I agree with the bolded - I'm just saying I don't think he's ready physically and my concern is he will be out physical'd which could result in him losing confidence and setting him back. If he gets some games and proves me wrong - great! He will not be 19 until June so he's young for his draft class. I watched Kaiser's first game tonight and he looked solid and ready to play in the NHL - including winning physical battles. He is 2 years older than Korchinski and although Kaiser skates well he isn't as gifted a skater as Korchinski - but he is stronger and better equipped to handle the physicality of the NHL at this time. I realize this is the Korchinski thread so I probably shouldn't be talking about other d-prospects - but after watching so many Seattle games I've really got a good appreciation for Nolan Allan. Allan has good size, skates pretty well and he is a tough SOB - really like the way he plays and I think he has a chance to find a job in the NHL. Korchinski is a few inches taller than Kaiser and he's almost 15lbs heavier, Kevin will be in the 190s after the next offseason, from what I've seen he seems pretty strong and with his elite skating and puck control he has a good chances of making the team next season.

Would love to get Dragicevic and hopefully Bedard or Fantilli in same draft. same here, but we are gonna need tb to lose in the first round or find someone else to give us a first that either misses the playoffs or loses in the first round to get him. guess we didn't need any help at all...and still didn't take him...

Should've taken Dragicevic over the Russian with the second pick in the 2nd. Hopefully he proves us wrong but it would've been nice getting a 6'2" right handed dman who's a PP specialist, like Bouchard. Him and Korchinski on the #1 PP would've been deadly.

We don't need to get all our picks in one round. I just took a look at next year's crop, and it is flooded with d-men, with many of them being right handed.

I’m gonna say Korchinski makes the team. I don’t believe he’ll start with a top role. But I believe he’ll start a number 6-7 dman to start. Luke is a guy who will make him earn his ice. I’m not one bit worried about killing a year of the ELC. It means nothing. It’s about his development. And I personally don’t see how going back to Jrs is going to make him better. Working out and practicing with NHLers and forming a bond with the other newcomers is the best way to go. It’s not about winning right now. Just get these kids acclimated to the NHL!!!

Going back to Jrs he can finally play top pair min. He can spend a year on the PK something that he has really never done. He can become a leader who is counted on to close out games. Im sorry but there just is not that much practice time once the season starts. He has things that can be worked on in juniors no need for him to up yet. The forming of the bond wont happen on the Hawks this season that will start next season. Just my 2 cents but good golly there is no rush.

I could see him sticking the whole way, but I think he gets 9 and they go from there. maybe have him practice with the team and then go to World's. when that is over, make the final decision. similar to Shane Wright this past season.

If he's ready, he's ready, we'll see how he does at training camp and I trust Luke will know.
And unlike the last coach, Luke won't put him on the top2 and expect him to play against top lines.
But if he goes back to Seattle he'll be their top dman and play in all situations, same with the World Juniors.

All Korchinski can do is make it tough on the front office to send him back to Seattle, that is all he can do, he has no control. He can be great in training camp and they still can send him back.
Personally another year in juniors and a shot to be a leader and play a prominent role at the world juniors is a great stepping stone to start his NHL career. Next year's Hawks team will only have possibly 3-5 players who will be there when the team starts to contend.
Not many 19 & 20 year old Dmen play right away. Look at Maker two years in college and he is doing ok. There is very little upside and a lot more downside to rush him now.

Last year Korchinski was one of the top 7 dmen in camp. He was better than a few that were there. I’m sure after a summer of getting stronger, he’ll be there. Most people look at someone else’s pathS like Makar for instance. Sure he did 2 years. But that was the kids choice. He wanted to stay. He was ready the year he was drafted. But certainly ready after one year. He wanted to return to college for a myriad of reasons. Don’t think Korchinski needs another year of playing over 85 games again. That is actually detrimental at this age. This is why him coming to the Hawks. Learning the pro game. Having a very long off season to get stronger again is the way to go. Even if he doesn’t play that much right now!!!

If he is one of the best 6 or 7 in camp then the Hawks have to make the decision as you outline, do we send him back for 85 games in junior and weigh the pros/cons of that or do we bring him along slowly and let him acclimate to pro hockey life. If they do decide to keep him even for the minimum 9 games the Hawks should sit down with him and lay out their expectations and their plan for him. This way Korchninski knows exactly what is expected and if he struggles, he does not lose confidence or effect the way he plays.

I've been outspoken that KK isn't quite ready for the NHL, that he has a couple areas he needs to improve before he is best prepared for the NHL game - specifically more strength to better handle one on one defensive battles and to improve his shot and his willingness to shoot.
The question is - is it better for him to work on those improvements in the WHL or NHL? The default answer would be WHL but a lot of the answer is based on something we can't see from the outside - and that's his emotional makeup. Is he the type to have his confidence crumble under the type of pressure he will have at the NHL level or is he a guy that will fight through the self doubts? To me - that is the crucial element to whether or not he could/should go back to the WHL.

Agree 1000%, you do not want to ruin the kid or take away any of his aggressiveness or the style of play that earned him the 7th overall pick. Hopefully he has battled adversity before, and he takes the challenge head on with confidence and is self-motivating who will use/see the opportunity as a learning experience. Hopefully the front office, his past coaches for sure and the Hawks coaches already either know the answer or have a pretty good idea how will handle the mental aspect of learning on the job.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised (and disappointed) if the Hawks coaches don't have a good handle on it and giving him those 9 games to start the season would be a test to support their opinion. I meant us fans sitting on the outside - we can't know his makeup and therefore can't know if it's a good plan to keep him in Chicago - so the default plan would probably be to err of the side of caution and send him back to the WHL.

For sure his previous coaches and the one in Seattle last year should be able to provide this and I am sure the scouts and front office has already had these types of discussions. For sure when they were interviewing him prior to the draft this line of questions surely came up. I mean that is the whole purpose of the interview to see what makes him "tick", the steak dinner is a bonus .

He has a chiseled jaw line now. And he used to have a really skinny neck, whereas now he looks like a man with a thicker neck. What I sure his skating will get quicker. I’m not really sold on the kid going back to Jrs to develop bad habits. Gotta think he’s gonna destroy the competition. Plus he’ll end up playing very late into the year again. And at this point I don’t think that’s the best thing for him. Same reasoning as to why Vlasic didn’t go to the Ice Hogs playoff run last year. He was injured and they wanted him to have a full offseason to recoup properly, and actually have a real offseason. I also believe he would be better off learning to be a pro. And by that I mean living the hockey life. A lot of kids don’t take it as serious as they can. Things are just too easy. They can and more than likely will send him to play for the WJC. We’re he’ll play a huge role. They did it for Dach. Teams do this all the time!!!

I understand the reasoning and purpose for the CHL/NHL rule about under 20's playing in the AHL and I agree with the rule - but maybe it would be better if something like 1 exception per team per 3 year period or something like that would be a good compromise. Having the AHL an an option for KK would be a good thing - even if he makes the Hawks out of camp and never looks back.

Sorry Guys, I got to disagree, remember he's 19 , growing into his bigger body, why chance him coming, we don't need him here , lots older we can try out, as far as him picking up bad habits, could happen , but I think a year as the #1 D on a team that should be in the playoffs next year, would do wonders for his confidence, plus the WJ's, great time to learn what the Hawks want him to work on ,I believe it would be a belter place to grow his game, I agree, if he jumps out and plays great, then we have to keep him, but even still he's 19 year old kid, wondering how many other 19 year old Dmen have made it, and made a difference, I think we are asking alot from him,

I understand both sides, but like you strongly leaning to another year in juniors and maybe captain of the WJ team.

I don’t think many are looking at the whole sample size. I fully understand that the last regime hurried guys and also gave them much too big of a role.
Boqvist was hurried. No doubt there. Then he was placed on the top line with an ever aging Duncan Keith. Didn’t work one bit.
With Dach, he really didn’t have much Jr experience either. A year and a bit. He needed another two years of Jrs to achieve his potential. They were ruined.
Henri Jokiharju. The joker. He was treated like shit here. He goes to Buffalo at 19/20 and absolutely fit in. He’s a mainstay there. He gained weight, and did everything needed to be a good young Dman.
Forsling. He’s one who was also thrown to the wolves here. He has really rebounded nicely. The last regime threw anyone they could at the fire, if they burned, so be it. It was a horrific way to run a team. The Hawks are still paying for it.
If the Hawks burn a year of Korchinski’s deal. So be it. His 2nd deal will come cheaper. He needs to earn his ice time and never ever touch top pairing minutes this year.
Heiskanen played at 19. He’s solid. I’m not anyway saying the kid is ready. If he is, he stays!!!

And Korchinski is a hard working humble kid who's the son of Saskatchewan farmers, he's ready to work. 6'3" 193lbs, probably high 190s come training camp, much different than a 6' 180lb Boqvist who had concussion problems.

The Bedard thread was hijacked by Korchinski! I'm trying to make all right in the universe again 😆
Reading what you guys have been debating on where he should be playing, I'd agree if he earns it in camp he should be with the Hawks to start the season. I agree he shouldn't be put on the first pairing, but on the other end of the discussion I don't like the idea of having him as a 7th defenseman. Also think he should be playing with a more experienced defenseman so it depends on whether the Hawks have both Murphy and Zaitsev on the roster. I'd be ok with 5/6 if Zaitsev is there but not with another rookie or Tinordi. I'd play him 3/4 with Murphy before I played him 5/6 with other defensemen with limited experience.

I'm trying to make all right in the universe again 😆 Reading what you guys have been debating on where he should be playing, I'd agree if he earns it in camp he should be with the Hawks to start the season. This will be the one we talk about during camp. After watching the Tbirds playoff run if I had to choose who was more NHL ready KK or Allen I would say Allen hands down. Like bigT has been saying its what spot is the best for his development. I am not a fan of teaching at the NHL level not a lot of time. But what happens if he goes back to juniors and get no pk time , and no heavy min at crunch time...For me I would like hawks to have a conversation with the Tbirds if he is not gonna get pk work end of game shut down role then sending him to jrS is a waste of time. If he will be doing these things then its a different story. JMO

So, there’s a great chance he’ll be traded. Which isn’t all that bad. Just that the team he’s dealt to is going to use him how they see fit. And the WHL is HUGE land wise. So if he was traded to Winnipeg. That’s a world away. Like very far. It’s tough to develop when you’ve got 2 week bus trips. Practice is not always the best due to random ice times. Does KK need another long Memorial Cup run? No. He needs to learn things. But he won’t be learning much as they lean on him for too many other things. A long playoff run is gruelling. The coaches won’t be playing him at the end of games. Or PK. He’d play half the game every night and burn out. I personally don’t see it as the best option. I’ve also known a kid that got traded this year and he was absolutely destroyed. Ethan Miedema. He was dating a buddy’s daughter. And I stopped by for a drink that night. I didn’t know he was part of the Shane Wright deal. And I seen him and he was destroyed. No ever sees that part of it. Everyone just sees the numbers side. I’m not saying KK would be destroyed, but sometimes a trade catches you off guard and doesn’t help your development. If he only had 2 years in. I’d say send him back just like I did with Dach. But he’s got almost 3 full years in, and one hell of a long playoff run. I think he’s ready!!!

T - you make a compelling argument and I know you come by your belief from lots of experience and knowledge so it's worth a lot. You've moved me to your side of the argument. I still believe KK has some improvements to make, as you do, but you've convinced me the best course of action for his development and long term future is to play with the Hawks next season.
