Thanks for the info. I’m not so sold on this now. More than likely we’ll pick 10th. Which is right where the rest of the league would want you to be!!!

I think Mohns wore #2, as he was originally a defenseman, but the Hawks put him on the wing with Mikita and Wharram.

i think of it as a win/win. if we lose against the oilers we have a 1 in 8 shot at the #1 pick. if we beat the oilers...well, we've beaten the oilers. : ) boy....if i was a wings or sens fan i'd be effn' choked today. I obviously as a bowman detractor want to, for the rare moment, see the Hawks advance to the next round. The last thing I want to see is bowman getting the #1 pick and succeeding, thus continuing on any longer in the position he has so miserably failed in.
And since I've been following the Tallon and Q led Panthers, I wouldn't mind seeing them lose in the qualifying round and getting a shot at that #1.
So this draft for me has really twisted my typical thought process completely. But if all were to go to my way of thinking, Bowman would then get shown the door sooner, the Panthers get the #1 pick, and I'll have 2 teams to root for moving forward, as I would once again be able to enjoy fully following the Hawks again! My only dilemma would then occur with head to head competition between the Hawks and Panthers, especially if they met in the Stanley Cup Final!
I share your disdain for Stanbo, just the thought of him still here turns my stomach but I still have to hope for the pick considering the player and also continue to hope SB gets the kick out the door he's deserved for years!

I wish we had a good GM that would trade a prospect or yewt to move up in the draft (if they end up with the tenth pick).
Throw in Sikura as a sweetener.

I think the fix is in. I don’t trust the NHL when it comes to the lotto. You ever play the lotto? It’s tough just to get your Dawe damn money back. Every year someone seems to win big, for the drama. The Hawks got scammed in 2004 and 05. We were either the worst team or the 2nd worst team and we lost on both years. Both generational talents to come out in consecutive years. We also missed out on Malkin in 04. Both the Pens and Capitals were for sale those years. Jim Balsaile tried to buy both teams in consecutive years. And both teams got the 1st overall to keep the teams put. It sucked the life outta the Hawks for another few years at least. I doubt we get it this year, I’m gonna say Arizona gets it. Gary and co are far behind in getting them a top pick. I think it’s just the order of things. If the Hawks do get it. I seriously have to wonder if the Bowman’s are a gawd damn mafia and have way too much sway in the league. No way the Hawks move up last year to 3 and now to 1!!!

"To be honest with you, not surprised," Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman said. "We had an 18.5 percent chance of winning the first pick. So realistically, I'm prepared to be sitting here today not talking about the first pick. I'm not really surprised. The bottom eight, or the eight playoff teams, had a 24.5 percent chance combined of getting the pick. So the odds were better that the first pick went to the bottom eight than it did us." (taken from NHL.com)
These are the comments from Yzerman regarding the draft. After finally reading a number of explanations of the draft workings, I think I finally understand what the situation will involve. Someone should explain to the Detroit GM that he should, maybe, enroll in a basic math course so he, too, can understand what the percentages were for each team to get the #1 choice. The choice given to the "E" team had only a 2.5% chance of being drawn, not the "24.5% combined, as Yzerman stated.
I'm surprised that someone on these boards had already picked up on his miscalculations and made a comment here. If he is the brain trust for the Wings, they are in for more lean years, in my opinion. Maybe he was just whining and trying to make a case for the "poor ole Wings," and how they were mistreated by the "mean ole NHL."

of the literally dozens of jeff shantz hi-lite reel goals on YT...i'm guessing it was this one? That was it! Thanks again GT! Funny, when I saw Shantz on the list of #11's, this goal immediately came to mind. He was a classic underachiever.

Yzerman is one to never ever speak out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get the 1st pick next year. I’m sure Yzerman wasn’t saying exactly that behind the scenes. Same goes for Pierre Dorion. Anyone see the photos of him right after or his little presser? He said the right things but looked ever so pissed!!!

here's a question for the board:
the 'hawks lose to the Oil and win the draw for the #1 pick. Ottawa offers 3 and 5 for #1. do you take the deal or do you take Lafreniere?

here's a question for the board: the 'hawks lose to the Oil and win the draw for the #1 pick. Ottawa offers 3 and 5 for #1. do you take the deal or do you take Lafreniere? Unless there’s a clear number one who’s head and shoulders above the rest of the class, it probably would work out. Think Jersey would trade Hischier for Heiskanen and Pettersson? Or Hughes for Dach and Turcotte? In a heartbeat I’m thinking. Or would Edmonton trade RNH for Huberdeau and Strome? Probably. Now if you have a McDavid, MacKinnon or maybe a Mathews it’s more clear cut. But to make that tradeYou have to draft the right people, lots of misses in those top five. A truly desperate team might do that trade for Lafrenierre, but he’s about as sure a player as you’ll see in this draft.

I'm going to hold off answering until there's a few more respondents and then just cherry pick some of the best points. Kidding aside I think i'd take 3 + 5 for 1, but i could flip flop on that pretty easily. It'd be a dandy problem to have, though. Edit: btw...happy belated Canada day to my fellow compatriots here on these boards.

here's a question for the board: the 'hawks lose to the Oil and win the draw for the #1 pick. Ottawa offers 3 and 5 for #1. do you take the deal or do you take Lafreniere? I would say no. I believe there is quality after Lafreniere, but not his type of quality. Now. If Ottawa offered 3-5- and their other first rounder, I’d have to think long. It wouldn’t hurt Ottawa cuz they have like 3 2nd rounders this year. So if Ottawa has the 1st overall and 3 2nd rounders to boot, it’s a win win for them. As for Chicago. To have 3 first rounders and 2 of those in the top 5 is the way to rebuild and fast. I’d try and take the left over of Stutzle and Byfield. Then I’d take either Drysdale or Perfetti. With the last pick they had (Islanders), it’ll probably be a 15-22 pick. I’d take Askarov if he was there, or I’d take one of Seth Jarvis or Quinn, Halloway or Perrault. Then we could rebuild much quicker. To have those 3 from this year, and to have Dach, Mitchell, Boqvist, Dcat. I’d think the rebuild would be right on target. We’d be good again in a few years with drafts like that. Plus it also gives us options to trade Boqvist as Drysdale is a superior player and right shot. So we could fill other holes on the roster that way. To have Drysdale, Carlsson, Mitchell, Beaudin is a great start!!!

But there’s a lot of others, Gudbranson, Neidereiter, Barker, Alzner, Bennett, that never lived up to their hype. So if you’re playing the “would you game” it would have to be a pretty blah draft at the top before you might want to do what Vadarx was postulating.

good answers, all.
I go back and forth on it, honestly. Lafreniere seems like the surest bet in this class, but at the same time he doesn't seem like McDavid or Matthews. he is also a winger.
as I said before, if Ottawa gave up another pick, like their own second rounder this year or next, I probably do it. for only 3 and 5, I probably wouldn't.

All is true , but the 2 time's I've seen, Lafreniere live, he did what he wanted ,it was like lindros in Jr, , granted it was the Q, not a in your face league like the WHL, and at the WJ's, he was great also , he could turn out to be something special I don't really think their is a wrong answer, unless we put this in a bottle for 20 then look at it ,lol

He plays a very physical game. I watched every game a couple years ago at the Hlinka/Gretzky tourney. I posted at the old boards how awesome this 16 year old was playing against 17 year olds. He totally dominated everyone. Even Jack Hughes and the litany or kids in the US team that had many many kids get drafted last year from that US team. Not many 16 year olds make the under 17s, and not many make the WJC squad, and he did. He dominated this year as a 17 year old at the WJC. He’s the real deal. He’s kinda like Toews with a lot of Kane in him. Perfetti dominated the under 17 tourney last summer too. I know the kid, and his parents. I’ve seen him live many times, he’s one that I would take. They live in Whitby, which is right next door to Oshawa. My buddy used to play for Oshawa and knows the Perfetti’s as they are billets and take in players from out of town. So I got introduced to them, and we got to know Cole pretty good. He’s really good with our kids and takes time out for them whenever he’s in town. Plus the some of a beech puts up 4 points almost every time he’s in Windsor. Perfetti is another player I’d keep my eye on. I posted pics of him with my boy on here a few times too. Kid is very good, not as good as Lafreniere, but still very good!!!

Out of curiosity, who are the misses? I’m thinking about misses in the context of the “would you” game. Guys like Puljujarvi, Yakapov, Hickey, Dal Colle and Reinhart look like pretty big whiffs. Jury is still out on a guy like Juelevi. But there’s a lot of others, Gudbranson, Neidereiter, Barker, Alzner, Bennett, that never lived up to their hype. So if you’re playing the “would you game” it would have to be a pretty blah draft at the top before you might want to do what Vadarx was postulating. Of course there's been plenty of misses but your post made it sound like you considered Hischier a miss, he has 136pts in his first 209gms for a weak team(Palmieri led w/45pts) he had a 51.7FO% and wears an A at 21. I like the bigger Dach but Hughes had one fewer goal in three fewer games and was slightly better at the dot but both sucked. I doubt NJ's lookin to move the 19yro in a "heartbeat" or any other way. Some kids take a year or two and our own Dach might be one. I also doubt a mid-season coaching change helped either youngster either.

But I doubt he’s on the level of other 1st overalls. Hischer is ok, he’s starting to come around. But I think he’s reached his potential already. I believe Hughes will be like him and follow the same trajectory. Last year was the year to trade away a first overall if you ever were to do that. I think Zegras will be as good as Hughes. Last years draft just didn’t have the high end talent that this years does. Byfield is 6’4” and is a scoring machine, and he’s not even in the conversation for first overall. He’d be first in any other year. So that means the talent keeps getting pushed further and further down the list. That’s what makes a very deep draft. A lot of guys at the top end of the first round are sure fire NHLers. So the misses I believe are due to just bad draft classes. It happens. Many years are very lean on guys making the NHL. Then a draft class like this years comes up and it’s great to see. This is why I think Ottawa shouldn’t trade up for the 1st overall. There 2 picks in the top 5 may end up being great players. Probably not as good as Lafreniere, but they can still rebuild a team with the two and be better off by having 2 holes plugged!!!

Vadarx asked about swapping a #1 for a #3 and #5 if Lafrenierre fell to us. I’m saying unless the top guy is generational most teams would consider it. If I was the Jersey G.M. and I could swap that first pick Hischier knowing you could get Heiskanen and Pettersson at 3 and 5? Done deal.
