54 years ago today Chicago Blackhawks claimed Tony Esposito for $25,000 in the NHL interleague draft. I do not believe claimed is correct maybe "stole" him is more appropriate. Tony O would win Calder as top rookie, Vézina as best goalie in 1969-70 for Chicago with a modern-day record 15 shutouts.
It is a shame the Hawks did not win a cup with Tony O 71-72 was close. One of the nicest guys you would have ever met.

That 12, 15, 20 dollars for a ticket back then might not get you a beer these days. Anyways...well done chicago fans.

In the old barn the seats were so tight you were going to have beer spilled on you too - whether from yourself or someone else. Might as well let loose and join the crowd!

Preceded by the ubiquitous cigar smell in the years preceding, probably.

I had season tickets for 1 year in Chicago Stadium in the Tessier era (either 83 or 84). Sat in the 2nd balcony and paid $6.00 per game. My aunt had season tickets there for over 20 years. She used to tell me her first game she ever went to was a Stanley Cup playoff game and the cost of the ticket was $.50. She took me to many games, including the game vs the Russians (my Mikita avatar is from that game with the ticket stub). The price of that 1st balcony ticket from January 7th, 1976 was $8.50.

I’m sure I made the 3 trips to the bathrooms each game which today would be 6 if I drank as much beer now as I did then! Yeah not the old barn’s best feature.

we all know the story about stan's about face when it came to time served in the penalty box. the 3 years before his first lady byng he averaged almost 120 minutes a season in penalty minutes. the next 2 seasons having won the LB twice in a row he averaged 13 minutes a season. to win those same 3 trophies in consecutive years is something. idk...maybe like me you thought the lady byng is not a trophy that is high on the list of coveted trophies among players, but they're almost all exclusively great players on the list of winners. records.nhl.com/awards/trophies/lady-byng-memorial-trophy

in the "around the league" thread, the question arose about the 5 father/son combos to play with the blackhawks. it's actually more history than current so better the answer goes here.
besides father michael nylander, son alex nylander, the other 4 father son combos with the blackhawks were:
father hank bassen, son bob bassen
father dave creighton, son adam creighton
father des smith, son gary smith
father pat stapleton, son mike stapleton

long time (and old time) montreal canadien howie morenz had a daughter who married bernie "boom boom" geoffrion. they had a son dan geoffrion, who in turn had a son named blake. so that's 4 generations...and they all had played with montreal at some point. the only 4 generation hockey family to date.

Great commercials there. I love how they snuck the Hansons in the Gatorade one.

This needs to go into a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now.
On this date in 2023, Connor Bedard began his HOF career by signing his 1st NHL contract.

Bobby Baun has died at 86. Won 2 memorial cups and 4 stanley cups. Of course his most famous goal was a playoff o/t winner, scored on a broken leg.

Amazing how they call ticky tack high sticks that are accidental brief loss of stick control and then probably let these go. Trouba gets praise for hitting guys who aren’t looking as hard as he can. I enjoy physical play but “lining up” guys to knock them out of the game just doesn’t do it for me.

Did he stay in the coaching game too long? Perhaps. But like it says, he did turn out to be a pretty good coach (and a good interview).

I suppose at one point i knew about some of these stats but they're mostly long since forgotten. Not sure if you'd say he was underrated or not but he sure was a good player back in the day.
