Would anyone else feel out Lankinen's camp NOW for a reasonable two year extension? He is an UFA next summer which will find the team without a NHL goaltender under contract.

I think Kane and El Gato need to be together for sure. Our best set-up man with our best finisher. For the center position I think the 'hawks need some flexibility before they settle. Toews should have the inside track but I think Strome might see some time there because Stan, and I think we might want to see if Dach can work in that role to build him for the future. We might also check out Johnson there as well. Plus, one of them might show some chemistry with Koob, and that has to be considered as well. I don't think the 'hawks have the right kind of FWD depth to be effective spreading out the scoring. I could be wrong though. JT and Kubalik had chemistry in spades and it sounds more n more like JT's ready. Do you really see JC ever giving Strome a look at 1LC or any LC for that matter? Maybe Strome is insurance in case JT ain't ready but JT wasn't ready last year and Strome never sniffed 1LC.....3rd line wing was more like it. With Dach having plenty of time to heal, veteran Johnson added, prospect Borgstrom added and Carpenter familiar with the system and reliable, where does Strome find a spot? If he doesn't find a regular spot, what's his trade value then? I see Stan trying to justify acquiring Strome. Truthfully I hope he goes but I think Strome might have this year left before Stan sells low on him.

I wouldn't be against the idea, but I'd be leery of anything over 2.5M. We're looking at Lankinen's .909 to Crawford's .914 when Crawford was extended to ~4.5% (2.667M) of the cap back in 2011. I think there's potential in Lanks but I wouldn't be betting the farm on him at this point.

I like Strome more than most but I still don't see a spot on this team with this HC.

Plus Q as the coach, the Hawks didn't allow the 2nd most shots against back then, especially high quality shots. But yeah he should be re-signed before this season, 2yrs at 2.5per sounds about right.

Unless Dach really improves his faceoffs I'd like to see him on the wing, keep Strome at his natural position with Debrincat and Kane. Kubs-Toews-Dach on the 2nd line. Hagel-Johnson on the 3rd line and we'll see how camp goes to fill in the rest. Or switch Toews and Strome.

Plus Q as the coach, the Hawks didn't allow the 2nd most shots against back then, especially high quality shots. But yeah he should be re-signed before this season, 2yrs at 2.5per sounds about right. 1st off, my numbers were wrong. See below: Lankinen has seen 1204 SA in his career, has a .909, and has a 3.01 GAA...in 37 GP At the closest game point in his career, Crawford saw 1197 SA, had a .921, and has a 2.02 GAA...in 45 GP (that number is clostest to Lankinen's number--the next game he had over 1220 shots againt) Crawford for the bulk of his early career did play under very strong defenses as exemplified by the more games in a similar amount of shots and the lower GAA. However, he also played a game under the 2006 squad, who had almost as bad of a defense as the 'hawks have iced since 2016. But looking into those numbers a bit, Crawford's GP & shots against compare to what Lalime was exposed to at sub-.900, and Niemi at the 1194 shot count was .904 with a 2.53 GAA in 49 GP....and Niemi had about 1000 of those shots behind the 2010 überdefense...the rest behind the Sharks. So looking at the comparable for Lankinen: He looked better behind the shitty defense than Subban or Delia have, but not quite as good as the seasoned Lehner or Crawford--not that I'd expect him to look better than those two. Ergo, taking his numbers into consideration, I think Crawford at the same point in his career is an acceptable comparable, even though I'd err on the low-side for Lankinen--which I did since 4.5% of today's cap is over 3M. So 2.5M for 2 I think would be a good extension which is not a ton if he doesn't see icetime much this year (even though he should), unless he completely tanks the preseason.

Strome doesn't matter at this point anymore. He couldn't crack even the Yotes team. I'd like to see Koob-Hagel-Dach as a line. That could be a fun one to watch. That's if your going Toews-Kane-DCat, but who in that group will be in the corners battling? Kane or DCat?

It's a tough call. The Cat will battle in the corners, but he might be better off with another wing that could handle some of that. Cat and Kane would be amazing an amazing combo, but if they have trouble getting a clean entry with control...

im not a fan of cat and Kane together, they each have the same deficiencies in there own end. I just think good teams with a strong 3rd line would give them problems. Also cat with the right combo can lead a line. You will always have the ability when trailing at end of game to pair them up. As far as Lank yes 2 maybe even 3 years. Strome I have no idea maybe 3rd line center with Johnson on his wing but that would be scary defensively I just dont see where he fits.

Im hoping for a lot more attitude in our bottom 6 this year. I have high hopes for Hagel, but you're right: guys like Debrincat and Panarin were the ones with the attitude because most of the rest of the lineup seem to play like a bunch of prima donnas. IMHO the problem has to be leveled at the rest of the players, not Debrincat. He needs to keep doing what he's doing (and, IMHO, he should be wearing the A over Murphy all 2022 season). I'm hoping for some better attitude as well, but I'm coming into this year with a more cynical outlook than most. I don't think we have the depth a lot of other fans think we have. I think the 'hawks made improvements but I think the situation will be a lot more like 2016: a few guys step up and carry the team, but they're run into the ground and completely gassed by playoff time and we end up one and done. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not getting a contender vibe nor am I getting a good vibe that younger players will be allowed to develop and have some growing pains.

I can totally see your scenario playing out. Johnson has been on the decline the last couple years. And we’ve already seen what can happen with bringing in an injured free agent. So let’s say Johnson is meh, and McCabe ends up like deHaan. Then what? It’ll be the same all over again. A few years back we had Saad, Crawford and Maatta. Are they that much worse than Johnson, MAF and McCabe? You bring up a lot of valid points. So getting too excited about this team and the regular season in general is not really on the cards for me either!!!

Who on the roster besides Hagel can be that physical, puck retrieving top six winger and why TF do we continue to lean on 170 pounders for this role? How many concussions did small-framed guys like Shaw and Caggulia suffer tying the role for us? To be honest,Bret 'buyout' Connolly SHOULD be the guy for this role with his experience and size @3.5M but I almost never see him penciled into anyone's lineup, the speed of the game may have passed him by. I like the 'A' on D-Cat too,28 as a rook,41 with Strome and Perlini,18 on a checking line(LOFL) and a 50 goal pace last year skating with dubious linemates. What on earth would this kid look like skating with a good center and a real power forward on his off side? Jones is an upgrade on a 38yro Keith,MAF is an upgrade on Lankinen and JT is a massive upgrade on what we referred to as centers last year so the team SHOULD be better than last year's 1 under record......it's yet to be proven how much better. I like the idea of a bigger, tougher D-man like McCabe but I don't like the idea of his entire knee being put back together last year......I sincerely wish him good health because we need his type DESPERATELY. We wouldn't be in need of this type if the nitwit pursued Chiarot two years ago instead of Maata and deHAAN-job......Habs signed a healthy Chiarot for 3.5M as an URA and a 'tough as hell' Chiarot helped them to a SCF berth and we retained $$$ to make Maata go away......brilliant.

Are they that much worse than Johnson, MAF and McCabe? You bring up a lot of valid points. So getting too excited about this team and the regular season in general is not really on the cards for me either!!! I agree with you guys that we shouldn't get excited...yet, because on paper it looks good but they have to actually play together first. But the difference between a few years ago and now is that the top 2 dmen were small, I love Keith and it's not his fault he had to play that role but Montreal had Gus in the #6 spot with limited ice time and benched him the last couple games vs Tampa, yet JC gave him top2 minutes. They they put Keith with other small dmen like Boqvist and Mitchell, both rookies and small. So when Keith is replaced by a 6'4" right handed dmen in his prime that's one of the best 2way dmen today, I'm more optimistic that the defense will be better. Yes McCabe blew out his knee but knee surgery has come a long way over the years, he's had a lot of rest and he said it feels 100% and he was skating hard when he signed. And unlike Maatta, who I really like, he has ties to Chicago and knows Murphy and Seth. His injury might be the best thing for the Hawks cause if it didn't happen he'd probably get 6+ million as a UFA and longer term. And for Crow and MAF, Crow had 2 known concussions from nasty hits and a small timid team in front of him, MAF just had his best season and won the Vezina and has a much bigger team in front of him. Yes Johnson's numbers have been on the decline but the Lightning knew he wasn't coming back so they reduced his roll, he's still a talented hard working cup winner who will bring much needed experience to the bottom 6. Put big Connelly on his wing with a younger guy like Hagel. So yeah I'm optimistic cause on paper this team looks much better than the past 4-5yrs, especially when Panarin, Kane, and Crow had to carry the team till the Nashville series 🤦♂️ then they got shutdown because they were small and easily contained. But they have a good mix of size and skill now so we'll see.

Tyler Bozak remains unsigned.
He is 35 years old now, and certainly not a guy to sign long term. Nevertheless, he still produces at a half point a game clip, is very strong on faceoffs, and is defensively responsible.
If the player is interested in a one year deal at below $2 M, I would look to sign him and then trade Strome and Carpenter for picks/prospects.
Adding Bozak to the bottom six pretty much finishes the roster and puts this team in a playoff position for next year.

This is not a knock on Cat its just teams can cycle the shit out of them when they are on the ice together and come playoff time teams are a lot more disciplined to do this. I love Cats transition D but kane and cat in there own end is not ideal. As you said Cat does not need 88 or 19 he can make a line go all on his own now. If this team is gonna do anything they need to be top 12 defensively. That is a tall order, im not worried about this team scoring goals.

Not sure why you like that question so much when the Hawks had small inexperienced dmen and no depth up front, or in net.

But the coaching scares the shiznizit out of me!!! So would you also want Gus and Boqvist on the blueline over the Jones brothers? Or Forsberg, Delia, and Glass in net? Not sure why you like that question so much when the Hawks had small inexperienced dmen and no depth up front, or in net. That’s our depth guys compared to now. Caleb Jones isn’t even an NHL player at this point, considering his age, I don’t think he will be either. The depth is probably as good as it’s been in the last 5 years. We have to think just a couple years ago we had Toews, Kane, Kubalik, Saad, Dcat, Shaw, Maatta, deHaan, Keith, Murphy, etc. Etc ETC. But I don’t know if this team is any better at this point. One last thing. I fear chemistry will be tough for the team with half a roster turned over again. This may be a 2-3 year project. Plus the coaching is not National League. So we’ll see soon enough!!!

This is sooooo true, unfortunately.

Under 40 days to go!! we got the wings this month, actually. ok....exhibition, but it sounds better.

One last thing. I fear chemistry will be tough for the team with half a roster turned over again. This may be a 2-3 year project. Plus the coaching is not National League. So we’ll see soon enough!!! You mean Shaw who barely played because of another concussion that ended his career, Kubs was raw being a rookie, Debrincat was played on the 3rd line in a shutdown role 🙄 and all 4 dmen you mentioned are all 2nd paring dmen, yes even Keith. Plus Seabs was dealing with his injuries and a shell of himself. I've mentioned Crows concussions so I say MAF is an upgrade. And I didn't like the Keith trade because I would've rather had Broberg or Bouchard but not retaining salary for Keith and getting a pick and Caleb, which helped get his brother, looks good now. Caleb played 30+gms of the 56 last season, he does have the tools to be a good dman but he had confidence issues, maybe practicing and playing with his brother full time and a change of scenery will help get him on track. And yes there's been turnover, like all teams do, but not half the team. Murphy, Kalynuk, Stillman and de Haan are still here, McCabe is new but he's known Murph and Seth since his early teens, Caleb is a question mark but obviously knows Seth and then there's Beaudin and Mitchell who aren't new. And up front they have Kane, Debrincat, Toews, Dach, Hagel, Kubalik, Strome, Kurashev, Gaudette, Carpenter, and a few guys who played a little last season, Connelly, Entwistle, and Hardman. Nylander is questionable of course. I'm no mathematician but that's not half the team, but saying half sounds more dramatic to try and prove a point I guess. Of course I agree about the coaching though, huge question mark that concerns me. We'll soon find out how this team does on the ice.
