Unfortunately, I think it will be awhile before we realize we have the right guys in place for the developmental squad. I think cautious optimism is the right path. I will say this: I like what KD has put out better than what Stan has put out in terms of development. Is it on the hallowed Mike Smith/Dale Tallon level? Maybe not--I'm not sure and I don't think it will be until it's all over--like it was for Smith/Tallon. But I think we've started out in a good direction. There is still plenty of chances to screw the pooch along the way. How so? The Asst General Manager,Player Development Mark Eaton was hired by who again? I think Maciver was a good hire but Megan Hunter and Brian Campbell's promotions are still to be assessed. I dunno what can be relied on from his superiors or the other Assoc GM who came from MLB as far as development insight.....do you? Pure opinion/eye-test here. After 2015 Stan seemed to always be trying to getas many fill-in players to give the old core one more shot, as opposed to building the next core. Aside from Debrincat (who I think was handled decently), it felt like almost everyone else was mishandled in my opinion: - Joker seemed to do okay under Q, then he wasn't like by JC and not given another shot--mostly on JC. Ended up being moved for peanuts.
- Linking to the previous one, Stan/JC seemed to shove Nylander out there in hope he'd catch fire, until he was ultimately traded by KD.
- In my opinion, Boqvist wasn't handed that well. Ended up being moved.
- Neither was Beaudin.
- I think Mitchell wasn't handled that well either, and to be fair, I don't think KD did much with him either. I think he probably deserved more looks earlier.
- Sold low on Lehner for Subban, then ran with Lanks/Lehner. Probably should have had a mentor netminder in there.
- Dach was rushed.
- JC came off as a major SB crony. It feels (no proof, gut feeling) that the LR/KD relationship is less cronyism more that KD expects LR to be the head coach and not just a yes-man.
My opinion, of course. It just feels like Stan was never really serious about the next gen--even when it was obvious that the previous gen was aging out. It seemed like it was always about one more run, with the exception of Debrincat, Dach (who was rushed), and brining in Seth Jones on a franchise deal. It felt like everyone else was brought in not to be the next level of talent, but to augment the previous core.
I could be wrong, though.

I'm familiar with all the mistakes but at what time do we stop blaming the "old" or "aging" core who have all been booted.....ain't that good enough? I personally prefer "multi-cup winning champions" but that's just me....really,JUST me it seems. The only recent recollections of the era have mostly been about the failed cup-runs or the cap-damage done by the "multi-cup winning champions",when history shows many picks and prospects and a LOT of cap-space WAS available to improve the support for said players but only shit came in return........that's not the "old" and "aging" core's fault now is it? My comment on the development staff was that the same DUMBASS you referenced above is the guy who hired the guy who's still in charge of ours.

Maybe previous core is a better wording? The point was that at some point any winning teams core ages out and stops becoming the driver. Happened to us, is happening to Pittsburg, happened to LA, etc. At some point Tampa's core is not going to sustain them, same with Colorado's etc. Tony O and Stan Mikita aged out as well. Doesn't change all they've done. Ditto with TKKS. There was nothing negative reflected on the players of the previous core of themselves; I wasn't blaming them; I was blaming Stan for his handling of everyone who surrounded them. In my opinion, Stan held onto the concept of giving them one more shot at a cup run longer than he should have, instead of trying to build for the next squad. The same personnel might be there, but it seems to me that the decisions being called by KD and the decisions Stan made were different. Maybe Stan had to have his fingers in everything and didn't let his employees do their job? I don't know, but it's certainly not the first time a manager got promoted beyond their level of competence and tries to compensate by micromanaging. KD seems serious about getting the next gen going, something that Stan never seemed to serious about. Is that because he's smart? Or is it because he wants to clean house and make it his Bedard's team? I don't know.

The Tampa pick is officially #19. we've picked at 19 twice before. jean savard in 1977 and dimitri nabokov in 1995. for their careers, both centers combined for 18 goals, 25 assists in 98 nhl games. 3rd time lucky this time i hope.

Thanks a bunch for the clarification and YES,'Father Time' comes for all athletes, some later than others but he eventually shows up. Maybe the rebuild is some breakthrough vision but it seems everybody and their brother knew it was over-due,even the last guy announced his own 'youth movement' back in Sept of '20'........only to trade for S Jones and sign MAF nine months later........desperate times indeed. I still believe the higher-ups stepped in. YES,the rebuild should have started a few years ago but I'll still contend the team could have been much better with better support players in the 17-20 seasons. What if TT wasn't included in the Bickell trade(there had to be another way),what if some draft picks worked-out,15&16 saw no 1st round picks and D-Cat did fall to the team in 16 but the other 2nd's were Knott,Krys and Kayumov.....NO support there. 17&18 saw three 1st's(Joker,Boqvist and Beaudin)and Mitchell in the 2nd......almost zero support from the four. 2019 saw K&T both put-up career highs along with D-Cat and Strome and even Dunks was coming off a 40pt season and Gus had SIXTY(shoulda been trade then and there!). The team would also get a healthy Crawford back the following year, who put-up a .917 and was stellar in the 'Bubble' but split starts most of the year......more on that. Shouldn't the number of picks(two 2nd's for badly damaged Shaw) and prospects(Joker,Forsling,Forsberg and Kahun)traded-away and the 20+M that was available despite most of the big contracts still on the books have brought in a LOT of support for players coming off career years? Did it? ALL of that brought,DeHaan,Matta,Shaw,Lehner(CC was better.....and sane)Zach Smith for 3.5M to play in Rockford and our buddy NOlander. That massive amount of assets should have greatly improved any team but it turned out to be a disastrous squandering of those massive assets and offered those plyers coming off those great season very little to no support. The 'Nincompoop' behind the bench offered what support?

Shh ... no talk of Father Time ... I'm hiding in the barn and left a note on the front door stating I went downtown where my legs fell off. Don't tell anyone cuz it probably get back to the guy in the hoodie holding the scythe.

The 'Nincompoop' behind the bench offered what support? Again, speculation on my part, but it seems to me that Stan wanted his own system and believed his own hype. The stuff we got is the twilight of Bowman's reign was not really what we needed. As for the bolded, I honestly think if they did it right, the higher ups wouldn't have needed to, if they did. If they did do it that way then it's a deeper problem. Best we can hope for now is KD does it right. Keeping my fingers crossed. P.S. I agree that Crawford was better, but no one who plays goaltender is sane There's just varying degrees of insanity.

Bowman believed wrongly that the game had changed.
He said repeatedly that size no longer mattered, and he drafted accordingly, especially on defence. His scouts also concentrated much more on the college game than most teams.
College players play far fewer games than major junior/European players. I think this stunts their development.
Regardless, the system did not produce nearly enough NHL-talent (both elite and supporting cast).

"First to the puck" was the mantra back in '18' when undersized Boquvist was taken @#8 only to see it doubled-down on when even smaller Beaudin came @#27,average sized Joker came in the 1st and undersized Mitchell came in the 2nd the year before. Joker and Boquvist were Euro's who player CHL Jr's,Beaudin played CHL Jr's and only Mitchell played NCAA.......as did Makar and Q Hughes......both seem to have developed well. Now,if you're talking NCAA forwrds,DUMBASS couldn't draft enough of them!

IMHO, the Hawks should have a tough winger high on their wish list. Doesn't need to be a draft pick....UFA or trade works as well or better. Bedard will need somebody to persuade the opposition that roughing him isn't in their best interests. and if he can pot a few goals here and there, so much the better.
Next on my wish list is a 1A d-man. Might do better trading for him later.
And next, a big strong #2 center who's good on face-offs, or at least average.
And lots of forwards. The cupboard is bare. I wouldn't mind picking up Maxwell Domi again, if/when he becomes available. I also liked Lafferty. And a goalie or two. Can't wait 'til draft day!

And adding more top dmen wouldn't hurt, I'd like the Hawks to draft one of Dragicevic or Bonk in the first round, potential top2 dmen, or at least top4.

I'm gonna put this here, as it is all draft related. a few notes from a few articles on the Athletic today:
- Powers is saying the Blackhawks are not terribly optimistic about trading up from 19, as the cost is likely too much. most teams are not willing to drop down unless they are paid handsomely due to the strength of the draft. he did mention Vancouver, though, as a possibility...
- Rutherford cited Armstrong as willing to move down from one of their late firsts at the cost of a couple seconds. so, should there be someone there the 'hawks like at the end of the first, the blows might be a target to swap with...
- I've now see multiple mocks, including a 2 rounder today from Powers and Pronman, in which Dragicevic has dropped to the second round. concerns about his skating and other players having late season surges look to have pushed him out of the first round. he could be an option with our first 2nd rounder...
- speaking of that mock, Powers (they alternated picking and chose based on team needs vs their own preference) selected Daniil But @ 19. the other picks: Bradley Nadeau @ 35 (with Dragicevic going to SJ next @ 36), Kalan Lind @ 44, Mathieu Cataford @ 51, and Seattle Thunderbird Nico Myatovic @ 55. anyone wanna guess who they had us taking first OA? 😜

If But is there at 19. I’m taking the 6’5” 205 kid. I don’t believe he’s tied to Russia. Maybe for another year. Hawks will need size. And he seems to have that and skill. He seems to be closer to the NHL than most!!!

I'm gonna put this here, as it is all draft related. a few notes from a few articles on the Athletic today: - Powers is saying the Blackhawks are not terribly optimistic about trading up from 19, as the cost is likely too much. most teams are not willing to drop down unless they are paid handsomely due to the strength of the draft. he did mention Vancouver, though, as a possibility... 😜 Thanks Vad I like the option of staying at 19 there will be at least 2 or 3 real good players that will slip that far. look at all the mocks they are all over the place then if someone you like is at the end of first try to jump up and get him. EP draft guide comes out June 5th for anyone interested.

If But is there at 19. I’m taking the 6’5” 205 kid. I don’t believe he’s tied to Russia. Maybe for another year. Hawks will need size. And he seems to have that and skill. He seems to be closer to the NHL than most!!! Haven't seen him play other than a few clips which show him in a favorable light. I've read a couple things that raise a red flag for someone that would be taken at #19. The first is the catch phrase "for his size" - as in he skates well "for his size". That qualifier makes me think he isn't a great skater - only a great skater compared to most other big guys. The second thing I read was that he has a high center of gravity (long legs?) and is easily knocked off stride or knocked down, even by smaller guys. Are these concerns accurate? I don't know but I'd have to be convinced they're not true before I take him in the 1st round at #19. Later rounds? Yeah maybe.
