Canes - Wild game postponed tonight too. This seems to be escalating in the NHL at a time where there’s not that much scheduling wiggle room with the Olympics coming up.

I'm betting the Olympics will be a no-go. It would absolutely damage the rest of the NHL season. Players not playing are heading to Mexico, and the ones there are going to have to sit out an extra 2 weeks when they get back. So it’s best not to go there for those reasons and about 200 more political reasons. But that’s a different topic!!!

I'm betting the Olympics will be a no-go. Players have to decide for themselves. I read that if you tested positive for Covid while in China (during the Olympics) you wont be able to leave the country (or enter another one) for another week or so for quarantine. Imagine, if youre an Olympian and tested positive with a day left of the Olympics but have to stay in China another week or longer. If you're an NHL player, you'll missed more games and that would be the least of your problems

Can't see how that would fly having the leagues best players stuck there that long.

I could understand the occasional benching to refocus the player or for lackadaisical play but the prolonged benchings we've seen have done Strome or the team no good IMO. Maybe he can find a little confidence or up his value a bit but his value has been damaged needlessly.

It is time to stop blaming Arizona Buffalo and Chicago for the short comings of Strome and Nylander. They are both older and relatively the same size as Dach but Dach IMO is more physically and mentallly mature. When the league shut down for covid Dach realized he was not strong enough so did something about it. Strome and Nylander did nothing hoping that their skills would be enough and they are still doing nothing. If you consider Strome as the true #1 center when he is put on the 3rd line his stats should take an upturn and his skills should be more noticed. Part of a scouting report I read said that Strome had great vision and he had NHL hands but he had AHL feet.

SB gave up on his own 1st round D-man who made the league @19 because a coach who had no business behind an NHL bench had a hardon for him. Speaking of hardons, after two 20 game looks for a BAD AZ team,Strome had 17/51 in 58gms with a +2 and followed that up with 12/38 in 58gms with a +1. So,89pts/29gls +3 and 20 PP points in his first 116 games here and then what? A coach who had no business in the league worked his magic!LOFL!!!! Do you really know Strome did nothing during the shutdown or are you just ASSuming? Feel free to let me know when the more physically and mentally mature Dach breaks 50 points or wins half his draws like Strome is doing so far. When D-Cat hangs em up,his 18 goal season will be looked back upon with curiosity but Hawk fans will know that Harry Potter was the only guy to hold the young superstar under 20 goals. Only SB could watch his HC demote one of the league's best goal scorers to a checking line and keep him employed.

As you point out, his stats for the first 116 games here are strong - but apparently Colliton didn't like his defensive efforts so he's either scratched or moved down in the lineup. Then King comes along and also has "some issues with Strome's game". It may have been pointed out earlier in this thread what those issues are - again defensive effort? Why have 2 coaches soured on him plus he was sitting sometimes in AZ. So what's the deal? When I watch him play he's pretty good with the puck and he wins half of his faceoffs. Not sure he would be a first line center for most teams but here maybe so. I would like to see him get a fair chance over 20 - 25 games without jerking him around in the lineup. But there is something that must rub coaches the wrong way where they would go so far as to bench him for extended periods. . . .

After being drafted in 2015 Strome still played 91 games in the OHL Erie (DeBrincat), 50 AHL games and 48 NHL games in Arizona. Strome joined Chicago at the age of 22. You claim JC had no business coaching in the league and that he worked his magic on Strome. This is the same magic JC used on DeBrincat, Dach, Hagel and every other player in his charge and they all worked their butts off when they were placed on the third line to work on their defensive game while Strome played as if he was entitled, lacked the will to defend or maybe a lack of skating. Part of one scouting report was that Strome had AHL feet. Vinny and Schmaltz improved their play by putting in the work with Kane in the offseason. When you put in the work improvement follows. Strome plays the same and his lack of improvement indicates a lack of work. Toews and Kane were rookies on a bad Hawk team and they were both able to produce. Kane and DeBrincat took Strome along for the ride. When he was not with Kane and DeBrincat his numbers were: Arizona (48-7-9-16 pts -11) after the duo (60-12-12-24 pts -19). I would not say that Strome was one of the best goal scorers but DeBrincat is. I see nothing wrong with a coach who wants to build a winner expecting his players to give one hundred percent on both ends of the ice. If our 33 year old captain can I expect the same from everyone else. Strome is almost 25 years old and finally around 50% on the draw and he did not have to recover from a severe wrist injury. I would hope that Dach in the next two season will be 50% at the dot and have a 50 points season. When D-cat retires anyone checking his stats will wonder. Why did this not happen in his sophomore season? Most people are not Blackhawk fans and not only will they not know who his center was they will not give a damn.

I doubt he gets an NHL gig ever again. If he does. He’s gonna have to cut his way through the AHL for years. Maybe then he becomes a good coach. But right now, I don’t think how “Great Communicator” status is much to brag about. Not realistic!!!

Strome spent much of his first year here with D-Cat and Perlini, especially later in the season but it didn't matter the former Erie teammates rediscovered their magic. Strome's far from the only poor defensive player in the game and I believe most HC's would play this player to his and the team's advantage instead of constantly trying to prove a point. Stubbornness and constantly pounding round pegs into square holes cost JC his job and more than likely the chance to coach again in the HNL.........the start we saw was the players having enough. D-Cat was great everywhere he played and he was gonna be great in the NHL too, regardless of coaching. Q had him as a rookie and I won't give him credit for D-Cat's natural development either. D-Cat potted FORTY ONE his sophomore season and you wanted him on a checking then too? Putting young players in the proper position to succeed and gain confidence and winning games in the NHL is a HC's job but JC was more intent on proving points and teaching moments IMO. D-Cat will continue to do what he does wherever he plays and Hagel's a talented kid who plays hard wherever he plays too but we saw Boqvist regress,NOlander regress,Joker regress and foolishly given up on and Dach's progress is debatable. I don't share your opinion but I respect it and Happy Holidays!

I think we both realize Strome has some holes in his game and isn't good defensively but decent offensively,so what do ya do? Do you put him with players he can excel with, protect him defensively and sit him once in a while to keep him focused to at least protect his trade value or sit him for long stretches in favor of lesser players ruining his confidence and trade value? I'll never understand how SB gave him 3M for 2 years and then he doesn't play.......did he and JC even discuss the signing?

Regarding Strome: From my eyes, he stopped putting in the effort and getting in the dirty areas of the ice. Instead, he floated around the perimeter, twirling to avoid physical contact.
My guess is that he became spooked after getting hit a couple of years back and getting the concussion. He lost his confidence, and the coach's hardline approach only made the situation worse.
I think Strome might be a lost cause at this point. He has the talent, no question, and he does show it in spurts. But if he is dealing with some of fear of contact, he will never produce at the level necessary to justify a raise on $3 M.
At the deadline, I might offer him a prove it - one year deal - with a salary cut. If his agent declines, I move him for a pick.

He has the skill, but somewhere along the line the fear of contact and "getting dirty" has taken hold. He has a chance to play on a line with his best friend and Kane now. If that isn't enough motivation, I don't know what is.

Strome may be coming into his own but he still needs to improve his game and that includes back checking. He is not going to become an elite scorer so he needs to help out in other ways and the only way to ruin him is to let him get away with laziness. D-Cat is an elite scorer but yet he still back checks and he is damn good at it. Coach Q sat many players when they were not playing the right way and that was his way and I think he would have handled Strome the same way. Dach has not been treated any different than Strome. You tend to forget Strome was also a 3rd overall and IMO you are willing to give him a pass. Who is doing more is obvious. Dach has earned the trust of the coaches; and he plays in all situations. Dach has a game winning shootout goal against the Devils December 6, 2019. He got his chance to shoot because DeBrincat and Strome were both stopped. Recently he assisted on Caleb Jones overtime winner against Washington.

So you're saying the Hawks never should have traded Perlini. Obviously he was the key to Stromers success. LOL I actually thought could have been a good line with Perlini's speed and size to compliment Cats and Strome teamwork.

I've NEVER blamed Buffalo for NOlander,NOlander SUCKS and so does the trade. You seem to be a fan of stats so here are some. Sorry but that was not a bad team, they just missed the playoffs and if they would have had 5 more games think they would have been in. 3pnts out of playoff spot.

I was checking up on his high ankle sprain and discovered he was off earlier that season on concussion protocol. The article is called Where Things Stand Between Dylan Strome, Blackhawks. This is a precautionary tale of taking care of your injuries and coming back when you are ready. Strome started the season playing his best hockey and claimed he came back too early and he has not been the same since. A good HC would expect his players to put in the work. On game day a good HC watches how the players practice and based on that decides who to play and who to sit First of all I have always believed that DeBrincat belonged on the top two lines. I also believe that hockey is a team game and every player should be ready and willing to play where the coach decides. A HC is always looking for ways to improve their teams. Q’s blender was always turned on ready to spit out new combinations. Boqvist was a terrible draft pick and he did not regress because for him the only way was up. Nylander never put it altogether and he reminds me of the great Ottawa Senators pick (cough cough) Alexander Daigle. Personally I had high hopes for the Joker because I remember when he was drafted they showed a body of his work from a WJC and he really looked impressive. Kirby Dach is the real deal. He is not putting up great numbers but he fights hard along the boards when he plays with 12 and 88 and is one of the better players when it comes to zone entry plus heplays in all situations. He played on the third line against Washington and every comment made was a positive one. Happy Holidays!

Thre's no doubt Strome could've done more and pushed harder,King benched him and Q would've from time to time too.....you're right. The question for me with Strome,is why does the team give him that contract if the HC has no use for him? I liked him more than most but even I expected a 2-21/2M one year, show me deal. I also think most HC's play him as much as they can since the team has few better players at the position and putting him on with the right linemates for mostly offensive draws might have protected his value. I haven't made much out of Strome's injuries,I think he's had two mild concussions and a high ankle sprain.I'm sure they were set backs but I don't think they're a major factor with his situation. You mentioned what a "good HC" would have done in different situations and I'm not sure the last one fits that description,he didn't walk into a good situation either. Boqvist was a poor pick and that's not JC's fault, maybe he can be used a bit better like Clmbs did but he was the wrong pick. Beaudin and Mitchell might be poor picks too but I thought JC got it wrong with Joker,he cut his minutes right away, started benching him and then sent him down with a comment about 'not having a man-body yet',somebody had to convince SB to give up on his own 19yro,1st rounder who made the team @19. Dach's offensive numbers don't bother me one bit because his all around game is solid,if Strome had the same all around game,he'd never be scratched......we agree on that too. I also like Dach's hockey IQ and it'll improve,I like his effort level and his attitude. These same attributes concern me as far as FO's though because I have to think the kid's determined and he's working on them a lot and he still has a way to go...........getting to 40% last year was encouraging and he's still 20.

Some good points made about Strome and Dach in the last several posts. I think both can be part of a successful Hawks team in the coming years despite their current shortcomings which have been amplified by some poor coaching and less than ideal use of them. I agree that Dach was rushed and thrown in the deep end too quickly. He has actually still responded to this challenge fairly well - at least relative to his teammates- but he has to improve at the dot no question. I don’t like how Strome has been handled and would still like to give him an extended opportunity to solidify himself. A game or two here and there on the top line or PP#1 isn’t enough. Maybe some guys require more stability of their linemates than others. Someone mentioned 6th rounder Hagel was better in virtually every aspect of the game than #3 pick Dach but he is 2+ years older. Also he was played the way Dach should have been played - start out on the 4th line, work your ass off and get promoted. And it has been a delight to watch Hagel play.

Thanks for posting these! I think the price was (is and will be) on the high side but can you imagine the D or O without him? And who else is out there and available to take this role? Can’t see anybody in the system anywhere near ready despite Bowman’s supposed emphasis on drafting D-men.

The answer to your question is desperation. The work of the centers in the bubble set up Strome as the #3 center. Prior to the start of the next season Toews was out indefinitely, Dach was out at least 4 months because of his wrist injury leaving Strome as their new #1 center.
