Highly entertaining game between Panthers and Penguins tonight. Best I've seen all season. Lots of scoring and some lead changes during the game.

Matthew Tkachuk changing my mind as the season has gone on. He's a tough SOB, but he's got some great skill. He said when he was traded to the Panthers he hates Tampa. All he's done tonight is 2 goals, 3 assists with the Panthers pummeling the Lightning and Vasilevskiy 7 to 1.
Always fun to see anyone kick Tampa ass

That might have leveled it for you (don't know the first thing about fantasy leagues)

I thought Zito might have panicked after getting swept out the year before and 2/3 of a season does not define a trade but Tkachuk is absolutely lighting it up and Huberdeau and Weegar are absolutely not. I will say some of Zito's trades/signings like Verhaeghe,Montour,Reinhart,Bennett and Forsling have been good to very good and they can buy Bob out next year w/o too much damage if needed.
Q having to step down was a massive setback for Florida but it seems Maurice is getting what he can out of his best players.

I've never seen that team looser with the puck in their own end, allowing 49 SoG's against.

This is sad, but I will say Knight just hasn't been anywhere near the goalie he was last year. I chalked it up to the sophomore jinx. Unfortunately there was much more to it. Whatever his challenges are, I hope he can get the help to get him past this and back on course.
Panthers' Spencer Knight to get care from assistance program 4:43 PM ET Associated Press NEW YORK -- Florida Panthers goaltender Spencer Knight is out indefinitely while he receives care from the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.
The league and players' association announced Knight's absence Friday.
Knight will continue to be paid while receiving treatment. He can return to the team once he is cleared for on-ice competition by program administrators.
The 21-year-old from Connecticut was sent to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League earlier this week in a transaction to clear salary-cap space for the season debut of forward Anthony Duclair, who is coming back from tearing an Achilles tendon.
Knight is in his second full season in the NHL, sharing responsibilities in net with veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. He has started in 19 games and appeared in 21, going 9-8-3 with a 3.18 goals-against average and .901 save percentage.
The NHL and NHLPA started the player assistance program in 1996, giving players access to a confidential phone line and counselors in each city in the league. The jointly funded group assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.

The trade between Calgary and Florida is a landslide win for this season at least. I wasn't initially impressed with Tkachuks play but as the season has continued, he's becoming a beast. His play from Calgary to Florida hasn't dropped off, while neither Huberdeau or Weeger have put up very impressive numbers. And while Tkachuk looks to be leading the Panthers towards the playoffs, the Flames look to be limping to the finish line and an early trip to the golf course.
Tkachuk: 33 g, 62 a, 95 p, +23
Huberdeau: 14 g, 33 a, 47 p -4
Weeger: 3 g, 22 a, 25 p, +10

Weegar was coming off back-back good seasons too and I don't get that either. It must come down to chemistry because Barkov's numbers are down a bit w/o Huberdeau too for Fla and Mangiapane and Lindholm are both well off last year's goal totals up in Calgary. Kadri's numbers compared to last year's are also disappointing........too much 'bitter beer face' up there?

I thought the Flames won that trade I initially, but it sure seems like the Cats got the W by a decent margin now. now if they can ever figure out that good team balance vs the salary cap thing they might win something...or maybe Bob just gets hot at the right time... edit: also, the Flames have been done in by their horrendous goalie play this year, imo, which seems to be Sutter's MO. once Quick quit bailing them out in LA, they went right to shit, the same way Calgary has this season with Markstrom.

Seems like the team is in turmoil. Could be a good thing to motivate the players during the playoffs. Focus their anger to the coach and aim it towards the opponent.

Verhaeghe with 4 goals tonight, scoring his 40th goal on the Panthers 40th shot in the game. Joins Pavel Bure as only 2 Panthers with 40 or more goals in a season (Bure had 58 and 59 goal seasons). Tkachuk with 38 so could join Verhaeghe before the season ends. Reinhart with his 29th, so he's on the verge of making it 3 Panthers with 30 or more. Yet with all that, they're still fighting for their playoff lives.

Florida announcer before tonights game says the Panthers control their own fate:
Pittsburgh came in tonight with a 1 point lead and both teams have the same number of games left. So NO Goldie, the Panthers do not control their fate.

Panthers bombing Ottawa 7 - 1 despite being outshot 42 - 19 after 2 periods. Panthers goalie Lyon playing out of his mind.
2nd period got nasty after Matthew Tkachuk took out Debrincat with a vicious but clean open ice hit. From that point, Brady Tkachuk went into Lyon twice intentionally, the 2nd time leading to a fight and game misconduct for Brady and Mark Stall. To his credit and toughness, Cat only missed a few shifts and got right back at it.
This was a must win for Ottawa or they get eliminated from playoffs. Brady didn't do his team any favors getting thrown out.

Ottawa head coach given a 2 minute and game misconduct. I've seen bench penalties called on a coach, but not sure I've ever seen a coach get thrown out of the game before.
By the end of game 8 players either received game misconducts or 10 minute misconducts with under 10 left in game, plus Ottawas coach, including both Tkachuk brothers
Despite being outshot 58 to 30, the Panthers win 7 - 2, officially eliminating Ottawa from the playoffs.

The Cat got a piece of Tkachuk after the puck was gone right before and he was lookin' for the Cat next time down and lowered the boom. The Lil Dud got back in there and wanted to fight Ekblad on his 1st shift back and then got thrown out for roughing and wanting to fight Tkachuk later in the 3rd. Good to see the team have his back in a big way.....the brothers dam near fought!

Blew a chance last night to clinch a playoff spot. Their final game against a struggling Hurricane team Thursday.
If Pittsburgh loses either of their remaining 2 games they deserve to miss the playoffs. Playing the 2 worst teams in the league (Hawks and Columbus). While the Islanders finish up against the Canadiens.

Well, on the bright side, the Penguin loss clinches a playoff spot for the Panthers.
They still need a point to avoid a first round match up with the Bruins, although Florida beat them 2 out of 3 in regular season.
So Florida wins year one of the big trade with Calgary

personally, I'm not sure anyone really wants to play this team right now. if they use their brains and keep Lyon in net, they might give a favored team a bit of trouble in the first round. they are playing well in front of him right now.
not sure they'll go too far, either, but I could see them surprising a team (or two, if they played Toronto).

Fully agreed. They're one of the best teams currently at the end of the season. Not as dominant as last season but that Tkachuk kid really might be a weapon for the playoffs. They basically had to play PO hockey to get in and he has already proven to be as advertised. On the other side, Hoobeydoobey's performance in POs will be very similar to his last year's...
