I thought at the time, the picks(1st and a 3rd)should have been enough for an 18 regular game rental of a 'one destination' player Fla had no intention of re-signing. Claude Giroux helped the Cats win the President's Trophy and their first PO round in a LONG time but the price was far too high...... www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/flyers-lock-up-owen-tippett-on-8-year-deal-amid-breakout-season/ar-BB1hj7YD?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=ed333a84fb8e465aa5d0cff0ba5c278e&ei=66 The young power forward had an uncommon blend of size, skill and SPEED that his offensive numbers didn't bare-out due to his role and more limited opportunities and I watched a LOT of Fla hockey back then. Teams do and will continue to move young players like Tippett because they have little choice and Philly has their power forward for the foreseeable future because they took advantage of this fact. MN also has their 21yro minute munching D-man,who came along with a 1st in the Fiala trade. The Jets also got two young 'beefy tostadas' in trade when they moved PLD,24yro 6'3" 216lb,#11 over-all,two-way center Vilardi is a beast already and will only get more beastly and 21yro 6'2" 201lb,#20 over-all,center Kupari could become the same, setting Winnipeg up at the position for years.

These are the type off deals/moves KD should be looking for. Instead of just taking draft capital only, look for young players "stuck", or not a good fit in current teams' system. Thompson now with Buffalo is another example of what hsbob if referring to above. The trade he made with Vancouver, getting a 2nd round pick and Dickinson is one of his better deals.

Dickinson was a nice get and a good example of a team with not enough space or opportunity for the large-framed forward. www.nhl.com/senators/video/steve-staios-midseason-report-6345576407112Ottawa can't 'sit pat' at the TDL with only 275K in cap-space and with their 2.7M back-up GT due to return from LTIR,at some point will have to clear space to do anything. I don't see the Hawks with interest in Tarasenko if the Sens become sellers but they've played better lately and might be looking to add veteran presence they have no cap-space for according to Staios. Kubalik's been a healthy scratch for three in a row now and they'd have to love lose his 2.5M,taking that contract would lessen any required sweetener required if we target one of their better young players. Pinto looks excited and ready in his first few back but 21yro center Ridley Grieg has played very well in his absence too, with Stutzle and Norris wrapped-up for big $$$,long-term and Giroux for a few more years, there's no way they can afford the luxury of keeping both young centers and Grieg will be cheaper for longer. Rumors have had Chychrun on the block and also have either him or Chabot on the move by summer. If there's interest in Chicago,Chychrun's the easy choice IMO,25 6'2" 210,skates like the wind, plays either side,on pace for his best season and has stayed healthy, playing em all so far. Signed for one more @4.6M before he becomes an UFA. They'd like to move the last four of Korpislo's 4M and would like to acquire a different vet GT,I don't know how or if that would work in some way but Korp's better than he's shown up there and he can always be flipped with a few $$$ retained if need be.

It also looks like Staois is dumping “old” players and contracts as if hes rebuilding the roster, so he might keep young players with team controlled cheap contracts in the roster. One player that KD might go for from them is Kastelic. 6’3 200 center that plays with an edge. Also 55% on draws.

I think 24yro Kastelic might have more to offer than we see in the 6-7,grinder minutes he gets there,he's fast for a big guy and I don't think it would take much arm-twisting to get him included in a deal. He does have an edge but he doesn't play like a buffoon at all and could grow with the younger players @24 and take some of the physical load off of Foligno. The immergence of 21yro center Ridley Grieg this year, along with Stutzle and Norris being wrapped-up long term and Giroux's a career center too, should make either one of Grieg or Pinto available. Pinto's gonna look for 3M plus if he plays well at all the rest of the way after signing for league minimum but Greig is signed for another year @863k and would definitely be cheaper for longer. The Sens don't have the luxury of enough cap-space for both young centers and they don't even have a spot for both unless one's gonna be a 4LC but they have a few of those too.

a snippet from a kirby dach interview a couple days ago.
how much would he have complained if we'd have left him in rockford for more than 3 games?
i see his point but i sense a strong feeling of entitlement coming from him.
the full interview here, although i haven't watched it yet.

Lotta Wings chatter a few pages back after a poor stretch of hockey but nothin' after a 9-2-1 January. A lot of those "third line forwards on a good team" are very good bottom-six forwards, playing good two-way hockey on a good team now,so I guess that was accurate.
Lalonde has stayed calm and consistant with this group and it's paying off, especially in their own end.
Dec Jan SV% .882(30th) .928(4th) GA/Game 4.27(32nd) 2.55(8th) Points 11(29th) 19(5th) with a chance for a 21 point month when they host the Sens Wed night.
Detroit ended last year with seven players with 10 or more goals, they already have ten players with 10 or more goals and could easily have 13-14 if Kane stays healthy. He's scheduled to start Wed along with Chiarot.
Who knows how long Alex Lyon can keep-up his 2.49/.942 pace but he's quiet and doesn't give-up a lotta rebounds......the D's been clearing the few he has given up. Lotta hockey left but the Wings can go into the break at a season-high 9 games over and in solid possession of a PO spot with a W Wed.

Still need to see what type of player Oliver Moore becomes and who we draft this year to fully evaluate the trade, but Tampa management and players are certainly not complaining.

What irked me after the trade was the Hawks had D-Cat, Strome and Raddysh. I don't think Colliton EVER put them out together on a line. Even though the 3 of them tore up juniors together after McDavid left.

One thing I’ve noticed is the LA Kings. I’ve pounded the drum that they did not rebuild properly. Trading for players that required HUGE contracts. Vilardi is better than PLD, plus the Jets got Iafalo, Kupari, and a 2nd round pick. They gave Fiala a boatload of money too. They should a stayed down for a couple more years and then made some moves.
Now LA has lost 15 of the last 17. More than likely a coaching change. And gotta think at this point Father Time has caught Kopitar. The kings simply do not have enough talent coming to ward off a full rebuild in a few years. What a waste of time. Not much on the D side as of now on the roster or in the system. This is why you gotta see it through. They did not!!!

The Wings will be in the same canoe soon enough. Didn’t see the rebuild through. I don’t think they’ll be bottom of the league. But they’ll stagnate soon enough. Like I said before. I give them 3-4 years of mediocre success, then they fall apart. I see what the Wings are doing is on par with Nashville. I don’t see much if any playoff success for them!!!

You make it sound like there's only one way to rebuild a team and we got the only guy who can do it. Detroit was a bad team for a long time and now they have several good, young players,a loaded system, all their draft picks and no problematic contracts to deal with........AND they're a competitive team. How did they not see their rebuild through? Acquiring 25yro D-Cat for the 1st they got from Boston for 28yro Bertuzzi? We'll see how the Yzer-plan ends-up but the guy ain't done and there's more kids ready and getting time in the A,and kids ready to replace them. We'll see how keepin' our fingers crossed for the #1 over-all every year works out too.

Remember a reporter asking him about Ovechkin and Crosby. His response was “they won a gawd dam lotto”. I’d say pretty much all Cup winning teams are built through the draft. Gotta get your stars there. Detroit will be competitive, but for how long? Is their system “loaded”? I don’t see many impact players coming. They’ll definitely have NHL players. But I don’t see it working out for more than a few years. And let’s say Kane leaves. I don’t see a player that can fill those skates. Time will tell. But just like the Kings, they didn’t see it through. Everyone here thought the Hawks should do what the Kings have done. Even Kane and Toews brought up the Kings. There wasn’t enough time to do that. The Wings will have to give their “stacked”‘system a shot. So I don’t see Dcat there for the long haul either. So hopefully they have a lot coming. Cuz a lot of contracts run out there in 2-3 years. I for one do not believe that making the playoffs is success. Winning a Cup is. I don’t see the Wings as a Cup contender now, or in 2 years!!!

Vegas did as much with Stone and Eichel, I have to believe that will be the case in detroit. the question is which players will they make that move for?

I see success as putting-up 100pts consistently and being able to win a few rounds more often than not,the great teams will be able to dig deep and reach the promised land. Edmonton and Toronto both got their elite players through good draft position and both are still waiting. LV traded for theirs's and won a cup. Buffalo and Ottawa have taken advantage of good draft position too and both also ended-up with elite, young players. There's no doubt that drafting a Kane and Toews or a Sid and Gino or a Stamkos and Hedman or a MacKinnon and Makar or a Dougty and Kopitar is a big advantage but the rest of those rosters were filled-out well too. Teams can't just rely on lottery luck either,Boston never drafts high but they drafted 'Pasta' at #25 and Marchand in the 3rd round and TB found Kucherov in the 2nd round and Point in the 3rd......no lottery luck needed. I'd understand your point of view if Detroit mortgaged the farm to become competitive but they've parted with no 1st round picks of their own and no prospects either.......their system is rated #4 in the league.... thehockeywriters.com/nhl-farm-system-rankings/And doesn't signing plyers like Compher,Copp and Perron short-term make more sense than long-term? The Wings don't have a single problematic contract. Why would D-Cat want to leave his hometown dream destination?
