Both K and T publicly voiced skepticism over being with a rebuilding team and I can’t blame them. I take both of them at face value in terms of appearing slow to decide on what they wanted to do. I believe they didn’t really know and were mulling over their options. Not everyone instantly knows what their next career move is going to be.

Kaner with surgery today and out 4-6 months. in case anyone wanted to know. Glad he’s addressing it as it clearly has been bugging him this past season and maybe before that too. I guess it’s the same hip resurfacing surgery that Backstrom had. Same draft but Kaner has had more mileage with deeper playoff runs although Bäckström played center - so maybe it equals out.

I detailed story regarding the surgery. Says the procedure was an alternative option to hip replacement, so it had to be really bad:
Patrick Kane will be shelved four to six months after undergoing a hip resurfacing procedure, his agent said Thursday.
Pat Brisson told reporters that Kane had the surgery Thursday and that the 34-year-old still "wants to play for a long time."
Kane played out the final 19 games of an eight-year, $84 million deal with the New York Rangers last season. The Rangers acquired Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 28. Kane had played all 1,161 games in a Blackhawks sweater prior to the trade.
Brisson expects Kane to make a full recovery. It was not immediately clear how the surgery impacts Kane's impending free agency, though Brisson said they would consider options if the prolific winger does not have a contract on July 1.
The priority, Brisson said, is that the surgery was successful.
Kane tallied 12 points for the Rangers and just 57 overall, his lowest output since 2012-13. Kane is a nine-time All-Star and three-time Stanley Cup winner, all with the Blackhawks, who selected him No. 1 overall in the 2007 draft.
Kane has also won the Calder, Smythe, Hart, Pearson and Ross trophies in his career. He won the Hart as MVP of the 2015-16 season.
He has 1,237 points (451 goals, 786 assists) in his 16-year career.
Hip resurfacing is an alternative to hip replacement. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, "the femoral head is not removed, but is instead trimmed and capped with a smooth metal covering" in hip resurfacing.

The decent thing for Hawk management to do would be to offer him a place to play next year after the surgery.
Of course, this won't happen. But it should.
The track record for players recovering from this kind of surgery is small and not good. We now know why he was delaying it for as long as he could.

I’m sure he’ll give it a go. Not sure it’ll work out that great. If it is basically the end of the line, what a career he’s had. Can’t argue his hall of fame status. I hope it goes well. But I don’t think he’ll get faster and stronger at 35 when he returns. I’m sure he’ll be pain free, but the young kids rule this game. Gonna be tough to make it back now!!!

I doubt the surgery or age will impact his ability to distribute the puck to some of those young kids. He may lose a little speed, but that shouldn't hurt his productivity too much.

Sounds almost like a Zamboni application (resurfacing) to the hip. Hope it all goes well and he can recover and play hockey again, wherever that may take him.

Resurfacing vs. complete replacement…pretty amazing but he should be happy he can still golf. Attachments:

Not sure how he looked but was at ~.5 pts/game over the last 39. Hoping to see Kaner somewhere next season. And if not, hoping he can adjust to the regular life the rest of us have led and enjoy time with family as he decides what’s next in life.

Well, as far as coming back from that surgery.. I think it’s very possible, one thing we know for sure he doesn’t play a rough and tumble game, really never gets rocked because he’s very seldom in position to get hammered. He’s always had a way of staying away from that. I think with the technology and rehabilitation techniques and knowledge they have today will definitely benefit him.. it’s very possible for him to comeback physically, I think the bottom line is .. “if he has it in his heart”. He’s a millionaire has 3 cups, has won and done just about everything in the game. Not to many players have had a career like he’s had. I think it will come down to if he’s ready to leave the game. One thing I’d like to see him do is notch the 500 goal mark.

Patty Sharp had the same thing at pretty much the same age. Sharpy said it didn’t help his career, but it vastly improved his days to day living. So gotta think the odds are stacked against him.
I for one hope he makes it back and breaks Modano’s or I guess Hulls record. I don’t like the “American Born” deal. Then there’s Brett Hull sitting there on top. I’d love to see Kaner get it.
If he makes it back. And is able to play. I won’t doubt him. He’ll crush that record. If he comes back and struggles with mobility, I think it’ll be short lived like Sharp!!!

Quick question: Did Brad Marchand have a different type of hip surgery? He seemed to come back and play well and is actually about 5–6-months older than Kane. He actually played more minutes in the playoffs too.

Awesome to see that. My ex, the Oiler fan lol, had hip resurfacing when we lived together, she was ecstatic they never had to do a replacement because that meant no more soccer or jogging. Glad Kane finally took care of it and hopefully he plays till he's 40. Maybe he'll end his career here so he can have a playoff run with Bedard and the new core.

Rumors are the Stars wants to sign him to multi yr contract, but have to move salary out. Theyre looking to trade out Mason Marchment.
Im guessing this could be like a Pavelski-type acquisition that worked out well for them

Im guessing this could be like a Pavelski-type acquisition that worked out well for them PK either has made a quicker than normal recovery or dallas is banking on it happening. especially if they're looking multi-year. as was said earlier in this thread, surgery was on june 2nd and 4-6 month recovery time. i hope he signs somewhere, same as jonny. the league's much better with them in it.

Also Sharp - if asked - would speak highly of the Stars.

One thing is for sure. If Kane is to sign a multi year deal. The Stars more than likely want it done by his 35th bday. So I’d think by beginning of training camp (3 months in for Kane) he will know if he’s going to play.
He can be put on injured reserve till November when he’s ready to come back. I think Dallas will sign him to a 3 year 15 million deal!!!

seems to bode well for 88 chasing the American points record. Not quite ready for the rocking' chair it appears and I don't think he or JT are ready to ride off into oblivion yet,as convenient as it would be. Health willing,I'm sure both feel they still have something left and something left to prove. Kopitar and Doughty will finish their careers as Kings,Crosby,Malkin and Letang will finish their careers as Penguins and Ovi will retire a Capitol and rightly so in every instance! I also expect a few of Tampa's great players to do the same but the fact remains, not a single multi cup winning Hawk's player officially ended up in Chicago. Hossa,Seabs and Crawford never played for another team afterward but all either had their contracts moved or in Crawford's case......just kicked to the curb. 'Big Hoss' had a MUCH deserved jersey retirement night but I wouldn't look for another one any time soon, cause we're moving' on. I believe this will come down on ownership when it's all said and done, it's their brand to protect. NO one should expect some backward baseball cap wearin' GM to respect the team's legacy and heritage.
