I really don't have a preference between him spending part of his season in the WHL (after a taste in the NHL) or spending the entire season up with the Hawks. Some have said he has nothing to prove in the WHL but I don't think it's a matter of proving anything - I think it's a matter of getting stronger to be better able to win physical one-on-one battles and for him to get better and more confident with his shot - and both of those two things can be worked on in either the WHL or NHL. He looked pretty strong at the World Juniors, WHL playoffs, and Memorial cup, he never got pushed around and when he cut guys off he pinned them and most times took the puck away. No he doesn't lay out big hits but he knows how to use his speed and reach, it's his choices with the puck in his own end that need work, which he's improving on. When I say he needs to get stronger I don't mean he's weak or afraid to engage - he's not. I watched every Seattle game after the WJC with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 games, including all three rounds of the playoffs and the Memorial Cup Final. My main focus when watching all those games was to watch KK. I saw him do a lot of things well defensively - his skating and stick are excellent. His anticipation to break up passes and his passing are also excellent. What's not at the level of excellent, in my opinion based on my observations, is his physical strength and his shooting. I'm less concerned about his physical strength because he will get stronger naturally as he ages. My bigger concern is his shot and lack of willingness to shoot. We decried Keith's pop gun shot all through his career - that's what I'm concerned most about. Hopefully he can work on his shot to get it off faster and with more velocity so that he can be a true PP#1 blue line threat.

His coach said he has a good shot but he has to use it more. I couldn't watch full games till the playoffs, Mem cup, and WJs, but I watched highlights of almost every game and his shot doesn't look bad but he definitely needs more power on it and use it more, because it's accurate. Korchinski really improved on his defensive game last season, plus added muscle. Coming into the summer at 193lbs I'm sure he'll be close to 200 come training camp, which should improve his shot. But even if his shot isn't better everything else he brings to the table should land him a spot with the Hawks. I haven't been this excited for training camp in a long time, the cupboards are full again and there's a good mix of veterans and guys in their 20s, plus some great young kids who'll start their pro careers in Chicago and Rockford.

One thing we know that can be a make or break thing for a player is his confidence in his game, or certain aspects of his game. It's not always easy to discern like the deer in the headlights look of Ian Mitchell with an opposing forechecker bearing down on him - maybe it's a player's reluctance to shoot because he's not confident in his shot ... or ... maybe that player is more deferential by nature and his passing up the opportunity to shoot has nothing to do with confidence. I don't know regarding KK. I think I'd rather have LR and the Hawks coaches mentor and nurture him to improve that aspect of his game - but only if it can build his confidence and not diminish it to be attempting it at the NHL level.

Seeing the pics of Korchinski at the UpperDeck showcase he looks much bigger than his draft year.
Korchinski looked really good last preseason, with the added size and more experience I don't see how he goes back to Seattle.
It's going to be a fun training camp to follow.

Somewhat related, saw where the Kraken might request an exemption for Shane Wright to play in the AHL if he does not make the team rather than go back to juniors team. Hopefully Korchinski shows enough to make the team and this becomes moot, but apparently there is a process where you can make the request. Wright will not be 20 until January 5th.

Sam or Marcel² would be good, I noticed both were talking a lot. But back to Korchinski, he seemed pretty confident out there, and with his added weight I can see him playing the full season in Chicago. Him and Bedard have good chemistry, so let them start their careers together.

Murph said he'll be the slower skater watching his back as he skates it up the ice. It'll be good for Korchinski to play with a big stay at home dman, who's a righty.

It'll be good for Korchinski to play with a big stay at home dman, who's a righty. Always a good thing. I just think we're at the point where we need to give the kids the chance to sieze and opportunity and start running with it, as opposed to say, the last couple of years where we would much rather protect them from a tank. If Korch can be effective at an NHL level now, in spite of his age, he should be given a shot. Ditto with all the other kids. Granted, if they can play at a low NHL level but need more seasoning to play the role they were acquired for, then yeah, give them some time. With the acquisition of Bedard it does start the clock ticking for the rise to contention--the sooner the better before these kids will be paid. My $0.02: If Korch looks good in preseason, then give him his 10 games. If he plays like a top 4 (even a raw top 4), keep him up.

Nobody thinks KK is a finished product - he has a lot of development still to do. The question is where is it best for him to work on that development. Under normal operating procedures when the teams win/loss record is critical for team success, the answer would almost always be to develop players at a lower level so their missteps don't derail the team's success. But the Hawks operational parameters are not the norm - winning games takes a backseat to developing prospects and getting them NHL experience. Would it hurt the big picture to send KK back to Seattle? Most likely not. Would it hurt KK to be thrown in the deep end of the NHL game when he isn't 100% ready? That's the big question. It looks like the Hawks are going to give him enough leash to let him show them the answer.

Playiong Devil's advocate, what defenseman ever has been a 100% ready finished product when they stepped foot on NHL ice? None of our previous D core was. I think the real question is whether or not Korch is at the point where staying up makes the most development sense as opposed to sending him down. He'll get more minutes against lesser opposition if he's sent down, which might be a tipping point in either direction. He shouldn't be rushed, but he also shouldn't be held back for the sake of holding him back simply because the team as-constructed doesn't look good. If he looks good in preseason, give him his 10 games. If he looks like he can work in a top-4 role with some growing pains and a vet partner, no reason to send him down. If he doesn't meet that critera? Send him back.

Will be interesting to see what chemistry Korchinski has with Bedard. Hoping they're going to be a nightmare for other teams for the next 10 - 15 years!
Envisioning Doug Wilson behind the net with a breakaway pass to Denis Savard at center ice

Korchinskis goal at the World Juniors helped Bedard set one of his records. I want these two to start their NHL careers together. Korch can earn his lumps and if he stumbles, put him on the 3rd pair.
