One thing hit me right between the eyes watching that game, the GT who made 45 saves and a D-man who skated well over 20 minutes as a mainstay on one of the league's best teams were throw-ins when DUMBASS had deHAAN-job's entire deal hung on the team. It was a pure salary dump three years ago and the guy's still untradeable......did the Canes sweeten or retain $$$? NOPE....just another deal that damaged the team. To be fair,I won't pretend I was high on Forsberg or Forsling when they were here but I'm not the GM and I get high on other shit. Nice to see Bob settle down and the Cats are never out of a game. I actually saw a bit of Hjalmarsson in Forsling when he first came up. In my opinion he's shown better skating abilities then Hammer, who was more of the stay at home in the pairings he ever had with Campbell and Oduya, who were both the ones relied on more to skate the puck out of the zone. Hammer could lay out the biggest hits that I don't see Forsling doing, but he is playing with Gudas. Seems it's a total role reversal from what Hammer had in Chicago.
As for Forsberg, I was upset from the beginning with this trade, considering they gave up Panarin in the deal, and getting a goalie who was 1-8-0 in 10 appearances over 3 years, and a GAA of 4.02 with a save percentage of .879. But he's hung in there and seems to have finally found himself in Ottawa, although it is a small sample size.
That's quite the compliment,a guy couldn't get much better in his own end than the Hammer. I see Forsling's game more resembling Dunks' to be honest but to a lesser degree obviously,he should end up with 30pts from the back-end though......not bad from a 2nd pair D-man. I remember Forsling and Rutta both looking good as a D-pair to start the season back in 17 and then coming back down to earth after the league got a book on em but it was promising none the less. The two start for two of hockey's very best teams now.

Something about playing the Hawks brings out the worst in Florida. After beating the Hawks February 20th, 5 - 2, tha Panthers lost their next 3 games. Today, after shutting out the Hawks, they're getting hammered by New Jersey, 6 - 2 after 2 periods.
Edit: amazing comeback with a 4 goal 3rd period, and Forsling with the OT winner. Panthers come all the way back to win 7 - 6. 5 of the 7 goals scored by defensemen

I was listening to the guys on NHLN the day after Fla beat Mtl and they mentioned it seemed like the Cats almost approach these games against weaker teams like scrimmage games or to practice certain parts of their game. I don't know about that but they mentioned they don't mess around at home as much like we saw when they led the entire game against the Hawks.
It did happen at home against the Habs though when the Cats went up 4-1 only to start the 3rd tied and then step on the gas and win 7-4. That seems dangerous to me but what do I know,Cats went into the 3rd trailing 6-2 in Jersey yesterday.....tied it up and won in OT.

Congrats to the Florida Panthers, being the first team in the NHL to clinch a playoff spot after defeating Buffalo 5 - 3. Tremendous regular season (so far).

Another insane comeback by the Panthers against the Leafs, trailing 5 to 1 in the 2nd, only to cut it to 5 - 4 by the end of the period and take the lead with 2 goals in the 3rd. Leafs tie it, but Panthers win it in OT 7 - 6.
Top 2 offenses in the league made for a wild game. Bobrovsky shaky again. Agree with Vadarx that he's a potential problem going into the playoffs. 3 goals on 3 shots in the 2nd got him pulled. 2nd time in recent games Knight takes over for him. Can not play like this in the playoffs.

Loafs/Cats would be a fun second round matchup, and I kinda hope we get it, only because it would mean no Tampa (provided they actually finish in the top 3 in the division, which looks to not be a sure thing right now). although, tb/cats in the first and then loafs/cats in the second would be good watchin....

Huberdeau, first cat to have 100 pts. Also Giroux’s first goal as a cat, hows he been doing so far?

Huberdeau, first cat to have 100 pts. Also Giroux’s first goal as a cat, hows he been doing so far? He just does so much, puck battles,PK,win 56% of his draws and 9pts/+5 in his first 8 games. I wonder if Philly fans enjoy watching his rebirth and chasin' a cup......he's FLYIN' out there!

The team itself is going through a Jekyl and Hyde phase defensively,Bob's been inconsistent but he was the third star for March....... www.nhl.com/panthers/news/sergei-bobrovsky-named-nhls-third-star-of-the-month-for-march/c-332518764But it's been April fools so far this month. Ekblad left a big hole and will make a big difference when he returns,Chairot will pay dividends but this Haag guy looks lost in his 10 minutes per. Carlsson's better in his own end. The Cats are a bit of an enigma lately but GOD DAM fun to watch. First last night was a tight checking 1-1 period with both GT's playing well, the teams scored SEVEN in the second! Marner beats tenders on the shorty break and Blackwell was all alone when he scored the Leafs 4th,Bob let the 3rd Toronto goal go right through him though. The startling thing is what the Cats do when they find themselves down 5-1 after 5 unanswered, they go F'n NUTS and score the next five totally outplaying the Leafs the rest of the way. Fla wins in regulation if Haag doesn't take a penalty right after killing one but I had a feeling Barkov and Huberdeau wouldn't be denied in OT. They might not be denied this June either.

Playoff atmosphere against the Predators last night, and the Panthers played a much better 60 minute game. Score was 2 to 1 until 2 late empty netters. Preds had a lot of 3rd period O-zone time but Knight shut them down, although he almost blew it when he came out past the hash marks to clear the puck and gave it right to the Predator player. Fortunately the shot hit the side of the wide open net, and the Panthers went on to win 4 to 1. These are the types of games they are going to have to get used to come playoff time. If they can get several more games like this in the final 10, it will prepare them better come playoff time.

Nice bit of coaching by Bruno,PO team,on the road,PO atmosphere and they show they can play shut down hockey when necessary. I know this is usually the type of hockey played during the PO's but not always, the Cats can win either way. Bruno says "Ekblad is on schedule" with three weeks to go before the postseason.
I just don't think Barkov and Huberdeau will be denied this year and now they have the suppot to back it up,the two players are a pure joy to watch. Both score, make beautiful plays and passes, both also kill penalties, will block shots, play physical and do whatever necessary.

Another hard earned win against Anaheim, putting 55 shots on goal in order to win in OT 3 - 2. Josh Gibson did all he could, but the Panthers were just relentless. These are great games to prep for the playoffs. Tough goalie, tight, low scoring game, overtime win (although won't see 3 on 3 come playoff time). Everything they'll be seeing regularly once the playoffs start.

The Panthers are a 'Wagon' right now.....holy crap! Bruno mentioned losing leads and falling behind before coming back to win might be entertaining(IT IS!) but it wasn't for him and not how to approach the PO's in a presser a while back. Florida's allowed 5gls the last 4gms while scoring 19 themselves. Came out yesterday with a solid shut-down 1st in Detroit before tapping the gas a bit for 4 in the 2nd,+26 goal diff over the 10 game win streak and 19-2-1 since the start of March. They're toying with teams and 'can' win the cup with either tender if Ekblad comes back rested and ready IMO.
Lotta great players and a lotta great combo's but Barkov and Huberdeau are on another level this year,64/190 with 7gms to go but that's half the story. Barkov's winning 56% of his FO's while defending a Selke and Hooby just set an assist record for his position and BOTH are outstanding on the kill and they don't stop scoring then either with 7 shorties combined this year.
I don't recall a better collection of forward talent(3 guys w/30 and 2 more right there) since the Oil or the Isle of the early 80's!
Outstanding 20yro center and GT don't hurt either........22-8-2 2.72/.910 in 34 gms/28 starts 1-1-0 2.06/.933 in two PO starts Spence Knight turns 21 tomorrow.

Panthers continue to roll, despite an incredible performance by another opposing goalie, winning their 11th straight, this time 3 - 2 in OT.
Panthers tie NHL record with 12th OT win Barkov scores all 3 Panther goals for a career high 37 goals. Huberdeau assists on all 3 goals, extending his NHL record for assists by a LW, now with 81. He also takes over the lead in points in the NHL over McDavid. Panthers also now tied with Colorado for the points lead at 116. Next Panthers win or Toronto loss locks the Panthers in at best record in the east. Panthers are nearly unbeatable at home, currently 32 - 6 with 3 games remaining. This team is just relentless, and Ekblad is now skating. He was once again on a Norris candidate pace before he went down.
Side note: Hawks should find a way to get Mamin in the off-season. Big guy with soft hands, good speed, and not afraid to mix it up. At 27, they may feel he's too old, but he's got some skill.

I think with all the adversity the Panthers have gone through over the past couple years. And there’s a lot. I think it’s their Cup to lose. They’re just loaded and ready to rock. Getting back Ekblad is huge. Getting Giroux is huge. Getting Chiarot is huge.
Plus look at guys like Duclair, Reinhart and Bennet. That’s absolute depth right there.
I’m betting that they go the distance. I just haven’t see a team like that since 2010!!!

If season ended today they would play in first round Washington, with Boston, Pens & Bolts still possible, not going to be easy as all of those teams have won cups, some more recent and obviously Bolts two time defending champs. I agree Ekland is huge and the others you mention will help. Will see if Bob can overcome some past playoff failures. Since Hawks are not playing and I love watching playoff hockey it is one of the teams I will be following and rooting for along with the Canes.

I was impressed watching an Isle team that has gotten it's shit together over the last few months play their old brand of shut-down D last night. The Cats found themselves down 2-1 with 4 minutes to go and I couldn't help but think how bad the Isle would feel if they let this one slip away after playing Florida as well defensively as any team has for over a month. Sasha Barkov stayed out for over 90 seconds on a 4 on 4 shift after a bad high-sticking call negated a PP......it looked like he wasn't coming off the ice till the score was tied. Barkov and Huberdeau in OT is almost unfair.......one of the games best defensive teams thought so.
Lotta great dynamic duos out there but none of em look as hungry as Florida's!
McJesus/Drystruddle Mathews/Marner or Barkov/Hooby which duo breaks through this year? Gotta think one,two or all three get past the first round....for the first time.
