Given my immense respect for the unheralded checkers and grinders which complete any championship roster, I have never really warmed up to the idea of pedestalizing one player over any other.
A team needs 23 players all pulling in the same direction to be successful. I would prefer no numbers be retired and no statues be erected either. A display wall featuring photos of all the champions from each cup roster to my mind is much more appropriate.
Still, if the team is going down this road, I don't get why Hjalmarsson's number 4 is still active given the other numbers are not. Hjalmarsson was a key member of three cup rosters, and to my mind was at least as important as Sharp, Shaw, and Seabrook (and even Hossa). Given the difficult minutes played lining up against the opposition's best every night, he arguably was even more valuable than the others. Where do we draw a line here?

nothing mind blowing, but they had the yearly "why do the 'hawks players wear the number they do" article this morning on the Athletic and I thought this tidbit was interesting: "Then, there are team-specific numbers that aren’t permitted to be worn because they will likely be retired one day or belonged to a recent fan favorite. Duncan Keith’s 2, Jonathan Toews’ 19, Jeremy Roenick’s 27 and Patrick Kane’s 88 fall into the former category. As for the latter, Patrick Sharp’s 10, Corey Crawford’s 50 and Andrew Shaw’s 65 would be included. When new Blackhawks forward Ilya Mikheyev joined the team this offseason, he asked for 65, the number he had worn elsewhere, but he was asked if he wouldn’t mind wearing another number. He understood and obliged." seriously? no one can wear 65 right now? I guess I get 10 or 50 (but not really), but 65 shouldn't be blocked at all (imo)... Sharp was a very good complementary player, but not more so than Dennis Hull or Tony Amonte who also wore the number. Can’t retire every number. And Shaw? Nope. I don’t even get Chelios. He played more seasons in Detroit, two cups. Number 24 isn’t hanging at Little Ceasers. I agree that not every number can be retired. the chili man was a desperate move by the brass to try and drum up a little excitement last season, imo. that and they know they need to do something with the players from the 80s/90s before they start retiring numbers from The Run. Larmer, Wilson, and Roenick will be next. I'd imagine at least one of those is in the rafters by the end of next season.

Where do we draw a line here? here is a snippet from Jones from said article: "I asked for 4, and they were a little hesitant to give me that (because Niklas Hjalmarsson wore it). They got back to me probably a day later and said, “The only reason we’ll give you 4 is because you’re here long term,” and things like that. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t get 4." guess they don't plan on Mikheyev being around long term...

To me those are the ones who change the course of a franchise or become so ingrained that they become the face of the team, the ones that resonate even outside the sport to even the most casual fan. In the ‘60’s that was Hull, Mikita and Hall. In the ‘70’s maybe just Tony O. The ‘80’s brought Savard, Wilson and maybe Larmer. Next generation was Roenick. The current run will be Toews, Kane, Keith. If you’re retiring a number it should only be the cream but, like MVR said above, you should honour the entirety of the team another way.

I hope due to the Beach thing that the Wirtz’s don’t hold a grudge for the next 3 decades against the Cup winners. I’m really tired of the whole thing. But they should place the blame where it lies. On McDonough. Then let’s move on!!!

Another little bit. Turbo has been everything and then some. He and Bedard look wonderful together. They should be a lot of fun to watch all year.
On the other side of the coin. I sure hope Bertuzzi has a lot more to offer. Cuz right now, he’s in ECHL mode.
I thought TJ bounced back after that first game. He looks the part of a top 4. Martinez still has a lot to offer, but he’s just not a top pair D.
Mrazek is a stud. He may very well be top 3 in the league. And no, that’s not a joke!!!

He and Vlasic will be one of the better shut down pairs in the league. He was unlucky with the puck going off his leg and in. But I thought he boxed out well. And is still learning Lukes system. But I like the turnaround I’ve seen from game one. Even Murphy looked serviceable last night. And I rarely say that!!!

Bert got slightly better as the game wore on but he doesn't look as advertised. Doesn't seem a great fit on that line. Hall and Shevy seem to be finding some chemistry. Maybe time for Reichel to start in Calgary and drop Bert down a line. And I saw Brodie different than you. But I honestly can't see the Hawks doing changes after the win.

They blocked a shit ton of shots, and kept the Oilers, who love to toss the puck at the net and rush in, from some second chances so Mrazek could see things. Didn't help that the FO's were lopsided again. The Oilers won a lot of those because their wingers won the up for grabs loose pucks. Our guys should battle for those better.

here is an interview of Faulkner. nothing earth shattering, but some of it surely rubbed me the wrong way. Powers could've lobbied her a couple more softballs...
Jaime Faulkner was hired as Chicago Blackhawks president of business nearly four years ago. In her time, the Blackhawks have made several changes, from the TV broadcasting booth to how they sell their season tickets to their youth hockey initiatives.
Leading up to the Blackhawks’ home opener on Thursday, Faulkner discussed with The Athletic some of those changes, what lies ahead with the team’s centennial season, the impact Connor Bedard has had and much more.
(Note: Questions and answers have been lightly edited for clarity and length.)
It’s been nearly four years since you were hired. What impact do you think you have made?
I think one of the things I’m most proud of changing is that we’ve got an incredible leadership team here in place now, and that’s really helped change the culture at the Blackhawks. You have to have the right people to do the really great things you want to do for fans.
I think we’re really proud of the work we’ve done in protecting our season ticket holders and our most loyal fans, and that’s the lens we take on most business decisions that we make. Is it good for the fans first? If it is, we’ll make it work everywhere else. I think we’ve made a lot of good decisions in that area. Things like lowering season ticket prices for the first couple years I was here and capping season tickets so that our season ticket holders can maintain the value of what they’re buying. Making sure that we have tickets available for new fans who want to come in and watch the Blackhawks.
I think we’ve done all the right things for our most loyal customers, but also try to be as inclusive as possible bringing in all the new fans.
You were in Utah for the opener. What are you taking in from your position? How new organizations are entertaining fans and what they’re doing within their building?
I would say everywhere that we travel with the team, we are spending our time meeting with the leaderships of the other teams, sometimes not just the NHL clubs but the other clubs and teams in that market, really understanding best practices, what’s coming, what are the new ideas. And when we sit down for those games that night, in addition to obviously watching the Blackhawks play, we’re looking for any idea, things that seem to work with the crowd. What we can bring back to our events and experience team? So, we always have a learning mentality.
I think the team we have in place wakes up every day and thinks, “How do we make this better? How do we make it better for the fans? How do we deliver more for the fans?”
The most surprising thing in Utah was the number of times the video board showed somebody chugging beer.
It definitely felt like they were encouraging people to do that. I’ve noticed in the United Center that it seems the cameras pan off people who begin chugging their drink. Is that done purposely?
You’re very observant. It’s a conscious decision because we love to show our fans, but we want to show all of our different fans having a great time and what the vibe is at the United Center.
I will say, most of our fans are not chugging beers, and most of the fans in Utah were not chugging beers. As you know, most of them didn’t have beers in their hands.
Being the 30-year anniversary of the United Center, it seems like a building that has aged relatively well. From your perspective and going around the league to other stadiums, what’s your perception of the United Center? I know you’ve asked about adding cup holders a million times, but do you foresee future renovations?
I think we have one of the best, if not the best, operations team in North America. The reason that building looks so great is the care and attention that Terry Savarise and Joe Myhra, the leadership of the United Center, what their team puts into that building every day, and the investment, quite honestly, by the owners to ensure that it’s clean, that it has the best staff and that we keep up with it.
As we go look at what’s happening with other buildings across the country, whether it’s the renovations or the new builds, the focus is on more access to different types of premium. Our building, your options are really suites and maybe a membership to a club to your seats. Most buildings have a lot of different choices you can make to have more premium experiences. Then as it relates to their concourses, they’re bringing in food that is more street-worthy and they’re working on speed of service.
I know as we’re thinking of not only the 1901 project, we’re working on planning for the internal part of the United Center so that we can figure out what’s next. There are plans in place that we are working through right now to continue to improve what’s available to our fans coming to a Blackhawks game.
For fans who are coming on Thursday or any point this season, are there any changes they can expect this season?
I think one of the changes that will be fun is our broadcast studio is there and they will be live and it will be open to the atrium. We typically pack the atrium out before games, so having sort of a “College GameDay” environment there, we think, will add more energy to the atrium, and that will be a lot of fun.
As it relates to when you’re in your seats and you’re watching the game experience, we do have a couple new elements. One of the things our events and experiences team has done, as we’ve looked at other venues across the country, is what types of technology — so whether that’s sound, lighting, things like cryo, all the different sort of bells and whistles you can have — what are we missing?
What do we want to have to really elevate either typical moments in a game, the energy of the crowd or just getting people excited before puck drops? They have implemented some new things for this year, both lighting and sound-wise, which I think will be great for our fans.
The Milwaukee preseason games have seemed to be hits. Do you foresee future preseason games there or in other locations?
Milwaukee was definitely a hit. It did exactly what we wanted it to do, which was continue to bring hockey to an already deep fan base in Milwaukee and then continue to grow that fan base, and that’s why we do it. As it relates to taking it to other areas of the market, we’re definitely open to it. We won’t be doing that next year because it’s our centennial season, so our focus will be celebrating that next year. But as soon as we start planning for the year after that, we may consider whether we want to do another neutral-site game and whether that would be going back to Milwaukee or picking another location.
Would you consider televising IceHogs games on Chicago Sports Network (CHSN)?
We know this team is really fun to watch and we’d love for CHSN to be in a position where they can one day broadcast Rockford’s games as well.
I know you technically don’t have anything to do with CHSN’s negotiations, though fans have probably been expressing their frustrations with you. Is there any update you can give or any information that hasn’t been released so far that you might be able to provide fans at this point?
I get updates when the network gives us updates. I would say the end game is still the same. Our goal is to provide as many people the ability to watch this game as possible, but we’re not at the table negotiating these days. This is a much bigger thing and it’s being led by CHSN.
The Blackhawks have started on the road the last four seasons and had lengthy trips. Is that the NHL’s doing, or is it about the United Center accessibility or something else?
We’ve requested that from the league to open on the road. I think even (coach) Luke (Richardson) commented on this in his media availability. The reason is (that) he likes to start on the road, especially the last couple of years where we’ve had a different roster to start the year off. It gives the guys time to get to know each other better. They’re focused on the road. I think the net is that we request it on behalf of hockey. It also quite honestly gives us more time to ready for the home opener, which we like to do really big as well. It doesn’t mean the league will give it to us, but it is the request we put in every year.
With Connor Bedard entering his second season, do you envision a different way of marketing him or expanding his influence?
I would say that the requests for Connor have only gone up. They haven’t gone down since he started in his Year 2. We’ve been very careful and thoughtful in the things that we have him involved in.
It is still only his second year in the league. He needs to focus on doing hockey and he’s also doing a lot of his own things, which we love. So he’s going on Instagram live, some of the fun content that he’s doing with some of his own partners. We’re trying to be careful and thoughtful with him just like we are with all of our players on what they’re doing.
How have ticket sales, whether season or single game, gone so far for this season?
Well, we had a 97 percent renewal rate for season tickets, which is amazing. And then our single-game sales are very strong this year. We’ve sold more single tickets than we had last year. Season ticket holders are committed and the interest is high for single-game buyers to come to games. It’s higher than it was last year. We just continue to build on the excitement of the future of the team.
Have you capped off season tickets for any of the sections?
Yeah, 300 (section) is capped. 200 is close. I think we have a little bit left in 100.
Having just seen Gary Bettman in Utah and with the Winter Classic coming up, do you anticipate having any other marquee NHL games here or overseas in the near future?
We haven’t had any direct conversations with the league about that yet. But I would imagine we will be asked to participate in more NHL tentpole events in the future. We are not planning for next year, which is our centennial year. Again, the big celebration is celebrating at home with our fans the whole season.
Do you anticipate any jersey retirement ceremonies this season?
No, none for this season.
With the 10-year anniversary of the 2013 Stanley Cup team, you didn’t do anything to commemorate it and there was talk of it happening during the centennial season. Do you anticipate doing anything this season with the 2014-15 Cup-winning team or is that potentially something that will happen in the centennial season as well?
The plan is that we’re going to celebrate all of our Cup-winning teams in our centennial year.
What are those preparations like for the centennial?
Well, you begin preparing early. So we started planning our centennial over a year ago. Centennial celebrations will really kick off after the Winter Classic. That’s when we’ll start to announce things that will begin coming up. But a lot of planning has gone into it because obviously you have 100 years of incredible history to celebrate. A lot of work not only goes into planning the celebrations, but we’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple years re-establishing or strengthening relationships with our alumni, or as many alumni as we can get a hold of. We’ve been putting a lot of different types of effort into getting us ready for the party of the century.
Are there artifacts from the early days of the organization? I imagine the Hockey Hall of Fame has some of that. Is there a storage facility where you have older items? What’s the process like?
We actually have somebody on the staff with the Blackhawks whose job is authentics and archives. Their job is to wake up every day and go find our pieces of history and make sure we have the best relationships with anybody who wore a Blackhawks sweater.
We are finding the craziest things from fans appearing on random eBay shops to people calling us up now that they know we have this, saying I have XYZ, are you interested in that? So part of this two-year process has been finding pieces of our history, whether that’s stories, getting stories from fans or alumni, whether that’s getting an actual physical piece of something, whether that was Chicago Stadium or first check somebody got to the contract that was written on a napkin to just gear, getting some of our former alumni’s gear.

Warrior who had minimal offensive skills compared to Keith and Seabrook, masterfully did his job in the shadows - I don’t think he made an all star appearance, or am I forgetting. Number retirement seems to require that something REALLY special. He’s already in the Hall of The Really God Damned Good.”

That was actually a sticking point for Seth. He wanted #4 along with his over inflated contract, his 8 years and his NMC.
I believe you only give out the “big 3” to your franchise players. Seth is good, just not a franchise player. You get two of the three. Either term, Salary or Salary, NMC or NMC, Salary. Can’t give all three away to guys that aren’t the best in the org. Just stupid. Imagine if Seth elected the NMC and term. He took 8 million. It’s easier to swallow moving forward. Or if he took 9.5 and NMC. But got 6 years. Again, a better scenario. Let’s hope the new management is paying attention. Cuz when it comes to Bedard. I hope they don’t just throw 14 million at a kid that has never gotten 100 points or sniffed the playoffs. I think they should re-sign him this summer to an 8 year 10 million deal. I think that’s fair and will be fair for some time. His endorsements are gonna make him an extra 30-40 million in his life. Plus he’ll be eligible to sign another 8 year deal in his career. And he’ll get it. Probably for 16 million per. He’ll still make his quarter billion once it’s all said and done!!!

Vad thanks for the post of Powers story. Yeah you can tell Jaime is lying because her lips are moving. First the leadership in the front office I am hearing its worse than when McD was there as far as availability. Very select group get to talk to people and they better write it the right way if they want access. As far as the capped season tickets LMFAO. They consider a 5 game pack a season ticket holder guarantee if you wanted a full season ticket package right now you could get it. Celebrate all our cup teams there are no people around from before 2010 I am sure that will be mishandled. Now the best one she uses the Dollar Bill quote of protecting season ticket holders LOL! Also they are responsible for the cant watch mess they knew this was coming for 2 years shit the Avs could not even get a deal done with Comcast and thats a much better product.

Very small sample size but it’s encouraging. Hopefully he can keep it up. His first game this year was his 100th, in my fantasy league it means I can't put him on my minor team. So I thought I'd give him one more game and he got me 2.6pts, if he can maintain even half that he's being productive.
