Jack Hughes is 5’11” and 175 and and he’s now playing against the top defenders and doing ok - better than ok actually. Aho at 176 and Kucherov at 181. I'm not worried about Bedards size, far from it. But considering he's either in the gym or playing hockey, you'd think he would've gained at least 1 pound since he was 16. He lost 5lbs of fat and added 6 lbs of muscle.

Pretty sure he’ll be north of 190 before he turns 20. It is a bit weird though to not gain from age 16.

Not to make a favorable or unfavorable comparison, just a recollection. I can remember saying several times that I thought D-Cat woulda been a real beast in the league if he had the type of size you're describing. No slight against the Cat,the kid made the league @19,averaged 34per over his first 6yrs and 4 different HC's and he's yet to miss a game to injury. Dam impressive for a player his size, down year or not. I don't know if Bedard will match D-Cat's first two year goal total w/o a Kane type player but it's the total package of skill-sets that has Bedard at the top of a great class. Like I said OTH,I remember saying "if this D-cat kid was just 5"11" 190lbs',he'd be a BEAST!".........Bedard will be at least that big when he fills-out! Bedard's a better skater and play-maker than DeBrincat was at the same age and that's also no slight either because Bedard's the most skilled kid to come along in years. The kid's a center and that's at the core of his value too,if he can win north of 40% at the dot to start and show some defensive responsibility to go along with his elite offensive skills..........he'd check a box or two......wouldn't he? Goals will come,he possesses an elite shot, the ability to get open and the skill to make the one-on-one play as well. Assists will come due to his passing, skating and on-ice vision but how many assists will depend on how many of his dishes get finished. To those more familiar with Connor Bedard's game,do we mostly see a dazzling, young plyer on the rush and cycle at first,or do we also see a solid fore-checker who can win a bord battle or go to the front.......do they want him doing much of the later with the other skills he has? Definitely no slight against Debrincat, he's a beast at 5'7" and always beat the odds. But yeah if he was a few inches taller and close to 190lbs he'd be an elite superstar, which he almost is. As for Bedard, the kid wants to win and will do anything to do it, which includes playing a strong defensive game, that really stood out at the World Juniors, plus he forechecks hard to get pucks and his ot goal versus Slovakia shows he's willing to go to the net. Or his record breaking goal going to the net and tapping in a perfect feed from Del Mastro, who was almost at the goal line. With his strength and low center of gravity I can see him being around 50% at faceoffs, but even above 45% would be OK with everything else he brings to the table. His elite offensive skills are widely known and I believe that part of his game translates well because it's natural and it comes easy to the kid but it's the other things you mention here than could make him a true superstar if they translate as well. I think it's fair to say that you and I both clamor for bigger forwards but I also think you and I both feel the size issue on Bedard needs to be 'put to bed! This kid will undoubtedly mature into a 5'11"+,195lb+ muscular and VERY athletic player. If I thought he was undersized,I'd say so......the kid's 17 for another month for God's sake.

run across this 2+ year old tweet, i thought it was worth a revisit.
bedard only played 15 games in his season as a 15 year old with regina, but he ended up at a 1.87 points/game clip.

A copy and paste from The Athletic. This time it's Wheeler who asked WHL GM's, coaches and players to tell him something about Bedard he doesn't know. Since some have wondered if he'll be a center in the NHL I liked reading the following. And if it's even possible this coach thinks Bedard is underrated!!!!
"Anonymous coach: He wants the puck all over the ice. It’s not like he just wants it off the rush. He wants the puck low, he wants the puck high, he wants it everywhere. And you just want the puck on his stick as much as possible, which is why I think he’s best as a centre. I think it would be wild to have him as a winger (in the NHL). And his competitiveness, I felt like that was something that people really undervalued. Like he’s chippy and he’ll self-govern himself. Like he’ll go after guys. People were taking full-blown runs at this kid and he’s throwing bigger reverse hits, he’s getting elbows up, and he’s right in the mix of things. I think it’s still underrated, even now."

There are some out there that just are looking to find flaws with Bedard or make "wild" opinions just to get noticed or clicks on their sites. Based on what I have seen, read and even several interviews with Bedard I have no worries about him been able to play even if he stays at his current height and weight, although I believe he will put on a few pounds. This kid wants to be the one of best, loves, thinks and sleeps hockey. He models his game after Crosby, a centermen.
What is going to happen if he does not score or get a point in his first game, I can see it now, should have drafted Fantilli, the bigger frame center.

Here in Edmonton their fans don't seem to think he'll even be good in the NHL, they keep saying he's small, yet they don't realize McDavid was only 8lbs heavier when he was drafted. I've been showing pics of Bedard at the combine and it shut a few of them up. And a coworker is certain he's gonna pull a Lindros and he said Bedard is cocky and has a big mouth, Oiler fans are extremely delusional. Bedard is humble and a team player.

KD gets a few more with that type of personality and we might have a winner sooner rather than later...

I think maybe just that he’s a normal kid. There’s nothing superhuman about him or anything like that. Everything he has gotten is from incredible amounts of hard work and passion. He’s just a super passionate, competitive, driven guy. You watch “The Last Dance” and you think of him as having that kind of drive and will to win. You watch him in the first round this year in the playoffs and he demonstrates that, you watch him in the world juniors, the bigger the game the bigger the moment and he always rises up. But a lot of people think he’s got some ability that’s genetic or born like that and it was all hard-earned and he has progressed every single year. So maybe just keeping in mind that he’s just a normal guy and anyone can do what he’s doing if they’re willing to sacrifice and put in as much work as he has.

as I said, a lot commented on his compete and physicality, but others commented on his personality, that he is a good guy, humble, hardworking, etc.
tbh, it seems like no one has a bad thing to say about him, particularly personality-wise.
me likey.

Personally, and being the rat bastard that I am, I think it's a bunch of people who look at this kid and everything he is, and compare it to their own lives, and then think they gotta pull him down to replenish their own self-esteem. You know the type--those who sit in their parent's basement wearing a bodily-fluid-stained a-neck T-shirt and make fun of people online.

With his elbows up, maybe channeling a little bit of "Mr. Howe." That would be just fine with me.

Nice article about the impact his family had, including his sister, who he spent 2 months with in Sweden. His drive, his competitiveness, determination to be the best, being a hard worker, first one the ice and last one off the ice. How he takes care of his body, eats right, the hard work he learned by simply following the lead of his parents, sister, and grandparents. His Dad the hardest-working person he knows, his Mom the glue to our family. This kid has a good head on his shoulders and is and will be special. www.nhl.com/news/projected-number-1-draft-pick-connor-bedard-fueled-by-family/c-344962570?tid=277764372

Scout's quote: "There are only so many superlatives you can use to describe Bedard before you start to feel redundant. He is as pure a goalscoring threat as I have ever seen come through the draft and he has the potential to be the next [Alex] Ovechkin-like figure where Rocket Richard trophies come by the bushel." - FCHockey chief Western scout Donesh Mazloum
