Getting Broberg looks better now…but I’m not sad for the Blues. this was pretty much expected, I think. likely, at least partially, the reason for signing Broberg imo

Draisaitl, McDavid, Bouchard…there must be some chatter amongst themselves. “ I’ll sign if you sign” sort of thing. But if they win a cup this year maybe McDavid chases the money in a bigger market.

Jay said he should have asked for LD to take 12.5 LMFAO like its that easy just ask him to take less. Got me to thinking though if you want him to be a part of this I would assume his ask back was NMC. I would rather have him at 14 than at 12.5 with a NMC. Thoughts

Thoughts The absence of ANY clauses what soever and the rising cap make the AAV more manageable I guess BUT,it's the absence of any bonuses what soever that makes the term a bit less troubling for the soon to be 29yro. That absence of any bonuses will allow EDT to reasonably buy the player out in his late 30's if need be,the Hawks would not have the same reasonable option with S Jones due to the 44.25M in signing bonuses due him........ capwages.com/players/seth-jones (click 'buyout') l give DUMBASS his due here because clause-free/bonus-free,max contracts for star players are rare these days. Willie Nylander's new deal includes 8 years of a full NMC AND 69M of the 92M due him is in the form of signing bonuses..........he'll be 33 in 5yrs w/3yrs left@11.5M and more buy-out proof than S Jones!

Next year (2026): Edmonton has 9 FWDS signed, 5 D-men signed, and 2 goalies. 2.65M average each for a minimum of 4 roster players--at 2026 cap dollars. I still stand by my assertion that the window closes for Edmonton after this upcoming season, if they don't win it next year, I don't think they are going to because they are going to lose too much depth. Not to mention next season 6 of their roster FWDs, all 5 of their roster d-men, and one of their goalies are on the wrong side of 30.

I saw puckpedia reporting it, Sportskeeda or something like that which I think is about as fair and unbiasedbiased as MSNBC and Fox News, and I saw this..
Like I said: Draisaitl is the #2 guy for the Oil. I would be surprised if *any* GM didn't give him an NMC throughout. I would consider it a win for Bowman the Beancounter if any part of that deal was not a full-on NMC, and if the full thing is a full NMC, it wouldn't be a loss. He's a definite part of their core so a full NMC is not unexpected.

so much promise showed his rookie season here. 30 goals (26 even strength) in just 68 games while averaging only 14:22 minutes/game. he was 2nd in the league in even strength goals per 60 minutes of ice time at 1.61. he trailed only ovechkin who had 1.65. in the 2nd half of his season (final 34 games) when he was finally paired with better linemates, his even strength goals per 60 minutes rose to 2.04, again only trailing ovi's 2.35.
he'd throw a lot of big hits as well and played solid hockey both sides of the puck.
he was a 7th rounder that cost us a 5th rounder so someone in the organization saw the value in him. of course, the same organization let him go with zero return.
love jonny's reaction...

He was so good that first year when he got placed with Toews and Saad. A digger, a passer and a shooter. In that play in series against Edmonton that line was huge.

Jonathan Berggren has been a good soldier and he's been patient after a decent 15gl/28pt/67gm rookie debut in '22-23'. The 24yro watched his rebuilding team bring in a bunch of veteran forwards last year, resulting in only 12 NHL starts so he put his head down and had a nice year for Grand Rapids.......how much could he possibly want?

Right there with you. I don't think many GMs would have gotten much better of a contract in terms of AAV or clauses. Maybe they could be better about the bonuses or buyout-ability, and maybe a real savvy one could have done something where at the tail-end he has a M-NTC/NMC, but realistically Draisaitl is like Malkin, Toews (or Kane if you prefer ), or any other #2 of any other team's top-2 superstars. They are core franchise players and they will make bank and likely have a full-on NMC. That's not the surprising part. Cap may be a bit high and it will likely be an albatross at the end of it, but I do think the Legume-reckoner hamstrung himself by making it buyout-proof (as you eloquently put it), but moreover I think 2025 for the Oil has to be cup or bust. I don't see them being able to afford the depth beyond that--especially with Bowman the Beancounter at the helm; unless he learned that he's not the smartest guy in the room and Edmonton's scouting is bang-on for finding cheap players who play above their paygrade or a Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Hjammer/Buff-like deep draft prospects.

There biggest problem is not the pay for the 2 forwards its Nurse unless his game comes back but turning 30 during the season I doubt it.

Yzerman is notorious for getting good contracts, though.

To be fair,I concede the point of the contract being the 'going rate',I mentioned Nylander's similar contract structuring. It appears the player was willing to make NO concession what soever to help keep the rest of his team together, highest AAV in the league,MAX term @29,full NMC @29 and all but 8 million paid in signing bonuses. Could there have been any negotiating at all? What else could the player possibly have wanted?

Leon Draisaitl is one of the best offensive producers in the league,he has good size,he can play all three forward positions and he wins draws too(57% last year),and his two-way game was good through-out the Oil's Cop run. Moving a player of his caliber could shake an organization to it's core, that's why the Leafs extended Mathews and Nylander and will probable re-sign Marner too. The question I have is,will these two teams finally reach the summit by paying McD and Drai a combined 30 million or Mathews,Nylander and Marner a combined 36M plus?

It's possible but the windows are only open for a short period of time. You have to pay your franchise players even if they have not won it all, so that window is very small. You need the depth and everything else coming together. I could be wrong but I don't see the teams getting that critical mass of players playing above their pay grade unless the GM's get really lucky.

He was a soldier player who played like one, not a guy with the skill of a soldier but thought he was a general. The fact that he wasn't slotted properly just exposed the lack of depth which we had/have.

I still believe last year was designed to tank. They added a bit of help, but really not much. This year they added help. No doubt. And I think we all expect a much better result!!!
