you ain't kidding. I was hoping once adidas was gone that actual authentic sweaters would be easy to get again. instead we get shitty fanatics sweaters for another decade probably and the only way to get one that isn't a piece of shit is gonna be via the team. and the 'hawks are not one of the few teams that actually order them and make the available to fans... I'll just go to Gunzo's and buy an old CCM blank one and have them add the name and number. lol, if it is an ultrafil, it might be cheaper to find a new on-ice sweater...

We also have to realize that if the Hawks get Bedard. They’re gonna more than likely bring in some decent vet help. Probably on the shorter term. Like 3-4 year deals. But they’ll have to spend a bit. Is Fantilli going to be ready? I don’t know what another year in the NCAA will do for him. He had 64 points in 35 games. He’s probably nhl ready too. So he’ll need someone to play with. I just don’t see what bringing back the duo will do!!! There is no reason why that "decent vet help...probably on the shorter term" could not be Toews and possibly Kane. If the Hawks do land Fantilli or Bedard (or Carlsson) who would be a better choice to play with short term than Patrick Kane? He does have that history of helping break in young players on his line (notably Panarin and Debrincat among others). To my mind, Toews is a much better choice than someone like Domi for the second/third line, if for no other reason than because the captain can slide into a checking role. I for one am now quite optimistic that one or both circles back and re-signs here short term over the summer at a very cap friendly deal. The UFA market for both players has pretty much evaporated. Neither will be able to command much salary or term. Clearly, most of the contenders are not interested, considering how Brisson failed to find a contract for Kane this spring. The Hawks are one of the few teams with real cap space to work with. If Chicago does land one of the very high picks, there could be an incentive for the players to return. I don't see either as a 'must' in any way or even necessary for a proper rebuild but I have to think a young, talented forward would appreciate a quality linemate or two. It comes down to what type of example the player would set for youngsters,on and off the ice and the veteran's willingness to teach and mentor IMO. You mentioned Kane's linemates,D-Cat and the Breadman are both very talented in their own right but both young wingers had a seamless transition to the league due in large part to playing with Kane. We've seen young forwards like Saad,Panik,Kubalik and Hagel transition well playing with Toews also. I still believe Toews' year away from the game was a set-back for Kirby Dach, certainly not as much as the injuries and being rushed were but I believe JT lamented the trade. I have to believe that either would completely 'buy-in' if they decide to return and I don't see how a 19 or 20yro wouldn't welcome their leadership. Like I said,I don't see either's return as necessary but I also don't see why someone would lead a media campaign against their return either.

The org was okay either way with the decision of T&K. It would have been malpractice not to at least look into the possibility of a trade. We were expecting a king's ransom which would have sped up the rebuild. Too bad T&K didn't waive last season or in the offseason. Hagel, DeBrincat, and even K Dach received a bigger return than Kane.
Whoever we draft will not be ready to put the team on their shoulders and lead us to glory. Leadership is needed and there is no better leader than Toews. His leadership would allow whoever we draft to devote all their time and effort to playing and working at their craft.
To those who worry about Toews and the 35+ contract I can only see him signing one year terms because of his health issues.

Toews has announced he will likely play next season for another hockey club. I thought he would wait to see who the Hawks get in the lottery/draft.

The only way JT does not re-sign is if he wants to play in the province where it all started. I can't remember management ever saying they didn't want 19 or88 back.

Dont want to answer for 2old but Popes article Sunday basically said unsure on retirement but if he comes back for another year it wont be with the Hawks. Ben has a pretty good rep with JT so I would say there is something to it.

Ben has a pretty good rep with JT so I would say there is something to it. did it, though? I don't recall a quote in there at all regarding not returning to the 'hawks, just that he is treating these last 2 homes games as his last in case that is what they end up being. he still thinks he can play. he also knows that he cannot, at least not in the way that he has grown accustomed to. he knows how much it will cost to continue playing at even a lesser than usual level in the 'chel. he has a decision to make and I am pretty sure he knows deep down what that decision is, he just hasn't accepted it yet, because the season is still going on. let's see how he feels about things after a few weeks off. a choice either way would not shock me.

He is still under contract and I have not heard anything about the team giving him permission to talk to other teams. The next move is up to KD.

July 1, Tazer can do what he likes. I believe this offseason comment was concerning whether or not he waived which was his right. It did not give him or his agent permission to negotiate a trade or a new contract with another team. There was no mention of him not being welcomed back if he wanted to return.

Confirmed. Toews will not be back. And I’m sure that goes for Kane too. End of an era. I personally believe Toews will retire. Once he takes a couple of weeks to go over everything, I think he just decides it’s best to just move on with his life after hockey.
It’s on NHL.com. Wouldn’t let me post it!!!

I would love to know the justification for not bringing him back if he decides not to retire, but at the same time I won't agree with it, so... fuck it.
at least he gets a proper send off tonight. that article reads an awful lot like KD thinks he isn't going to retire, but I am still going to hope that Jonny makes the smart choice and hangs em up.

Too early to call KD a moron in my mind, the garbage heap he was left was unenviable. Not bringing back Toews & Kane? While I appreciate that both could have some value if they buy into becoming mentors, do we have a template for future success where the club kept/brought back its aging stars during a rebuild? I guess running through historical SC champs and how they were built would be the play, but I need to brew some beer today. Can't slide down that online research rabbit hole! Toews' highlight reel for me is his rookie year crossover/inside out goal v. Colorado(?), his setup to Kane finish off the Kings in OT, and his pass through Chara's legs to set up Bickell.

I've liked a fair amount of what KD has done thus far, but I still feel it appropriate to label him as such in this situation. there is not one good reason to not bring Toews back if he wants to continue playing next season. he won't make them win too many games, he is great in the room and on the bench with the younger guys, and he can lead the rebuild for another year and allow the young guys to have less pressure on them while he talks to the media as the face of the team. I just don't get it, but I also believe Toews is going to retire, so I guess maybe they just wanted to put it out there so tonight can be a party.

I am hoping that this is the case and that he's mentally good with it, and that it IS a party tonight. Will sort of completely close that chapter of Hawks' history, at least its nostalgic now and not painful like 2015-2016 and 2016-2017.
