens. The smart GM's have to hit somewhere in the middle. Pay the players enough to stay but not too much that they can't bring in or keep the supporting cast.

This is where a crystal ball would come in handy!LOL! Commit a max deal to the 21/22yro coming off one or two good seasons with little sample size but the potential to improve even further or the 26/28yro hitting the UFA market for the first time with a proven sample size but a possibility of diminished performance due to age at the end of the deal? I'd have to say, every player and every draftee, signing or trade acquisition stands on his own and a proper combination of all three are required for a well built team IMO. NJ also wrapped up all of their young forwards long-term and D-man Luke Hughes will probably see a max deal when it's his turn too. A team full of young draftees sounds ideal but there are reasons few teams rosters consist of half or more of their own draftees,log-jams can occur in systems over-full of same age players vying for the same position or roster spot. Top notch development and many solid personnel decisions will be required in this instance. Trades are what you make of em but the draft capitol and cap-space available to the Hawks are weapons FEW teams possess now and some amount of both could be used to 'pluck' a few good, young players away from teams who can't afford em or don't have a spot for em. UFA's or trades for big-time players are what you make of em too,Vegas was widely criticized for 'selling the farm' to acquire big money guys Stone and Eichel but they raised a banner anyway the other night......doesn't happen w/o Stone and Eichel? Signing Pietrangelo was supposed to be a mistake too and I guess still could be with four years left at 33 but it helped lead to at least one cup.

The Cat with a PP goal for Wings. that jersey and that number seems a bit off but that wrist shot seems like it's business as usual. The trade went a long way to the tank effort that resulted in winning the lottery and also produced a very promising, young D-man but Bedard settin' up Debrincat every night woulda been SICK IMO.

Exactly, and this is where the GMs have to earn their paycheck. How do you get to that critical mass of homegrown talent, signee, and trade acquisitions without breaking the bank? You have to draft right. You have to know which superfluous draftees to move out for other established talent. You can't overpay for FA signings. THEN, you have to manage to keep the band together. Also, in some cases you have to try and mitigate roster damage that a previous GM inflicted. Not to mention systems and personnel, like you mentioned. It's going to be a fun ride...

I don't think many new GM's walk into desirable situations or else a new GM wouldn't be needed but there are varying degrees of desirability. The new guys in Toronto and Edmonton inherited very competitive teams that still need to take that important, final step. Some inherit middle of the pack teams and some inherit the annual bottom-feeder/tank teams too. The 'roster damage' left here was basically a depleted farm-system(unless Reichel,Kurashev,Vlasic and Phillips all really hit)but only one problematic contract in Seth Jones. That damaged roster also included six inherited players who were dealt for five 1st's,three 2nd's and a 3rd and a 4th with no sweetener to speak of necessary and the only $$$ retained was 2M on McCabe. TONS of cap space and a MOUNTAIN of high picks.......new GM's have inherited worse. Water under the bridge at this point but Strome,Kualik and Lankenin shoulda added to that mountain, these are not worthless players by any measure........their play last year bears this out!

I was actually meaning in GMs in general; not specifically about Kyle from Chicago. You're right in that few do walk into good situations. It is still something to contend with that adds to everything else. Plus, it is possible to inherit a team needing that "final step" and just not having the right assets, capabilities, or player availability to take that next step. Think Philly for a moment: The furthest they got in recent years was 2010--lost to us. Was there anything they could have done to take that "next step?" Same with a lot of teams who get "almost there" but didn't get a cup. The same could be said for Edmonton, Toronto, etc. Maybe they put it together for a dynasty like LA, Chicago, Pittsburgh. Maybe it just takes 1 fluke and McJesus/Draisaitl get a cup at long last (think Ovi/Washington), or maybe it never mateiralizes and they become an all-time great that never won it all (Lundqvist comes to mind as an example). I don't think any of those players you mentioned are "worthless" even though Strome annoyed me until his last season with the 'hawks. I think that falls into "know which players to keep and which to get assets for". Maybe Kyle from Chicago made a mistake in not keeping them; who knows?

Why TF would they change the draft format and keep the draftees and all of the 32 management groups separate? What TF would be gained?
