Holy crap, NJ just got a 1st rounder and a prospect for Coleman. I guess i was underestimating his value. TB is going to be in caphell next season. I would try and go after Cirelli. The Panthers will also be in cap-hell next year.

The failure of this road trip is a real blessing to my mind.
There is no doubt moving forward that the time has come to think long term. Bowman needs to purge and reset the salary cap situation -- and the core guys will no longer object.
It is without question a seller's market. Most of the non-playoff teams have little to offer of real value.
I believe Bowman should be making his moves right now. Surely Maata would be of interest to any playoff team (especially with some salary retained) for a couple of picks. Immediately, he would be among the best defenceman available. Gus is another obvious trade chip. I am definitely moving out Lehner, and I am listening to offers for Saad, Strome and Debrincat. If Crawford and Keith want to go, I would accommodate them as well.
New Jersey received 1st and 2nd round picks (along with Foote) for the marginal "talent" they gave up. Clearly, sellers are in the driver's seat this year. It is time for Bowman to show some balls.

I'm not saying this isn't the proper direction but losing all those players would result in a bottom feeder for a few years and I doubt the UC faithful is up for that. If the purge is that massive,do you look at moving K&T too?

Until management has restocked the cupboards with legit prospects, this team is a bottom feeder regardless. The issue to this stage has been keeping guys like Toews and Kane motivated and not completely burning them out.
I am keeping Keith and Crawford if they want to stay. I would not trade Kane or Toews unless they asked to be moved. You need these guys to groom the kids. All the others can be replaced more cheaply.
I would move out Debrincat now if possible because I believe his contract is potentially a real problem moving forward.

As we know, the window to win is very narrow these days. The contenders must load up when they are competitive or they will lose their opportunity.
Edmonton needs secondary scoring. Trade Debrincat and Maata (at half price) to them for Bouchard, Broberg and a high pick.
Colorado needs a goalie and some secondary scoring. Trade them Lehner (at 50%) and Saad (at 50%) for Byram and a high pick.
Vegas wants Gustafsson. Add a B grade prospect (Wise) and take back Krebs.
Draft one of the premium forwards with the high pick this year, and you are 3/4 of the way through a re-build with plenty of cap space moving forward. You now have the best young defence prospect pools in the league, and you remain strong down the middle at forward. Use the cap savings to add a couple of wingers in the UFA market.

I wouldn't trade Maatta or Saad unless it's a crazy offer. They're both in their mid 20's, 6'2" 200+lvs, and have 2 Cupa. They both have 2yrs years left on their contracts and Maatta could easily get 5+ million on the open market, 4mill is a good cap hit for what he brings. Saad has really grown since his first season back in Chicago, especially after having a baby last summer. 6mill for a player who can skate and play a strong 2way game and get 20 goals shouldn't be traded away, again. Unless of course it's a crazy offer. Keep those 2 and try and get them their 3rd Cups. Yes Debrincat is having an off year but I've been following him closely since his Eerie days, you don't trade a kid like that, his 40 goals last season wasn't a fluke, he'll bounce back. Strome is skating a lot better but he's struggling this year, injuries don't help, but it'll help with contract talks, I'd keep him and Debrincat. Gus can go and I wanna see Lehner here another 4-5yrs but if they can't sign him before the deadline, he has to be traded. Koekkoek is playing better so he could probably get a decent return, and I'd see what Caggiula could get. The Hawks have some good pieces but there's some that really hurt this team, having Colliton coaching them isn't helping.

In Bowman's defence, he did go for it every year when he had the opportunity. Some general managers are too timid.
Colorado and Edmonton should be loading up right now. They have two or three years max, and there is a clear path for both teams to win. Will they? Who knows?
If I was running the show in either market, I would.
Prospects are only prospects. They will not be players for two or three years. By that time, the window is beginning to close for both teams.

Re Saad - I like the player very much, but he is likely to walk as a UFA after next year. The Hawks are not winning a cup between now and then.
Re Debrincat - Even if the player bounces back entirely, he is not a $6.4 M/year player for a rebuilding team. The money should be better spent.
Rebuild the defence first. Then stock up on centres and physical forwards. Add scoring wingers and goalies at the very end of a rebuild.

And how much is a 35-40 goal scorer worth? 6.4 sounds pretty reasonable. Plus he's only 22.

Right now it’s best to load up on picks and prospects. I would seriously send Lehner and Saad to the Avs for Byram. I’d even retain half their salary. The Avs also have Alex Newhook and Connor Timmins, Martin Kaut. They got some great prospects to cherry pick. This is the best path forward.
We need to see this team cut the fat and start over. I just fear the length of the rebuild if all the assets are not utilized. Many teams need a goalie, Lehner is a prized fighter, we can land a lot for him. Same with Saad.
The quicker Stan does this the better. Once one team loads up, another will be begging us for the others. I feel we have one shot here, or else we’re on a long road to a longer road. It’ll take decades to get back, like it did before!!!

I’m more familiar with the Oilers than other teams and the consensus in Edmonton seems to be that Holland doesn’t move any picks or prospects this year. They’ve decided next year might be their “all in” year. With the emergence of Kailer Yamamoto they have their own small scoring winger, they won’t need or want Dcat. Tyler Benson, a PPG’er in the AHL and second round pick makes their team next year. It looks like they have settled on Bear and Jones in their defence corps as regulars. Maybe Broberg becomes available next year, they’re a little concerned about his development. Evan Bouchard looks untouchable at the moment. Just an aside. At one point I would have taken a flyer on getting Puhljujarvi from them but there seems to a decent amount of opinion that he will never be an NHL player, at least not one worthy of his draft position. Now if you could somehow get Peyton Krebs away from Vegas I’d be tickled pink. Krebs looks to be playing with Mikal Teply in Winnipeg now and it’s helping with Teply’s stats no doubt. is Gus and a prospect does that I’m all in.

He is a premium finisher with a nose for the net. This is his game, though he is having a rough year. Contenders need specialists like him, especially for the powerplay. Rebuilding teams really don't. This team is a few years from contending. Bowman will need the cap space to reload the defence. I remain hopeful that Nylander will eventually more than replace the 30 goals Debrincat delivers. The bigger loss will be Saad.

If you believe he is St. Louis, of course you keep him.
I see Vrbata/Sullivan.

It's hard to argue that DeBrincat is not having a stellar season. However, he's one of the few potential goal-scorers that the Hawks have. He'll probably get to 20-something this year, and, hopefully, will rebound the next season. Other than D-cat, I don't see anyone coming down the pike with a goal-scoring potential to replace Kane, as his production wanes. I don't believe that Dach is going to be a huge goal-scorer; more of an all-around solid player. Kubalik may end up being a reliable 30+ goals-per-year player, but we don't know yet.
The obvious person to trade is Lerner. Other than that, if someone wants to take Smith off our hands, that would be great.

If Bowman's in charge much longer, this is a moot point anyway but he'd probably agree with ya(he'd be the only one) on his prize addition Nylander. What part of Nylander's game tells you he can become a 30 goal scorer? GOD AWFUL TRADE! Yours is the first and only comparison made between the two youngsters and will probably be the last!

Neither of the latter hit 41 goals, and Dcats 76 points in his 2nd season is more than either of the two ever got. Now, I’m all for trading a guy if we can get a young Hossa type. By trading guys like Saad, Maatta, Lehner etc. We’re saving a massive amount there. Plus CC is off the books next year. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the cap. If you wanna get rid of Dcat for other reasons, fine, I understand, but let’s be honest, the cap is not part of that problem. It’s 3 years @ 6.4. He takes up 7.5% of the cap, that’s not really that bad. I still feel we should farm other teams prospects and make trades for them. But, I’m not in the camp that believes Stan will get it right. If the Hawks don’t do anything, that clearly indicates that the org has put handcuffs on Stan and the team as is has to make the playoffs or he’s gone!!!

No team is trading their proven 22yro goal scorer who just signed a reasonable bridge deal, you can count on that if you can count on anything. D-Cat's shooting % is on him,he's missed opportunities he converted in the past and he's fumbled the puck this year as well but the FACT remains he skated with 3rd line quality linemates(if that)for close to half the year. You don't see anyone coming down the pike because there is no one and there are few in general.

I think he’ll make a couple of smaller moves and say they’re still trying for a playoff spot. At this point, he’s more than likely dead man walking. They have a real opportunity to trade and get solid pieces. I sure hope that MacIvor or someone else is doing some homework and looking into trades too. Most assistants do. So if they did handcuff Stan, that may be worse than anything. I honestly feel that trading away at least 4-5 guys is the right move. I suspect that the org wants to see this through and wants to see if they can make the playoffs. And if they don’t, their big splash will be shtcanning Stan and talking about a new direction!!!

Nylander for Joker has got to be a fireable offence. It seems every time we think he makes a good move, the underlying truth comes out and the trade is a bust. I’m hoping the org lets Stan at least move out Lehner and Maatta for now. Hopefully the new GM has something to work with, instead of a massive mushy mess!!!

I saw it mentioned in the Suntimes yesterday, (using Moneypuck's numbers), that the Hawks playoff chances were now 17.2%. Stan needs to be a seller, especially with the prices we've seen paid.
Here's something I'm curious about. Let's say Stan wants to try and trade someone like Gus, or maybe Saad; someone that would have some decent value to other teams. Would Stan necessarily get more now than if he waited until the off season? There's some good prices currently being paid; would they still hold up in the off season?
I've never been fully clear on this; at what point do the Hawks lose any rights to trade Gus? Is it June 1st?

They both have cap-friendly long term deal (at least for Zucker). Coleman is only making 1.8 and wont expire until after next season.
I doubt many would give a lot for a rental. I think we'd get a 1st rounder for Lehner if there are salary/caphit retained. Saad might get more than Lehner

Good point about Coleman and Zuker and it's hard to say what Lehner fetches.....we don't see that many TDL goaltender trades. The Avs are loaded with cap space and Grubauer's out indefinitely,if the Avs acquire Lehner now, they'll have a leg up on re-signing him if that's their intention. Grubauer has one left @3.3M and could easily be tradeable himself when healthy both GT's are 28. I wonder who's on CC's ten team list.

This makes it that much more painful that Gus wasn't traded last summer. There would probably be a nice first round pick developing in Rockford as we speak.

don't expect to get a haul from trading Lehner. Both Coleman and Zucker are not UFAs after this season. They both have cap-friendly long term deal (at least for Zucker). Coleman is only making 1.8 and wont expire until after next season.

yup. SB is loyal to a fault. That's why I don't think Maatta will be traded. Unless of course we are really in a tight cap crunch, which currently, were not.
I see Lehner getting moved because of it. I don't think he was in SBs plan last offseason. He even mentioned that he was surprised by the opportunity of signing Lehner. Now, imagine if Lehner wasn't available. What was Stan's plan in goal last offseason? That goalie plan will probably be put to place this coming offseason.
Smith will probably be traded too. He was a cap dump collateral. I'm guessing SB was looking to dump AAs salary and no one wanted to touch it. this offseason will be the same situation with Smith, I doubt anyone would want to absorb all of Smith's caphit. Look for a trade where another player will be coming back with lower caphit, but longer term.
